His artwork adds another dimension. I wish for his painted works in color, but the stark black and white of charcoal and ink fit these psalms well.

Those looking for poems with the gentle sweetness of Mary Oliver or the engaging irony of Billy Collins, poems that are readily accessible, should look elsewhere. However, for those seeking more substantial fare, Josh Goldberg’s A Beggar at the Door will provide a variety of deep satisfactions.The language and imagery of this collection echo both Goldberg’s education in Eastern traditions and the reality of his Jewish heritage — “As a Jewish expression I sit beside them weeping and singing psalms along the dark road of Cosmic Exile” (xi).The tension between East and West is clear throughout: “I now stand before You/hollow, shaken out/mercy be upon me” (9) contrasted with “a laughing blind man nowhere to go” (21). Or “my Lord God/return my eyes/to hollow sockets” (7) followed by “The world is a dream/ foam thrown up” (12).Josh Goldberg’s poetry is best read in solitude and with attention, for it raises important questions whose answers are left up to the reader. For me a key question concerns the concept of “cosmic exile,” about which Shalom Ratzabi of Tel Aviv University says, “The exile of the Jews, their being in foreign lands, emphasizes and essentially signifies the cosmic exile both of the world and of man. ‘Exile,’ in other words, attests to a fundamental and still uncorrected flaw in the ordering of the universe” (Judaism, Exile, and the State of Israel in Postwar Discourse, p. 67).And I am left to ponder: Is the truth that all of us, not just Jews, are exiles, or is each of us an “infinitesimal, unsplittable/a tittle of divine completeness” (19).Others will find different questions upon which to ponder in time well spent.

It's pretty clear that no one, particularly not an editor, looked at this book before the author paid to have it printed by a vanity press. (No publisher bought this book. THAT should have told me not to buy either) This slop would be a rip off at $1.99. Your time & money would be much better spent elsewhere.

It is filled with typographical errors, and there were portions of the book where words reappeared multiple times by mistake. Moreover, the poems themselves were quite dull and uninspired. Given the lack of effort on Ms. Gilley's part to edit and proofread the book, this book is certainly not worth the $12.75 that it is selling for.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. An Important 'What If' Story By Ronald Moeller Larry Bond has returned to the types of stories that first brought him to my attention. His early novels expertly detailed scenarios like a war in Southern Africa (Vortex) or his masterful story of a new French empire in Europe (Cauldron) and who can forget his first novel dealing with a second Korean war (Red Phoenix). Lash-Up returns to these roots as it explores a Chinese plot to solidify its hegemony over the South China Sea region but negating America's technological advantage. His story is both imaginative and terrifying, highlighting our vulnerabilities and over-reliance and faith in out technological prowess. The scenes he crafts showing the disbelief and utter lack of comprehension of what the Chinese were doing is a realistic portrayal of a military leadership more interested in careerism than in combating the threat. If you''re setting foot in a US military operations center, whether it's a major headquarters or a tactical site in the mountains of Afghanistan, for the first time, you'd be amazed at the flat screens, computer terminals, and data streams. This single vulnerable aspect of our current military culture is creatively explored in this story. The other aspect, the person far down the chain of command who clearly sees the problem, comes up with a workable solution, but is blocked by his seniors since it doesn't fit into their per-conceived paradigm , is also indicative of today's large defense bureaucracy. The book would've received five stars without hesitation except for two glaring editing mistakes - the use of C-141 aircraft (an aircraft that has been out of our inventory since the early 90's) and a timeline mix-up (the story is set in 2017 and there is a passage referring to the 2016 election coming up in three years). nevertheless, I would recommend this book; especially to the US military and defense bureaucrats.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Bond is back - with some qualifiers. Sorta spoilers below. By Al Swanson I love Larry Bond. Some of his earlier stuff is just my favorite military fiction, period. In the past, lots of military hardware details, good action, decent characters. Characters are not Bond's strong suite, but they are solid. This one was lighter on the military hardware part. Some of that is to be expected given the subject, but it seemed he could have beefed that up. I've not read any of his serial books - I simply HATE serials. I've read some, but only when they were of specified length from the beginning. The Hobbit/Rings series, for example. But I don't want to go too far off topic.Bond reduced the hardware specific parts (maybe other readers found that tedious or boring, I didn't), increased the human factor and ended it up the same - the good guys win. This time, the bad guys weren't really given much of a go once the good guys were on the board, though. This is true - that the good guys always trounce the bad guys - in all his books. So no new stuff there. That's fine - who wants the Chinese to win in a worldwide fight anyway? (except perhaps the Chinese) I'm cool with that, but it would have been a bit more realistic to have some modifiers (I'm not going to be specific here since I'm trying to avoid spoilers) that would provide some give and take and add some drama to the battles.Still, I'll read anything he puts out - serials excepted - that keeps to his roots. This did, more or less, and I enjoyed it. Really, isn't that what fiction is all about anyway? Enjoyment? Good, fast read.

