29 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Similarities By Kindle Customer Although the writing was vintage Iris Johansen the plot was too similar to the previous book. This book did not have the tension and edge that kept you in suspense throughout. If memory serves this family was written about many years ago. I was disappointed at the time that there was never a continuation of the story in subsequent books. l was not comfortable with even the hint of sexual attraction between Teresa and Mandak. She was only sixteen and enormously vulnerable and traumatized. I could have waited for the attraction too develop without the explicit thoughts for me it was quite uncomfortable. therefore I was never invested in the characters as a,couple. Theresa (Allie) was not developed enough for to relate to her adult like maturity. ln" Live To See Tomorrow" Ling's son Nicolas would been more acceptable and believable in such a situation because we saw his forced maturation under horrific circumstances. It would have been believable that an much older woman could or would gave sexual thoughts although still inappropriate. I gave this book a three because I am a big fan of I J. perhaps the older book should have been reissued first at a reduced price so reader's have better knowledge of context and feel as if they were reading a rehashed version of aforementioned book earlier mentioned. I wish I could remember the title in order to refresh my memory perhaps then I could better appreciate this one. Disappointed in this one and the last Kendra Michael's installment.

There were some errors such as getting characters mixed up (using one female name, Megan, when we all knew she meant the other one, Allie). Poor editing in that case. It was a very predictable tale, and thus did not build interest. The main character started out at age 16 and became age 23, with the years between mostly glossed over. During those two ages she was angry, defensive, not trusting, and it just became a broken record of pissed off, stubborn, and irrational. It was impossible to like her character or have sympathy for her. I agree with another reviewer that her attraction to a man 10-15 years older than her at that age was just creepy, not stimulating. And the gift that this girl has, to read memories, is an interesting premise, but all we get from the author is that the memories were "...fill in an ugly adjective..." Johansen didn't write about this in any depth, and therefore it lost its ability to add some punch to the story. Blah unless you like Fluffy breast-beating anguish. Oh, there are X-rated parts, but all I could think of was she was doing it with someone old enough to be her father, so I skipped it entirely. No thanks! Oh, one last thing, I hope the day does not come in the judicial courts when we will use as a "witness" someone who reads memories. That is NOT witnessing. And at no time in the book is she asked to testify, so the title doesn't really fit the story.

New Storyline Needed By HaviLover I preordered this book and wanted to love it, but instead found myself skipping the long drawn out tedious explanations about nothing noteworthy. And, seriously are we all really okay with all the sexual attraction between Teresa, 16, and Mandak? I couldn't finish the book because I didn't care what happened to the characters.

Katie Manning makes you feel like you are talking to your best friend. She gives such great advice in a down to earth, realistic way. Just a terrific book written by a terrific lady.

This is a recovery story, which in a strange way is often not received well by the chronic illness community itself.The book Katie has written is not necessarily a how to, it's not filled with a list of treatments or medical jargon, but rather it's a look inside the mental and emotional journey that we take with debilitating illnesses like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.It was a quick read, in a pleasant conversational style that made it very relatable. If you're chronically ill and need some hope, this is the book for you.

Steve gives you honest product reviews on various sous vide machines, so that you're educated before you buy - giving you the options and price-point that works for YOU. Sure, there are "prettier" cookbooks out there, but frankly I've got a lot of dazzling cookbooks sitting on my shelf that are impractical - either by the ridiculously bizarre ingredients or by the "must-have" equipment that I simply don't own. While full colour photos would make this book exceptional (which by the way is the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5), it's the content that counts! Steve's recipes have been carefully thought out, tried, tested and "family-approved". I like that he includes little tips and tricks that one might find helpful. There are recipes in here of things that I would never believe could be made in a sous vide! I'm anxious to really get going with it now!! I'm already looking forward to Steve's next cookbook. I see he has an entire chapter in the Bradley Smoker Cookbook as well. Beautiful colour photos in his section there! Lots of good things yet to come from Steve in "The Black Peppercorn" kitchen.

