Hominid Up, Neil Shepard's sixth book of poetry, turns a nightmared, insomniac eye on both urban and rural landscapes: from the brassy multitudes of Manhattan, to the cruise-ship crowds along the East Coast, to the lone man standing in a northern stream amidst its shush and thrum. At the heart of this book is a darkly political vision of post-millennial America, exploring the tensions and flashpoints of class and race that lead us toward our days of reckoning. Neil Shepard directed the BFA Writing Program at Johnson State College. He currently teaches in the low-residency MFA Writing Program at Wilkes University (PA), and he is the founder and long-time editor of Green Mountains Review.

Review The poem has all the freedom of an improvisation, but, on closer inspection, there are signs of a careful craftsman at work. . . An accomplished and deeply satisfying collection. --The Manhattan Review

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. you’ll love Hominid Up By Randall R. Freisinger Neil Shepard’s latest book of poems, Hominid Up, is a singular masterpiece. Dazzling in its variety and poetic range, Shepard’s collection resembles a superb jazz combo in which he plays all the instruments. Shepard demonstrates a virtuoso’s mastery of multiple forms as he explores both public and private themes, moving deftly from jazz historian to intrepid birder to astute social critic. If you are drawn to poets who can both structure and improvise, who can both communicate and entrance, you’ll love Hominid Up.

Whether set in the natural or human world, whether crossing the street in his own neighbourhood or patiently waiting for bird sightings on the coast, one gets the strong sense when reading these poems that wherever it is that Shepard shows up, he does so with sharper senses and heightened awareness. Shepard comes to each poem without presumptions or answers, but with keen observations. Of what? Of what it is like to be here, to breathe, to live. His voice seems to point to the overlooked, to the often startlingness of the ordinary, to the quiet subtleties and poignancies of human interaction. Without his asking, his poems’ wonderful perceptions remind us to look more, attend more, feel more. These poems navigate in the inner life, in the love and life of words( and their origins), and in the human world (with all its shortcomings). They illustrate what it feels like to be one of us travelling through, with perhaps no compass other than an alertness, a presence that is compelled to savour the experience. Wonderful poems! I recommend Shepard’s excellent new collection to the highest degree.
