A short but powerful true story of loss, starting with a house fire that killed Lynne Cockrum-Murphy's sisters and father and left her badly burned when she was just 30 months old, and follows the life that grew out of that tragedy. Instead of giving in to a family history of dysfunction she writes about dealing with loss, family alcoholism and chaos, an eating disorder and shows that there is a way to move beyond the events of the past. Interwoven in the story are actions, steps, tools and even a reading and movie list to help you move forward into a life filled with spirituality, meaning and purpose. The story is a model of hope, action and success.

Living Hope: Steps to Leaving Suffering Behind, by Lynne Cockrum-Murphy

Review "This is the book to show everyone that the past can't hold you down, that trauma can be overcome." - MJ Caldwell, R.N."Living Hope is powerfully written and deeply mesmerizing.  A must read for anyone seeking to shift their emotional pain to inner peace and emotional freedom. Lynne Cockrum-Murphy shares her compelling story so others may benefit."  - Connie M. Leach, ED.D., Career and Life Coach, author of Adolescent Girls at Risk and co-author of the Charge up Your Life books

From the Author After the fire, my mom couldn't be there for me; she was grieving and surviving. She drank more and more. I didn't get what I wanted from her (love and attention). The cuddling I wanted wasn't possible because the front of my body was badly burned. When I was in my early twenties, she said she liked that I always hugged her hello and goodbye; she didn't know where I learned it because she has never been like that. So, cuddling and hugs I craved, probably because I went without. Today I recognize a gift in the loneliness I developed in those experiences. My mom unknowingly, in her own pain, gifted me a desire - a deep yearning for more: more love, more comfort, more time and more attention. Always yearning for more drove me to seek: to seek something to help me. Originally, I thought it was in another person. I thought my mom had what I wanted and needed. Later, I'd want others to help me, even to fix me. I thought others had what I wanted. Eventually I realized my need for love and comfort were only marginally met by people so I transferred all that to a deep desire for God. That yearning must be why the song Breathe sung by Kathryn Scott spoke me when I heard it. I related to her hunger and desperation for that essence we call God. I believe on a karmic level it served me to be the burnt baby for all those months, when my pain was so great and the burns so deep, that people couldn't touch the front of me for a long while. I felt very lonely. The loneliness was also created by what felt like long periods sitting in my crib in the hospital, wondering where my family went and why they weren't there with me. I think my Grandmother visited me. I remember blue angels visiting, talking with me at night. I liked them. But mostly I remember sitting in a cold, empty place looking out the windows wondering what had happened.

From the Back Cover "What an important book to read for anyone who has suffered a traumatic life experience including at the hands of another. Lynne shares some deeply personal experiences and offers hope to others that will strengthen, encourage and provide a way to leave the suffering behind. Her book describes a profound journey of discovery and one that readers can relate to and take away a sense of personal growth not only in the author herself as she wrote the book but in themselves as well." - Adriane Hopkins