By DanceMom13111 Wow, this cookbook covers everything, stuff I never would have imagined could be cooked in a sous vide and that you can try even if you don't own one!! I love the detailed, step-by-step instructions for each of the UNIQUE recipes in this book. It's no wonder, though very unfortunate, that Steve's recipes are constantly being copied without him getting the proper credit for the original thought and effort that he clearly puts into each one. The only reason that I'm not giving this cookbook a 5-star rating is because I have only tried a handful of recipes so far, but each one has been delicious and I find the 'tip and tricks' that he adds to some of the recipes also very helpful. It is not the 'prettiest' cookbook that I own but I've paid twice the amount for cookbooks that are collecting dust on a shelf because there is no content. This cookbook is one that I will always be keeping close at hand and that I will be happy to earmark the page when I enthusiastically find another of his "I have to make this again!" recipes! This latest cookbook, as well as just about everything on The Black Peppercorn, continue to inspire me and give me a joy of cooking that I never would have thought possible. Thanks Steve, your passion and talent are evident in the quality of the recipes you create, well done, I look forward to the next one!

How to Read the "Wheel of Time" series By Perschon In 1990, I picked up a book by a writer named Robert Jordan, who was mainly known among fans of fantasy for the Conan novels he penned, which were among my favorites at the time. I bought it without a moment's hesitation and loved it. The Eye of the World followed the classic formula high fantasy had been treading since Tolkien wrote of hobbits leaving the Shire with Nazgul in pursuit.Getting to the end of the book and realizing it was the first in the series was icing on the cake of a thrilling, fast paced fantasy read. I couldn't wait for what I assumed would be the conclusion, the third book in the series. After all, nearly all high fantasy before the 90's were trilogies.Alas, Book 3 did not wrap up the story, and in a pre-Internet world, I had no way of knowing that Jordan intended for 12 books. By the time book 6 came out, I was tired of waiting for closure.So I got stuck at book seven for several years. Last year, I began listening to Book 7, sure that I'd be using it to augment my actual reading of the book. I'm not sure I've picked up a Jordan novel since. But I am about to begin Book 11. And I'm looking forward to the posthumous collaboration of Jordan with Brandon Sanderson. So, to all those who have given up on Jordan, and wished they hadn't, or to those who are thinking about starting but have heard too many negative reviews, here's how I recommend reading Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series.1. Understand that Jordan loves detail. He describes clothing in so much detail, that if "Wheel of Time" ever gets optioned for film or television, the costume designers will be able to go for a lot of coffee breaks. He is fond of giving elaborately detailed descriptions of every character, even minor ones.2. The repetition of previously established plot elements in subsequent books is for people traveling on planes who pick up book 5 in the airport. It allows them to enter the world enough to get through the read. It's a device publishing companies use with bestselling series like this to ensure that the series remain a bestseller. While I have never started any series mid-way through, some people apparently do, and these passages are for them.3. Jordan likes to weave intricate plots with a cast of characters so large it necessitates a glossary at the end of each book. Many of the books are entirely character based, and so seem to have "no action" taking place. This is because many readers want someone to storm a tower, engage in a climactic battle, or throw a ring into a fiery pit. Jordan is too busy marrying characters or introducing a new plot thread to bother with such things. And while he may not talk about a character for one book, he almost always returns to them.4. I started thinking about "Wheel of Time" as a television series. It's long enough to sustain several seasons, and the cast is basically the OC meets LOTR. We watch TV one episode at a time. I began to view the chapters in each book as "episodes" of "Wheel of Time" as a television series, and each book as a "season." I don't like every episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and there are some seasons I like better than others. Some of my favorite episodes are in my least favorite seasons. But I love the characters, and I want to see what happens to them. I love the characters in Wheel of Time. I want to see what happens to them. So I keep "tuning in."5. I got over the reasons I quit. Simply put, they were my reasons. I had expectations of Jordan he never intended to fulfill. I expected him to wrap it up in a trilogy. He didn't. I expected him to snap Rand out of his sullen funk. He didn't. I expected him to stop telling me about the embroidery on coats or dresses. He didn't. I expected him to bring a certain major character back from the dead. He didn't. And finally, I expected him to finish before he passed away. And he didn't.It was that last one that really galvanized me. When I heard he had terminal cancer (many years after it was a reality), it got me thinking about the legacy the man would leave on this earth. An epic bestselling fantasy series. And I realized that, to quote Elvis and Sinatra, he'd done it his way. I might not like some of the choices Jordan made, but I love the world he created and the people walking through it. And I want to know how they fare in the end.So that's my journey to Book 11 of "Wheel of Time" and I share it because I want new readers to know what to expect, but also to let go of those expectations, and know that the journey is worth taking. Especially if you want to be there when the final novel is released next year.Me? I'll be starting book 1 again this fall and listening to all the previous "Seasons" of "Wheel of Time," one per month, in anticipation of the final installment. The Wheel of Time turns...and I'll be "turning pages" with it.

