Lamont Disclosure: I purchased the paperback edition of this book after hearing about the project via the independent author community on Kboards. I also work with one of the authors, SJ Kung, who I encouraged to join the project.There are two things that really stand out about this cookbook:1. The recipes cover the gamut, from Chinese to Italian to vegetarian. It's actually a nice exposure to real home recipes from various cultures and traditions. I'd say it's especially strong in Italian recipes (lasagna, shells, risotto, etc.) as well as deserts (can't wait to try the brownie recipe). I've cooked several of the dishes myself, and they turned out great.2. The book includes writing samples from the people who submitted the recipes, who are all indie authors. Some are practical tips, but the interesting ones are the book excerpts, essays about food, and even a poem!The paperback is a large format nearly 80 pages long. There's also a measurement conversion guide at the beginning for readers who are used to metric units for cooking.Bottom line: This is a unique cookbook that has some solid recipes, doesn't cost a lot, and supports a good cause.

All the recipes sound wonderful.Now, the really great thing about this cookbook is 70% of the proceeds will go to feed hungry people. It is well worth the price.So buy this book, get great recipes and help others at the same time.

Even better, cooking with a wok is so convenient--who doesn't love one pan meals? I love Asian food and I'm always looking for simple, tasty stir fry recipes. This book delivers, and Dexter offers great food that doesn't require tons of cooking experience. I highly recommend this for those who love Asian flavors as much as I do and need a little inspiration in the kitchen.

This book is chock-full of seriously tasty recipes suited to any night of the week. If you’ve got a wok and love Asian-inspired dishes, you’ll love the wonderful variety of stir frys, fish, and veggie-rich recipes. This book is perfect for inspiring some easy dinners during the work week, especially for those busy people who don’t have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen. I can’t wait to try them all!

I don't hate it or anything, I just get SO SICK of the food. It's always the same. He occasionally catches fish that we'll have, but that's about the most exciting thing that happens. I can't believe I never thought of making campfire chili before. The recipe is perfect! And the ingredients are easily transported. There's even a macaroni and cheese recipe, and when I saw it I couldn't believe my eyes. Gordon Rock is so creative and develops such great flavors in his recipes. He's definitely my favorite author of cookbooks and I recommend any of his books due to his innovation

I can’t stand when someone goes camping and only packs potato chips and hot dogs. It’s so boring and almost defeats the purpose. I like to enjoy cooking over the campfire, but you run out of recipes pretty quickly over the years. The breakfast potatoes recipe in this book is quick, amazing, and great over the fire. The perfect amount of crisp on them. The beer pancakes are pretty good also and really convenient since, of course, I already have beer with me. If there’s ANYTHING negative to say about this book, it’s only that you’d have to pack healthier ingredients, but that’s good news for me.

I only have one problem, I spend a lot of time outside the USA so packets of soup mix are impossible to obtain. So will have to find substitutes. But it is good to have a challenge.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Overall perhaps a more sour than sweet history (see Chapter 7) but an informative, largely historical book. By lyndonbrecht This is typical of the series, brief, excellently illustrated, with solid writing and at the end, recipes, a time line and additional reading. I liked the book, but found some of the history a bit cursory. It gets better in later chapters.Chapters 1 through 3 are a history from domestication through about 1900. The first written accounts are from northern India 2,500 years ago, with the region of domestication not agreed on. The sequence includes the migration of production to the Middle East, Egypt, Cyprus and the Mediterranean islands, the Atlantic islands and so on to the Caribbean and Brazil. The history is interesting but fast-paced. The usual problem is the lack of labor and so the crop has long had an association with compelled labor and slavery. Anyone reading this the first time will note the huge demographic effect of sugar, bringing African slaves to the New World, and accounting for the intricate ethnic mix of places like Hawai'i.I found Chapter 4, a history of how sugar was used, to be the most interesting. Sugar was not only a sweetener but a medicine. There are mentions of sugar in English accounts as early as the 1200s. The most popular drink in the Middle Ages, says Smith, was Hippocras, a spiced wine than was originally made with honey but sugar replaced it. Sugar history merged with that of coffee, tea and chocolate, and is nicely covered in this chapter.Chapter 5 is on candy and sweets, and includes, briefly, the origins of some of today's major manufacturers and brands. Chapter 6 focuses on the US and is an excellent discussion of the development of sugar-loaded processed foods and soft drinks. There's some interesting discussion of doughnuts. Chapter 7, "Sugar Blues," goes into the dental and dietary problems associated with sugar consumption, not just refined cane sugar but corn sugar and artificial sweeteners. Chapter 7 is the second best chapter.The recipe section includes recipes from old texts, and is itself interesting.

You see the history of the world, and you see the creation of a commodity. And you see where sugar is today: many places where it should not be. Wonderful reading. You will want to give it to all your friends!