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Life had never been easy for Maddie Stockwell. Being the daughter of the outlaw Bass Mason, a man who'd changed his name more often than he'd changed his socks, had forced her to look out for herself at an early age. She was quick on her feet, too. Quicker than the man with the hands that had just seized her could possibly know. The fingers digging into her waist sent curse words—things she'd never say aloud but had heard numerous times—running through her mind. They muffled the piano music and shouts of people filling the saloons on both sides of the alleyway. Furthermore, the hand over her mouth stank of fish, and the pressure of that hand pressed grit into her lips and cheeks, igniting her fury.Whoever he was—this man who'd grabbed her as she left the community well—was big. Strong, too, given the way he hoisted her off the ground, dragging her backward.Claws of fear dug into her throat, but it was the anger surging inside she focused on. Not again. Did every man think all they had to do was hover in the night darkness and snatch her up as if they were picking peaches or something? They might be able to do that to other women, but not her. With movements she'd acquired while fighting off those who had ridden with her father, Maddie kicked one heel backward into the man's knee as she shot an elbow straight back, catching his ribs. She also flung her head back, connecting with what she assumed was his nose by the way he screeched. She didn't stop there, though. The frustration inside her hadn't played out. As the arms around her went slack, she spun and brought the now halffull water bucket around at full speed. It met the side of his head with a solid thud, and her well-aimed kick targeted right below the belt buckle sent him the rest of the way to the ground. He was no longer a threat, rolling on the ground as he was, but the names he was shouting, the things he was calling her—as if any of this was her fault—had her temper flaring.Maddie swung the bucket again, cracking him upside the head. The last bits of water flew in all directions while the bucket splintered into pieces. She froze for a moment when the man went quiet. As swiftly as his hands had grabbed her moments ago, something she couldn't describe gripped her from the inside. Her entire being shook as if she stood in the center of a Rocky Mountain snowstorm instead of a warm, dark California night. Mad Dog had found her again. This wasn't him, but it was one of his men.Shouts, muffled by the throbbing in her ears, had her spinning about. Two men, as big as the one on the ground, barreled down the alley.Instinct said run, but where? She couldn't go back to Hester's. That would jeopardize the other girls, so Maddie leaped over the prone body and headed for the street at the end of the alley several buildings ahead. Her heart raced as fast as her feet. The ground rumbled from the weight of those chasing her, and the opening seemed to get farther away instead of closer.A whoop or whistle had her chancing a glance over her shoulder.Like the devil riding out of hell, a horse raced right between the two men, knocking them aside."Hold out your arm, darling," the rider shouted. "Lucky will save you!"The two men were scrambling to their feet. The horse getting closer. Her choices were clear: get run over and caught or leap on the horse behind the devil himself.Instinct, again, had her choosing the latter.Turning, she held out an arm, and as the man's hand clamped her elbow, she jumped, flinging one leg over the back of the saddle. She'd leaped on behind her father more than once, way back when, before he'd left her with Smitty. He'd been the one man she could always count on, Smitty that was, right up until the end. God rest his soul. Unlike most men, he deserved a place behind the pearly gates."Hold on, darling," the man in front of her shouted. The clop of hooves echoed against the bricks as the horse rounded the corner, entering the street. Maddie wrapped both arms around the stranger to keep from sliding off, and caught a glimpse of her pursuers shaking their fists in the air.Laughter from the rider in front of her filled the air, and feeling a touch of elation, Maddie shouted, "Are you?""Am I what?" the man asked in return."Lucky?" She could use some of that. Hers seemed to have run out weeks ago."Hold on, and you'll find out."He took another corner, and then zigged and zagged down streets and up others, turning so many times she was dizzy, and lost, but Maddie kept her knees bent, legs out of his way as the man heeled the horse, keeping it at a full run.Sea air—a mixture of dirty water, salt, dead fish and wet wood—stung her nose when he brought the horse to an abrupt halt. They dismounted at the same time, and he grabbed her by the back of one arm, propelling her in one direction while slapping the horse on the backside, sending it in the opposite way."In here," he directed, hushed and hurried. The tall building blocked the moonlight, making it impossible to see much of anything. He'd saved her from the other men, but that didn't mean he was safe. Few men were. Life had taught her that. "What about your horse?" she asked, trying to buy time to figure out an escape on her own this time."It wasn't mine," he answered. "I stole it."She dug her heels into the dirt. "Stole it?"His strength was no match as he pulled her forward. "Don't give up on me now, darling.""Don't call me darling," she said. "And let go of me.""Can't. Alan Ridge isn't going to be happy when he learns you knocked out his henchman. I may have gotten his other men off our tail for a bit, but eventually they'll learn where we went. At least the general direction." He threw open a door. "You can trust Lucky, darling. You're safe with me."A chill rippled through Maddie. Mad Dog Rodriquez and Alan Ridge were the same man; she'd discovered that in the first town she'd hightailed out of in the dead of the night. Smitty had heard Mad Dog was in Mexico, and that was why he'd sent her to California: to escape the outlaw for good. That plan had backfired and she'd been doing little more than avoiding capture since stepping off the train. Mad Dog had a penchant for stealing girls and selling them at high bounties, but that wasn't the only reason he was pursing her."You know Alan Ridge?" she asked."I know of him."She didn't like it, not one little bit, but Lucky, as he called himself, seemed her only alternative at this moment. Given her choices, Maddie followed him, vowing to escape the first chance she got.He closed the door behind them and let go of her arm but took her hand as he spun around. It was even darker inside, completely black. "Hold on to my belt. I'll never find you in here if we get separated."Maddie was contemplating that when he whispered again. "But Ridge's men will. Have no doubt about that, darling. When that one comes to, he's going to be looking harder than ever.""Are you one of Ridge's men?" she asked point-blank, though not really sure what she'd do if he said yes."Aw, darling," he drawled. "Would I be trying to save you if I was in cahoots with him?"Men were a fickle bunch, and not a one of them was above lying, yet her instincts, which she hoped weren't trying to fool her, said she could