For a book about war in space, there is just not very much war in space By Liam H Dooley I had really wanted to *love* this book, because the concept is great. An Chinese ASAT that blows up primarily GPS satellites shot from a mountain gun, and the US racing to deal with the new threat with a novel, high-speed no holds program to counter it. The US tries to convert a mothballed spaceship that had never flown - the VentureStar - into a flying space fighter / bomber. I had never heard of the VentureStar, so I learned a bit about it here. So the premise is not bad, but the story? Well.... it needed revision.First, I wondered why ballistic missile with conventional warheads wouldn't be used. Since bombs dropped from space were used, I don't see why conventional ICBMs are any worse. in principle conventional ICBMs could be deployed a lot quicker. Why not just have tried them and have them intercepted?But the real problem with this book is its overall plotting and focus. The "space battle" is the last two chapters, with most of the book not even being about the development of the spaceship, but about the interagency disputes. Talk about dull. There were a few battlescenes at sea and in the air - but these were absolutely irrelevant to the storyline and the spaceship. Just tossed in their for some random action.If I were to rewrite this, I would have skipped 90% of the interagency arguments, sped up the development, skipped the random sea and land battles, and focused on the space battle. It's a great idea. Why not have a few missions? They get progressively harder, they have problems with equipment, maybe some of the crew die? Maybe have a space shuttle or two sent up first?For a book about war in space, there is just not very much war in space.Liam Dooleywww.liamhdooley.com

Nowadays, we get off on anything that is fast and all its synonyms – fast food, quick service, fast delivery, etc. Take more than a week for your ordered product to be shipped and you blow a gasket. Mornings are blurred memories full of instant noodles and easy to prepare cereals. We hurry through life by pressing down on the accelerator of our cars so we can race with others to get to our destinations. But in every squeeze of insecticide cans to kill off cockroaches or in every flick of the switch to turn the lights on, we – unwittingly for some, indifferently for others – are affecting our planet in a way that is, more often than not, destructive. We are changing our planet and we are changing it fast. How fast, you may ask? Fast enough that efforts to curb the significantly detrimental effects of human activities would not be sufficient in the long run. Blame being busy or simple self-centeredness but we hardly notice what is going on in our environment. Blame our sense of entitlement and superiority or some other human quality but simply put, we do not care about it. We think that nature is for our taking, that we can do with it whatever we want. We throw garbage everywhere even if there is obviously a huge sign right in front us discouraging the act. I am pretty sure you have went through this phase. Perhaps, you are stuck at this phase but I remember when I was a child and I did not really give a damn about throwing my candy wrappers and junk food containers on the street once they are empty of food. It took a scolding from my parents and school lessons to make me stop doing it. But for some people, no amount of knowledge and reprimands could change one’s attitude towards environmental preservation. And here stems most of the issues we are facing as of today in regards to our world. Before you dive into this book, here is a food for thought: there is no disconnection between what we do and what our planet feels because of it. So, here is a little exercise for you. Think of an activity – any human activity – that you feel do not have any negative effect on the environment. Cooking? Showering? Reading? You choose. And keep your answer in mind and as you go through this book, find out if your answer is correct. If you are wrong, learn just in what way human activities could impact the world. Speaking of, one of the most notable bearing human activities have on our planet is climate change. This is pretty much a familiar term. I would even bet a thousand bucks that you are living under a rock if you have not heard a thing or two about climate change. In this book, not only will climate change will be tackled but also other human activities that have drastically affected our planet and prodded it to change for the worse. I am going to talk about the earth bombs that we have individually wielded and detonated to destroy our Mother Earth