A Tremendous Start, But Beware By newyork2dallas The Wheel of Time is probably the best-known and most widely read fantasy series other than The Lord of the Rings.When this book was published in 1988 or 1989, it created a sensation -- a tremendous first volume that had the usual good-evil battle and tons of action but also was filled with magic, history, politics, sociology, cultural background and realistic characters. When I re-read the first five books, I was amazed at the details of history and politics that Jordan provided in his world. Jordan also has numerous protagonists, not just one or two primary ones like many other fantasy writers.Moreover, Eye of the World features strong men and, through their magical abilities and powerful personalities, stronger women. Jordan has been rightly lauded for the prominent and powerful roles he created for the female characters.The Great Hunt, The Dragon Reborn, The Shadow Rising and The Fires of Heaven followed and created a tremendous series such that The New York Times noted that Jordan had come to dominate the genre that Tolkien made famous.In Eye of the World, the writing is smooth, the various characters and their motivations work well, and there's action aplenty. The sense of innocence and mystery that correspond to the heroes' relative lack of knowledge of their surroundings and the world at large is palpable and realistic.Unfortunately, starting with Lord of Chaos (book 6), Jordan's creation became unwieldy. Instead of concentrating on following the themes and story-threads of books 1-5 (which combined are more than 3500 pages, hardcover), he created new storylines, bogged down the narrative and halted the pace of the epic. Book 8 in particular is an unmitigated disaster -- 650 pages (hardcover) of wheel-spinning (pardon the pun) with almost no progress to the story. Book 9 began to jump-start the narrative once again.The series is at 10 books (the tenth will be published in about two months from now) and growing (13 total possible -- it's a common numerical theme in the books), thus the last volume will be published in 2006, at the earliest.The Eye of the World is great, as are the next four in the series. They are, however, addictive, so know what you're getting into.

I have read a great deal of science fiction/fantasy, and after a while, it all starts to feel the same. You know what I mean: how many times can we revisit Tolkein-esque charcaters like elves, dwarves, and orcs? I was very pleased to discover an entirely new world.Robert Jordan has created a landscape of magnificent proportions. Accents, legends, superstitions, politics...His amazing attention to detail allowed me to become fully immersed in the story. Even more surprising is that the quality of his writing is maintained throughout the book's length of 782 pages. I couldn't put this novel down, with the result that I finished it well inside of a week.This is the first book of a series, and the reviews for some of the later books aren't as glowing. However, I feel that this book is a great read, and can stand on its own. It is not uncommon for series to degrade over time -- take a look at "Wishsong of Shannara"by Terry Brooks, "The One Tree" by Stephen R. Donaldson, or "The Sorceress of Darshiva" by David Eddings. All three of these books fail to live up to the quality of others in their respective series, but that doesn't mean you should avoid the series altogether."Eye of the World" provides us with an epic that is also refreshingly new. Robert Jordan presents us with a world that is the most richly colorful since Tolkein. If you're a fan of fantasy, then don't miss reading this book.

53 of 54 people found the following review helpful. A classic that just got better By Deb Nam-Krane Is saying I Love It a cheat because I loved the first one? I say no, since this isn't just a redux of the original but a definite improvement (and not just because the cover is much snazzier). Moskowitz not only added some goodies from her other books (Pumpkin Cheesecake with Praline Topping deserves to be published twice), she also added some delicious looking photographs (ah, that's what the Pomegrante Tofu is supposed to look like, and mmm, the Mashed Potatoes with Chickpea Gravy looks even better than I'd thought).What's more important is what she took away, namely the laundry list of ingredients which were featured in her first book. Don't worry, there's still plenty of ingredients in Black-Eyed Pea Curry, but the others are somewhat shortened. More importantly, you feel like you have a little more permission to scale down in this release if you don't happen to have everything she lists.Highly recommended that everyone who had the original replaces their copy immediately.