trust this man. However, her ire was still riding high. "Will you stop calling me that," she hissed, while wrapping her fingers beneath his belt. Men who'd ridden with her father always called her darling. She'd hated it then, and hated it now. Along with everything else about her past.Lucky started walking forward slowly, as if feeling his way. "I will if you tell me your name.""Maddie. Madeline Elizabeth Stockwell," she answered. It was a good name. This one she'd settled on. No one could trace it back to Bass. That wasn't likely, considering he'd been calling himself Boots Smith when he died, but she wanted to sever all ties to her former life. California was supposed to have been a fresh start, but since arriving, she'd found herself running more than when living with outlaws."Well, ain't that a mouthful?"Stung, she retorted, "It's better than Lucky.""Lucky's just my nickname, darling. Real one's Cole. Cole DuMont.""Who gave you a nickname like that?""I did.""You gave yourself a nickname?" She'd given herself a full name, but that had been a necessity; giving yourself a nickname was just plain silly. Maddie was her real name, as far as she knew. Madeline as well as Elizabeth and Stockwell were ones she'd chosen. They sounded distinguished. Proper. That was what she wanted. A real, proper and distinguished life. She'd have it, too. If she ever got away from Mad Dog and his henchmen."Sure enough did." Lucky paused to open a door."Figured if I called myself that often enough, it would stick. Luck, that is."She followed him outside. The air was cool and it had started to rain. Mist really, since it was more as though the water just hung in the air rather than falling to the ground."Has it worked?" she asked, curious."Sure enough has."The moisture-filled air was darker, and she wondered how he'd found the next door he opened. Luck, maybe? They did that several times, entered buildings, weaved around boxes and crates—at least she assumed that was what was on both sides of them, snagging her dress sleeves at times—and exited only to take a few steps before entering another one. Warehouses along the seashore were like that. Long lines of buildings storing the cargo shipped in and out of the bay. She'd explored them during the day in the town she'd first arrived in, but the men she'd encountered along the seashore made her not want to visit the docks again.Mad Dog's men."Was that Ridge's horse you stole?" she asked."Don't know," he answered. "I'd just stepped out the back door when I saw you knock down Bubba.""Bubba?" This building had a sharp, almost sickeningly sweet scent filling it, like molasses, and she glanced around, but might as well have had a burlap bag over her head. She couldn't make out anything in the darkness."Don't rightly know if that was his name or not," Lucky said, "but he was one of Ridge's men. I saw the other two going after you, so I ran around front and jumped on the first horse I came to."They were still whispering, and it was making her voice burn. At least that had to be why her throat felt so thick. "Why?""Why what?""Why'd you steal the horse?""To rescue you." He stopped suddenly and she bumped into his back before stilling her steps. "You do know what Alan Ridge does with the girls his men snatch off the streets, don't you?""I've heard." She refrained from admitting all she knew about the alias Mad Dog had taken on. It seemed the outlaw was now the leader of his own gang and had henchmen in every town lining the coast.Lucky—she still thought that was a silly name—opened another door and scanned the area like he'd done at each one before."Don't worry," he whispered. "Ridge won't catch us. Not tonight."Stepping into the wet night air once again, Maddie squinted, hoping to see something this time. Nothing but blackness, yet she could hear water sloshing. "You sound funny," she said when he opened another door."That's because I was born and raised down by New Orleans. A bayou boy. That's what my granny always called me.""What are you doing here?""Shh," he said. "Listen."She did, until her ears stung from the thundering of her own blood."Must've been a rat," he said, moving forward.Maddie quivered. Rats came in all shapes and sizes, and she knew firsthand how some walked on two legs, pretending to be human."Don't worry, darling, rats don't like us any more than we like them. It's not much farther, either.""Maddie, the name's Maddie.""Yes, ma'am," he said, as cocky as every other statement he'd made. After the last building, he led her along a series of docks. Thick fog had settled in, and so had her nerves. An escape route hadn't presented itself. Lucky may have rescued her from that alley, but that was not to say he wasn't as bad as Mad Dog. He could be taking her to a place no better than Mad Dog did the girls he captured. Long ago she'd figured out what happened to those girls before they were sold. She hadn't let that happen back in Colorado, and wasn't going to let it happen here, either. Not with Mad Dog or a man who called himself Lucky. He stopped and started unlooping a thick rope from one of the posts lining the dock. "Climb down."She peered over the edge. A rowboat bounced in the water. "Into that?""Yes.""Why?""So I can row you out to my uncle's ship. The Mary Jane. It's sailing for Seattle posthaste."Her heart skipped several beats. "Seattle?""Yep."That could be far enough away, but traveling cost money—something she didn't have. The small chunk of gold sewn in the waistband of her petticoat was her seed gold. Smitty had given it to her when she'd left Colorado, along with all the cash he'd had. He'd said he wouldn't need it where he was going, and Maddie had promised to make him proud. To become a woman he could smile down upon while he was busy filling the world with sunshine even on cloudy days. A smile tugged at her lips, remembering how Smitty had insisted if she ever needed him, all she had to do was look up. He'd brighten the sky for her."Come on," Lucky said, as he turned around and started climbing down the wooden ladder. "Unless you want to stay here, become one of Ridge's girls."Something changed, and Maddie glanced up. Strangely there was a momentary part in the clouds. The moon, as big, round and right as she'd ever seen, peeked through and shone down on her. Her heart skipped several more beats as she glanced back toward the rowboat. Still cautious, she asked, "How much will it cost me?""Nothing."It was the first time she got a good look at Lucky's face. Kind of long, with a square, clean-shaven jaw. It was his eyes that caught her attention. Even in the fog they twinkled as if that was where the stars were, instead of high above the clouds where nobody could see them. She glanced up again. The moon was gone. No stars, either."Come on, Maddie," Lucky coaxed. "I promise you're safe with me. You'll be safe all the way to Seattle."There were no others mingling around, no one to hear if she shouted, unless perhaps Mad Dog or his men—if they had followed. She wanted to believe Lucky, climb down and escape this town and all the dangers it held, yet caution had been her constant companion for years. "How do you know I don't have family here?" she asked. "Someone looking for me. Right now, even. Who'll hunt you down, along with Ridge."

