Professor Electra Campos is smart, sexy, with a weakness for the ladies. And her most dreadful dean has dropped dead (with a little help). Electra is an obvious suspect, and she gets involved with proving her innocence (with a little "Prove it on me Blues.") This novel is packed (pun intended) with action (pun intended). It's an academic murder mystery whose appeal will extend far beyond academics. Electra and her side-kick Adrián have me laughing and shaking my head (and wanting to shake them!). From "Greek tragedy was in my blood" to "I pulled her thong from my coat pocket," pleasures abound in this sexy third novel from Emma Pérez.

Electra Campos is an English professor at Capital College in New York City. Getting to campus very early, to turn in paperwork to the dean, she discovers his body in a pool of his blood. What follows is a very funny mystery with some great, off beat characters. There is also plenty of sex, and a fun flirtation between Electra and NYPD Detective Carolina Quinn. Edited by award winning Kathering V. Forrest, Electra's Complex is a very good debut novel.

Excellent erotic murder mystery that will keep you on your toes By Tara from The Lesbian Review I had no idea what I was getting into with this book, but it was a wild ride. I've shelved it as erotic, and it is, but there is absolutely no romance to this book. It's a murder mystery where one of the potential suspects is also investigating the murder to the best of her ability. There's a lot of sex with multiple partners, but all of it ratchets up the tension.I'm typically not a mystery person at all, but I'm so glad I read this. If you want something different, be sure to check it out.I received a free copy from the authors for an honest review at The Lesbian Review.

There's a Man with a Gun Over There is an autobiographical novel based on R.M. Ryan's military experiences. An antiwar activist while in graduate school, he received a draft notice after the Tet offensive in 1968. Not interested in killing or being killed in Vietnam, he considered moving to Canada to avoid conscription. Before fleeing north, however, he met with an army recruiter, who promised him a place in a German Language Class at the Defense Language School in Monterey, California.Unfortunately, the army's pledge to Ryan terminated when he graduated as a translator and he was sent to Military Police School. This would keep him physically out of harm's way but cause severe and unexpected emotional consequences. He ended up collaborating with former Nazis while policing American soldiers for mostly minor law-breaking, which violently escalated when he attempted to arrest a black American sergeant for black-marketing cigarettes.About his book Ryan offers this: "All of us men with guns were pretty scary. My MP boss in Germany led a platoon of Military Policemen guarding the Pentagon. His men were the ones with the guns the hippie girls put flowers in. What may be even scarier is the realization that most of the people who come through the American military are trained killers. These people are your neighbors. They're your relatives. I always enjoy telling war supporters this - especially those with sons in the military. The story keeps us on edge and reading throughout and is interesting, funny, and painfully resonant. A quick read. An important read. Grab it!

By Anonymous This story reveals the twisted compromises demanded of young men who came of age in the shadow of the Vietnam war. Ryan thinks he's doing the right thing, making the most of the contradictory demands of family, country, justice, and self-preservation. But nothing is as simple as it looks. While doing his best to get along, Ryan discovers that history keeps intersecting with itself and trapping him in his own devices. The novel is a quick and compelling read.

By Robert Alan There’s a Man with a Gun Over There is a novel written in the tradition of Catch-22 and M*A*S*H, a satire about a civilian who spends three years in the American Army during the Vietnam Era, but never sees combat and never quite becomes a soldier. Ryan captures the tedium of military life and the endless red tape. Ryan is merciless in divulging his own failures of nerve. He is not a coward. He just wants to be a kind of hero you don’t find in the military. This is a novel for all of those Vietnam-Era veterans who did not carry a rifle in Vietnam.

The author's style of writing is so endearing. Her stories have made me both laugh and cry. As you read, it is easy to get lost in her words as she pulls you into her family circle. You will also recognize your own family pictures through the pages. An added bonus to this book are handed down recipes from the author's family. You will truly enjoy living this southern heritage as you read. Enjoy!