I love this updated anniversary edition...so hopefully it won't run off to friends like my other copies. I definitely feel this edition is improved, and like another reviewer, suggest ditching your old copy for this one....most definitely worth it!!!I made "The Best Pumpkin Muffins" (p.45) last night....a huge hit with my family! My husband said they were the moistest, yummiest pumpkin muffins he's ever eaten (non-vegan, so that's saying something folks). They were super easy & fast to make, and the ingredients/cook times were accurate. One warning from experience, don't make too many, they're so deliciously moist they will spoil fast....I keep mine in a tray covered loosely with a paper towel or linen cloth (to absorb excess moisture), then loosely wrapped in foil (to let them breathe). In a sealed container, the moisture evaporates producing condensation...and faster spoiling.Yummy....if you cheap out, you lose out!!

I have many of her other cook books and this is even better. I feel like I am cooking with a friend who is fun to be with and cares about me. I tried the Breakfast Lentil Chorizo and have finally found a great replacement for SoyRizo. I had fazed that out months ago as I am eating less soy and working toward making my own more healthful and cheaper vegan staples. It is SO tasty in a burrito with beans and spinach. I will be trying the Asparagus & Sun-Dried Tomato Frittata with the Fresh Corn Fritters for Sunday Brunch. I am sure it will be as good as the Shiitake Dill Frittata from her brunch cook book, that I have served to RAVE reviews from friends who are not vegan. Isa Moskowitz is a sure bet for a great cook book.

By Shannon Luster Your Invincible Power: How to Tame Your Ego and Fuel Your Ambition, written by Pamela Hamilton and WT Hamilton, centers around your ego and how your ego affects negatively your success and productive ways to combat that. Overall, this book acts as an inspirational coach for its’ readers, including this reader. But at the risk of revealing too much about the content of this book, I will say no more about that.Personally, I liked the discussion that starts towards the beginning of the book about an “egotic mind,” a term that the authors coin to explain the ego, and how the ego, in turn, affects us all. But the authors also provide a helpful solution.Overall, the practical information in Your Invincible Power: How to Tame Your Ego and Fuel Your Ambition is a book that may help many readers’ lives - if the recommended steps outlined in the book are actually applied and also stick. Old habits die hard, however.In addition, the book could have been longer in this reader’s opinion. At a little over 100 pages, I was hoping for more content.For the reasons above, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

By Heather G For such an important part of us, the ego sure can be a confusing bit of work – one that often works against our own self interests. Pamela Hamilton and W.T. Hamilton’s new book, “Your Invincible Power: How to Tame Your Ego and Fuel Your Ambition” is all about getting past that point inside ourselves, reining in our ego’s and getting ahead.Starting with a breakdown of what the ego really is, they go on to describe what an egotic mind is then open up into ways to get beyond it. I know I have done many of the examples in the book, from self-sabotage to creating a comforting mental environment for myself that seeks to keep me in one place. If I am ever going to get anywhere meaningful with my life, I need to stop listening to the voice of my ego and start listening to the voice of my heart and soul.The good news is that we all have that power, we just don’t realize it. With this book, I have a new found awareness and a plan – and maybe a better tomorrow.

Hamilton's "How to Tame Your Ego and Fuel Your Ambition" is a powerful book about controlling your ego to unlock the power of your ambition. One thing I love about this book is it starts with the basics, for example, explaining what the egoic mind is and how it impacts ambition. As someone with minimal psychology background, I found this to be very helpful. Once the reader has an understanding of the ego, Hamilton moves onto how to tame the negative aspects of the mind and fuel the positive aspects to stoke the flames of ambition. This book outlines a lot of info and covers a lot of ground, but the writing is clear and concise, making it easy to digest. My favorite thing about the book is that it's practical. It's information you can implement into your life to help you reach your goals. A recommend read if you're looking to harness the power of your ambition!