It starts quick with a fast-moving rescue scene then slows to a dull ship ride to Alaska, and was slow to pick up. The need in the beginning for Maddie and Cole to appear married was rather flimsy, but understandable as they made their trek through Alaska to a gold claim. Unless you were a whore or a business owner in town few respectable women lived or mined gold in such remote places. Although thousands of prospectors headed to Alaska back in the day, and it became less remote. But it was rough. Rough land. Rough people. Into 100 pages, not much interesting took place. A few minor incidents. Maddie slipped over the the edge of a steep, narrow mountain pass, and Cole rescued her. I found the inward and outward conflict of the story lacked depth and not very memorable. Not a terrible story, but not riveting enough to keep my attention. Like so many Harlequins--nice people--colorless stories. I do like the cover. I give this story 2 1/2 stars.

Pablum, Colorless, Harlequin Historical Romance By Blue Falcon This review is “A Fortune for the Outlaw’s Daughter” by Lauri Robinson, the fourth book I’m reviewing for the Carolyn Awards. The Story: The book begins with the heroine of the book, Madeline Elizabeth “Maddie” Stockwell, daughter of outlaw Bass Mason, fighting off a kidnapping effort before being rescued by the hero of the book, Cole “Lucky” DuMont. Cole is on his way to Alaska to mine for gold, and Maddie decides she wants to go too, stowing away on Lucky’s uncle’s ship headed to Alaska.Lucky isn’t happy about Maddie going with him to mine for gold at first, but after they arrive in Alaska, their feelings for each other start to turn romantic in nature. Lucky and Maddie eventually consummate their relationship. As they find gold, they start to wonder whether their relationship will continue. Maddie and Lucky both want gold for different reasons: Maddie to be wealthy after a life of being poor and Lucky to help his family, which was rich but now needs financial help.Maddie and Lucky are both later attacked by Mad Dog Rodriquez, aka Alan Ridge, the outlaw who tried to kidnap her earlier. Maddie shoots Mad Dog, who is later captured, and she and Lucky have enough money to help rebuild his family’s shipping business and live their own Happily Ever After.Upside: I learned how gold was mined.Downside: Pretty much everything else. “A Fortune for the Outlaw’s Daughter” lacked a lot of things. The characters lack depth, the storylines is boring, and there is no excitement nor much passion in Maddie and Lucky’s relationship. There is simply no juice to this book.Sex: A few mild scenes, but nothing remotely graphic or hot.Violence: In addition to Maddie’s near kidnapping, Lucky is assaulted by Mad Dog’s men; he is hurt, but not severely.Bottom Line: One of the questions asked by The Carolyn Awards is would a reviewer pay money for the book they just read. In this case, my answer for “A Fortune for the Outlaw’s Daughter” is a resounding NO!!!!!!! This book will be immediately deleted from my computer to free up valuable space on my hard drive.

Maddie is the kind of brave woman that helped settle the wilds of America. Lucky was the kind of hero that helped tame it. Tears of pain and triumph, laughter and suspense round out this story and keeps you turning the pages until the end.

Dell, a former mercenary, and his wife, Dolly, once a battlefield nurse, believe they have finally found peace in a deceptively idyllic town on the Oregon coast. Until early one morning, when a body washes up on the town's pristine beach. But this no accidental drowning--the corpse is covered with neo-Nazi tattoos . . . and the skull has been fractured with a spike.   Eager to close the case before it can hurt tourism, the jumpy D.A. arrests Homer, a harmless schizophrenic whose wristwatch--a gift from God, he says--is engraved with a symbol that exactly matches one of the dead man's tattoos. Mack, the director and sole employee of the local mental-health outreach program, is outraged but helpless. He confides in Dolly, who, with her local connections and her husband's ruthless skills, is anything but. As the search for the real killer pulls them deeper into the world of hate groups, Dell and Mack together discover the treasonous fog of evil that hovers not only above their town but also above America itself.   With this latest installment in his new Aftershock series, Andrew Vachss reminds us once again--in his inimitable, visceral prose-that for some, peace comes at a very high price.

Shockwave: An Aftershock Novel (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard), by Andrew Vachss

From Booklist If you’ve ever sat next to someone, maybe in a bar, maybe at a family gathering, who speaks in a low, gruff voice, hinting at his shadowy past—the kind of person who makes you wonder if you’ve heard wrong, or if you’ve just led a really sheltered life—you’ll know what the first-person narrator of this novel sounds like. Dell is the hero of Vachss’ new Shock series (following Aftershock, 2013). When he says he used to belong to the French Foreign Legion, it sounds faintly ridiculous, coupled with his subsequent career as a mercenary soldier. The love of his life, Dolly, is (what else?) a former nurse in Doctors without Borders. He has PTSD; she has secondary PTSD. They’re living in a tiny town in Oregon, just trying to recover and love each other. But a body, covered with neo-Nazi tattoos, washes up on the beach near their retreat. Police suspect a local schizophrenic, wanting to close a case that could affect tourism, but Dell and Dolly go deeper into the very scary world of hate groups. Absorbing puzzle, building suspense, but cardboard characters and Dell’s arrogant voice get in the way. --Connie Fletcher

Review Praise for Andrew Vachss’s Aftershock, the first volume in a new thriller series“Vachss impresses again with his new dark and compelling thriller.” —Largehearted Boy.com “Vachss explores the horrific intersection of victims and victimizers, evil and avengers. The setting has moved from urban to small-town, but the eternal conflict is as it ever was.” —Booklist “Razor-edged and compulsively readable; the pages fly by.” —Library Journal Acclaim for Andrew Vachss“The baddest noir stylist of them all.” —Kirkus Reviews “Vachss’s stories . . . burn with righteous rage and transfer a degree of that rage to the reader.” —The Washington Post Book World “Vachss’s reverence for storytelling is evident in the blunt beauty of his language.” —Chicago Sun-Times “Vachss’s style is personal, laconic, shaded, and, of course, creepy. If you like hard-boiled narrative, this is a read for you.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review “Vachss seems bottomlessly knowledgeable about the depth and variety of human twistedness.” —The New York Times

By John Schinelli I should preface this review by saying that I am an expert on homelessness. I lived on the streets for 17 years, and got off them 20 years ago. I lived a pretty normal life until 10 years ago until I was asked to come back to the place and program where I originally got off the streets, now as a staff member. I say this so that I can state with authority that Andrew Vachss is the best author about the streets and homeless, period. I have read him since the beginning with Flood, and I do miss Burke and the family. But, the Aftershock series is proving to be a match for it. If you want to read a book that has accurate characters of the different facets of the homeless community also, this is it. Mr. Vachss deals with each of the groups with great characters and still spins an awesome thriller. I openly admit to being a little prejudiced in that I have been a fan for many years, but that doesnt take away from it being a great book. My only warning is that his books are extremely intense. Even with my background I always look for something lighter after reading one of his.

By wayne d. dundee This second entry in Andrew Vachss's new Aftershock series is another mystery/thriller written in the spare, distinct style that has become the author's trademark. But while the writing may be lean and spare, the complexity of the mesmerizing plot is anything but.Once again we are drawn into the fascinating world of Dell, a former mercenary, and his wife Dolly, a former battlefield nurse. They have strived to make this world --- a new one for them, located in quiet coastal Oregon --- a peaceful, idyllic spot far away from the wars and conflicts they have, each in their own way, known in the past. But that goal is disrupted one morning when a body --- skull shaven, torso covered with neo-Nazi tattoos, murdered in a precisely brutal manner --- washes ashore on a nearby beach. Although this poses no direct threat to Dell or Dolly, its proximity is nevertheless disturbing. Amplifying this is Dell's relentless devotion to loving and protecting Dolly; and Dolly's nurturing instincts toward the vulnerable about her. When an aging, homeless man from the area is arrested for the murder because he turns up with a watch traceable to the victim, Dolly becomes involved via Mack, the devoted lone worker for a local mental-health outreach program. He quickly points out a logical list of reasons why the unfortunate in custody, Homer, couldn't possibly have committed the murder --- but the cops and, more to the point, the weasel of a local DA are advertising the case as having been solved and won't be easily convinced otherwise.Unwilling to stand by and see an innocent man railroaded while far more dangerous animals – the true killers - are still somewhere on the loose, Dolly turns to Dell, knowing the special skills only he can call on is what it's going to take to track down and deliver the real killers. Enlisting the gradually escalating aid and involvement of Mack, along with his other skills and contacts, Dell goes on the hunt with grim intensity. For Dolly, there is nothing he won't do, no stopping point until he succeeds. The trail that leads Dell and Mack to who and what they are after, takes them through the layers of the homeless who live just beyond the perimeter of what the average person sees or knows, in and out of the poisonous pits inhabited by hate groups, riding the rails on the lookout for circuit riders or FTRA (Free Train Riders of America), and eventually into the corrupt depths of federal agencies where deadly secrets and even more deadly alliances have been formed and buried for decades. As usual with a Vachss book, there are multiple layers to be enjoyed. One can read SHOCKWAVE as a straight mystery/thriller – for which it is totally satisfying. Then there are also many intriguing historical facts and the spot-on societal commentary. And, infused through it all, there is the razor-sharp writing, a host of memorable characters, and the narrative power that forces you to keep turning pages.Highly recommended.

Hunter Briefly, Shock Wave is about the body of a white supremacist which washes upon the shore of a tourist town on the coast of the pacific northwest. A mentally ill homeless man is quickly detained, and nobody with any clout wants to look any further. The victim is apparently no loss to humanity, and the suspect is part of a population that the larger community would like to see disappear. The protagonist learns that it would be impossible for the suspect to have killed the victim, which means that everything he values is in danger. His mission is to make things safe for his family again. We follow along, learning about different homeless subcultures, train-hopping, small-town politics, and even more about the effects of PTSD-by-proxy. That isn't all we learn, because Vachss packs more information in a few hundred pages than many skilled writers spread across several books.Aftershock introduced readers to Dell and Dolly, an ex mercenary for the French Foreign Legion, and a former nurse for Doctor's Without Borders. The series takes place in the Pacific Northwest. Those familiar with Vachss' work are probably familiar with the Burke novels, set in New York. There are some similarities between the characters, but Burke is a man at home with concrete and crowds, while Dell has lived and thrived in various jungles. Both were motherless throwaways as children, and both are capable of extreme violence. Yet, they are self-aware enough to examine their thinking and appreciate the needs of others.Dell has a small family of choice, which starts with Dolly, who is at once a healer and confidant of local young people, and the object of Dell's complete devotion. She is his link to humanity, and the only "mother" he ever had. The rest of his "family" are the many animals that are part of their home, and Dell's observations of their behavior are one of the additional pleasures of the book.Like Burke, Dell composts toxic waste when necessary. Such waste comes in the form of encroaching deer hunters, and a budding killer in Aftershock, to name a few, and some neo-nazi child pornographers in Shock Wave. However, Dell recycles, or repurposes too. A voyeur who appeared in Aftershock returns and is coerced into taking a vital role in Shock Wave. One purpose for this character is to demonstrate the difference between a person's state of mind and their conduct. When Dell uses the peeper for his mission, he nudges him in the direction of putting his skills as a cameraman, honed by years of peeping in the dark, to a noble purpose.Homeless people, freight train hoppers, gutless politicians, and off-the-books federal agents are all in play. An impressive part of the book is a look at the different types of homeless, and they way they view each other. Not since Haiku, an excellent Vachss standalone have the people under this broad umbrella been written about so well in fiction. At the center of all Vachss books is that child abuse is the root of all evil. Shock Wave sets the sights on the effects of emotional abuse which sometimes results in schizophrenia. A large portion of the homeless population in Shock Wave and in reality are mentally ill. A social worker in Shock Wave does an excellent job of explaining common childhood experiences of those with the disorder, and explains why treatment for it is so difficult.Hopefully readers will walk away with a greater understanding of mentally ill people and a need to act on behalf of children. I suggest reading every Vachss book available, and joining PROTECT. (www.protect.org)

Check it "One of the best ways to control your ball is to hit it low, allowing it to gain after a few bounces. This technique can come in handy when you are dealing with a lot of green. Open the face of your sixty-degree wedge at address, and then set your ball about center in your stance to ensure that you catch it clean. On the return, hinge your wrists, and then try to maintain a bit of that hinge when coming down. Your hands should be slightly closer to the target during impact than your club head. A good trick to control the speed of the ball is to maintain the club head at close proximity to the ground as much as possible. This will enable the grooves to really grasp the ball and cause a backspin. Swinging up too soon will lead to either poor contact or a too high shot." $2.99...A small investment to earn bragging rights!

Minutes after a Boeing 747 rises majestically into a Hong Kong sunset, a flash splits the darkening sky. The pilot―suddenly blinded and doubled over in pain―fumbles in the dark in a frantic effort to gain control as the huge jet shudders through its descent. Kat Bronsky, FBI agent and terrorism specialist, is assigned the hunt for a Challenger-class business jet seen nearby just before the incident. The case poses countless questions: Was the flash a pilot error, a missile attack, or a malfunction? Or was it some new kind of weapon? And why are several government agencies interested in what Kat uncovers?

    Blackout, by John J. Nance

From Publishers Weekly Arguably the king of the modern-day aviation thriller, Nance is in top form in this white-knuckle adventure about terrorism and heroism in the air and on land. From the jungles of Vietnam to the forests around Seattle and on several harrowing plane trips in between, FBI Agent Kat Bronsky and Washington Post reporter Robert MacCabe investigate why American jumbo jets are falling out of the sky. All the crashes have striking similarities: pilots were either killed or left blind by bright flashes that exploded just in front of the cockpit while the planes were in midair. Equally confusing is the appearance, then disappearance, of a corporate jet in the vicinity of all the crashes. And whoever is orchestrating the fatal air campaign has neither taken credit nor made any demands. After weathering many attempts on their lives by a shadowy terrorist group, Bronsky and MacCabe finally figure out what's happening: the terrorists are using a special ray gun stolen from the government to disable airplanes in flight. Their intent is to cause so much panic in the travel industry that it will disable the U.S. airline fleet. But why? The author's seventh aviation thriller (Pandora's Clock; The Lost Hostage) features, as usual, a completely new cast of characters who mix like old friends and enemies amid the non-stop action, never-say-die theatrics and stealth conspiracies. While the silly romance between MacCabe and Bronsky should have been jettisoned on takeoff, Nance continues to craft brilliantly hair-raising in-flight emergency scenes and brings this turbulent ride to a rousing, well-developed finale that comes together smoothly on final approach. From School Library Journal YA-Opening with a Boeing 747 rising from the Hong Kong airport, this gripping novel grabs readers from the first page. Within minutes, a flash of light illuminates the cockpit, blinds the pilot, and causes the jet to plummet, killing everyone onboard. Kat Bronsky, an FBI agent and terrorism specialist, is called in to investigate. Questions soon arise as to the involvement of outside forces. When another commercial jet suffers the same fate, Kat finds that other government agencies are asking questions as well as covering up information. Readers are taken on a spine-tingling adventure as passengers in yet another doomed jet struggle to save themselves and discover that someone does not want any witnesses. Thus, Agent Bronsky and the remaining survivors must go on the run. They cannot trust anyone except themselves as there appear to be governmental leaks, and several attempts are made on their lives. Bronsky tracks the mystery from the Orient, across the Pacific to the American Northwest where readers are treated to vivid descriptions of both the varying landscapes and cultural influences. A fast-paced adventure with many ups and downs ending in a surprise, edge-of-your-seat showdown.Anita Short, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Here, aviation analyst, former commercial pilot, and novelist Nance plunges readers into a terrying nosedive as Sea Air Flight 122, an MD-11, drops precipitously and inexplicably from the sky, killing all aboard. Investigate journalist Robert MacCabe has information implicating an unknown terrorist group that has made him its next target and is willing to bring down a 747 to keep him from unmasking the people behind a secret weapon of devastating force. For help, MacCabe turns to FBI agent Kat Bronsky (heroine of Nance's The Last Hostage), and soon they find themselves in a deadly race to learn the truth, while elements of the government (CIA? FBI?) seem arrayed against them. Nance is at his best in several gripping flight sequences, particularly that of a doomed 747. Though the situations are sometimes implausible and the characters are thin, the melodramatic action, bolstered by an ever-increasing threat, will propel readers at breakneck speed to the final confrontation. A thrill a minute By A Customer In Hong Kong, FBI Agent Kat Bronsky and Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Robert McCabe wonder. . . where do you go when there is no place to hide from the people chasing after you? McCabe believes he has a partial answer to what caused Sea Air Flight 122 to crash in the Gulf of Mexico, killing over two hundred people. He is convinced that a terrorist act caused the disaster, but has no proof. Kat thinks McCabe has the evidence to prove his assertion. She plans to fly back to Washington with him, but at the last moment is called off the plane. They agree to meet, but a bizarre incident happens. The pilot of the plane McCabe is flying dies and the co-pilot goes blind. The plane crashes in Viet Nam with only six survivors. Kat rescues them even as the saboteurs give chase. These unknown assailants seem to always be one step ahead of Kat, as if they are being fed insider information from the top. Still, Kat thinks McCabe knows something critical even if he is unaware of its importance. He is the target and she must keep him safe.John J. Nance is renowned for his pulse pounding thrillers that always take the audience along for one heck of a ride. His latest tale, BLACKOUT, is another triumph for an author with one of the last decade's best résumé. The graphic story line feels so believable that many frequent flyers will take the bus just as many moviegoers avoided beaches after Jaws. The engaging characters gain empathy, as what happens to McCabe and Kat seems important to the reader. Mr. Nance provides his fans with an electrifying tale that shows how talented he is.Harriet Klausner

I finished the book by the time I got to Geneva. Few books have kept me turning pages like this. Tom Clancy's books (the real ones, not the Op-Center and Net-whatever balony) have gripped me like this as well, but they are much longer.I guess it helps that John Nance is a pilot, and that I am an aviation nut. He goes into a lot of detail on how to fly a 747 in the first half of the book, and I don't remember spotting a single technical error, which is very unusual. The plot is quite plausable, and there is enough information withheld (and fed to you bit by bit) to keep you guessing right up to the final chapters as to who are the bad guys and who isn't, unlike certain books which give the reader all the info and you have to read how the characters discover what you already know. So good marks to John Nance for that. The only reason I give 4 instead of 5 stars is that the book COULD have been a lot more. Just imagine if John Nance had given the manuscript to Tom Clancy for a bit of reworking. The book would have come back with a LOT more character development, and more artfully crafted descriptions of scenes and action. The book may have ended up being twice as long, but the story and characters are easily interesting enough to keep your attention for a good, long round-the-world trip.Charles

Mr. Nance has done all this. Could it happen? I don't know. Did it keep me interested all the time? Yes. We have an author who does not use sex to sell, an author who uses violence when needed, but again not to sell the book. This is a book to enjoy both for the plot and the characters. I wondered throughout the entire book as to how it would end. There were a lot of times I thought I had it figured out and then I was not so sure. There are just enough players to keep you guessing and on edge.Buy this book. All his books have been good and this is as good or better.

“True to his practice of exceeding his own standards with each new novel, Atkins gives Robert B. Parker's long-running series one of its best installments to date” (Bookreporter.com) with the Spencer novel, Cheap Shot...Kinjo Heywood is one of the New England Patriots’ marquee players—a hard-nosed linebacker who’s earned his standing as one of the toughest guys in the league. He may be worth millions but his connection to a nightclub shooting two years before is still putting a dangerous spin on his life, and his career. When Heywood’s nine-year-old son, Akira, is kidnapped, and a winding trail through Boston’s underworld begins, Spenser puts together his own all-star team of toughs. It will take both Hawk and Spenser’s protégé, Zebulon Sixkill, to watch Spenser’s back. Because Heywood’s next unpredictable move puts everyone in jeopardy as the clock winds down on Akira’s future.

Robert B. Parker's Cheap Shot (Spenser), by Ace Atkins

From Booklist Kinjo Heywood is a ferocious middle linebacker for the New England Patriots, but he has a penchant for off-the field violence as well. When he thinks he’s being followed, his agent hires Boston private investigator Spenser to find and discourage the followers. If a confrontation between Kinjo and his shadows occurs, Spenser will handle any rough stuff. But Spenser’s simple bodyguard duty turns serious when Kinjo’s 10-year-old son is kidnapped. Perhaps it was masterminded by the boy’s mother, Kinjo’s ex-wife. Nope. She has an alibi and is every bit as invested in the boy’s return as Kinjo. How about the current trophy wife? Nope again; Spenser eliminates her fairly quickly. Perhaps the kidnapping goes back to Kinjo’s possible involvement in a shooting death at a New York dance club. The three thugsters—Spenser, longtime running buddy Hawk, and Spenser’s protégé Z—employ their usual investigative techniques of intimidation and smart-ass repartee in the service of solving the case. Atkins’ third shot at the Spenser caseload shows steady improvement over the first two. Spenser is as tough and funny as ever, and Atkins has become a worthy successor. --Wes Lukowsky

By Bookreporter After assuming the reins of the iconic Spenser canon, Ace Atkins didn't just breathe new life into the already healthy franchise; he has performed the seemingly impossible task of growing it. True to his practice of exceeding his own standards with each new novel, Atkins gives Robert B. Parker's long-running series one of its best installments to date with the newly published CHEAP SHOT.One of the many points of Boston’s pride is its professional sports teams, and CHEAP SHOT focuses on football. Atkins knows of which he speaks, giving the book a definite air of knowledgeable authenticity. Spenser is initially retained by the sports agent of Kinjo Heywood, a star linebacker of the New England Patriots. Kinjo reportedly has been stalked and harassed by some unknown subjects, and Spenser is tasked with finding out the who and the why behind it. He isn’t entirely sure if Kinjo is overreacting to the adoration of some overreaching fans, or if some blowback from a shooting incident in New York in which Kinjo was allegedly involved may be coming back to haunt him. Then there is Kinjo’s ex, who isn’t happy at all about his current wife. For someone as popular and wealthy as he is, Kinjo should be a lot happier. In fact, it appears that his only true joy is Akira, his nine-year-old son. So when Akira is suddenly kidnapped, Kinjo’s entire world slips loose of its moorings.Nobody, from Kinjo’s agent to the NFL to the FBI, wants Spenser within a hundred miles of the case --- nobody, that is, except Kinjo, who respects Spenser’s no-nonsense approach to getting things done and his willingness to tell things as they are. Spenser begins following a complicated trail, one that diverges into false dead-ends and parts of Boston where the tourist buses don’t run, all the while racing against time and fully aware that the ending may be a heartbreaking one. Kinjo ups the ante with an impulsive move that all but jeopardizes his son’s safety.Still, as one might hope and expect, Spenser remains dogged in pursuing the all-but-invisible trail to Akira. He is aided in his hunt by the chillingly competent Hawk and his recently introduced protege, Zebulon “Z” Sixkill. Z, by the way, comes into his own during CHEAP SHOT, on matters of both investigation and heavy lifting. I had my doubts about the addition of Z to the Spenser mix, but Atkins somehow pulls off the trick of bringing Spenser, Hawk and Z into scene after scene without things getting too crowded or pushing Spenser out of his own book. That’s fine work, indeed.I wasn’t quite sure how CHEAP SHOT was going to end. That might seem academic, particularly for a mystery novel, but it’s hard to pull off. Atkins does. Like Parker before him, he isn’t afraid to give the reader a tragic ending, and you have to get almost to the end of the book before you learn if Spenser’s pursuit ends in triumph or tragedy. Or, perhaps, a bit of both.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub.

Taking Care of Business By The Ginger Man The strength of the third Spenser effort by Atkins is that the author continues to demonstrate a strong feel for Parker's characters, Boston locales and story pacing. Cheap Shot features both Hawk and Zebulon Sixkill as part of the Spenser team as well as visits to Chestnut Hill, Charlestown and the Patriots facility at Foxboro. The action in this book is fairly straightforward as the Berkley Street Irregulars try to solve the kidnapping of a player's child before any harm can come to him. This impending peril creates more tension than in many of the other books in the series while also providing cover for the sometimes aggressive attention given by Spencer and company to suspects. The only problem with Atkins' writing is embedded in this very strength. As he understandably tries to demonstrate to fans of the series that he can produce books similar to those of Robert Parker, the new author does not take chances with a formula that is starting to get a bit stale after almost 30 volumes. Even Parker varied his approach on occasion as in Spencer's pursuit of Susan Silverman in Catskill Eagle, alternating chapters from the serial killer's point of view in Crimson Joy and through the battles with the Grey Man. Now that Atkins has proved his command of this material, he can enrich the series with further character development. Even Ian Fleming began to show the effect of physical aging on his own legendary hero 10 books into the Bond series.Overall, however, Atkins provides a great service to readers by bringing us new Spenser editions that could pass for books written by the series originator. He even extends in Cheap Shot the metaphor of private detective as Urban Knight, in this case comparing Spenser's crew to Ronin. In expressing his preference for his hired team to the State Police or FBI, the client explains, "Y'all are samurai with no master, doing what's got to be done. Roaming the earth, taking care of business, without any rules." Spencer's only demurral is to add, "Mostly greater Boston. And I have rules."

This book is the third in the Healthy Haiku Productions (HHP) Series of books (http://www.healthyhaikuproductions.com) and the first to be introduced as an ebook for easy downloading and access. It is designed to do several things. First, it serves as a health awareness discussion platform for teachers and mentors. The term “mentor” is used to encompass all adults who work with youth and are responsible for youth development including all educators and parents who work with youth. It may be particularly helpful to those needing alternative strategies to educate and motivate the under-served and at-risk youth. Second, this book serves as a guide for: 1) helping children, teens and their mentors explore important nutritional health issues; 2) introducing children and teens to the world of the English Language Arts and Haiku poetry, 3) assisting teens in using their creative talents to describe feelings and experiences related to diet and nutritional health issues -- using a self-reflective process; and 4) creating a Power Source Prompt (PSP) for youth to draw upon when faced with real-life challenges regarding their diets and habits related to nutritional health. Mentors play an important role in communicating concepts, ideas, and values to youth. Because an effective mentor can have a life-changing impact on a young person, he or she can positively change the course of a young person’s life. Overall, this workbook provides handy tools and references for mentors to create dialogue with youth about diet and nutritional health issues and about "Stepping into their Power" in terms of their health to become all that they can be in this lifetime.
