In modern baseball history, only one team not named the New York Yankees has ever won three consecutive World Series. That team was the Oakland Athletics, who captured major league baseball’s crown each year from 1972 through 1974. Led by such superstars as future Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter and Rollie Fingers, in the final years before free agency and the movement of players
from one team to another forever changed the game, the Athletics were a largely homegrown aggregate of players who joined the organization when the team called Kansas City its home, developed as teammates in the minor leagues, and came of age together in Oakland. But it was the way in which they did it that immortalized those teams. For if the story of the Oakland Athletics’ championships is that of one of baseball’s greatest teams, it’s also the story of enigmatic owner Charles O. Finley and how those players succeeded in spite of Finley’s larger-than-life persona and meddlesome ways. It brought back memories of my youth as I rooted for that very special team that wore the green and gold. It's a virtual encyclopedia with the list of players and coaches, some of the names I haven't heard since those Championship years. Truly a must have for any A's fan!!

By sgalley Karin Salvalaggio has a way of making you feel like you are part of drama in this high-profile “whodunit” murder mystery. We once again follow Detective Macy Greeley as she investigates the murder of John Dalton, a soldier, recently returned home from Afghanistan. Why would someone do this? There is no obvious motive – but John’s friends and twin sister Jessie have been keeping secrets. Macy must navigate the politics of a small town in northern Montana’s ranch community, as she tries to find a killer.I found this to be a brilliant story…the kind that grabs you by the shoulders and demands to be read as quickly as possible. Ms. Salvalaggio is a superb and instinctive storyteller. The story is aggressively plot driven. It makes reading it a suspense filled pleasure. It is packed with living and breathing characters that you feel like you know. The narrative keeps the story moving until the end. Packed with tension and shocking revelations, you won’t want to put this one down! Reel When you've read the first book in a series and loved it, there is great anticipation and some worry about the second book and its continued excellence. Last year, Bone Dust White by Karin Salvalaggio was the author's debut novel, a fact that I found extraordinary due to its complex array of story and characters. The main character, Detective Macy Greeley, is eight months pregnant and unmarried when the story begins. Who starts the story of someone when she's eight months pregnant? Well, Karin Salvalaggio does and does it brilliantly. I stated at the time that Macy Greeley is a promise of layers to come. So, we come to book #2, Burnt River, and Macy, with her flaws, strengths, and struggles becomes more whole, more solid, more fantastic to the readers. Second book jitters for the reader evaporates. Like its title suggests, this book (and this series) is on fire.We catch up with Macy eighteen months after the birth of her son, Luke. She has been sent by her boss, State Police Captain Ray Davidson, to Wilmington Creek in northern Montana where a veteran of the Afghanistan wars has been murdered. Macy isn't happy to be leaving her home in Helena and her son, and her personal relationship with Davidson continues to be a tangled web of promises and let downs. However, if Maggie is confused about her personal life, she is the consummate state police detective, dedicated to uncovering the intricacies of murder. John Dalton, the recently returned Afghanistan veteran, seems an unlikely victim of a dark alley homicide, but secrets can obscure motives, and John had secrets that his sister Jessie and friends Dylan and Tyler are desperately trying keep hidden. With the area experiencing an especially harsh heat wave and wildfires flaming, Police Chief Aiden Marsh already has his hands full, but he proves invaluable to Macy in her pursuit of local knowledge and connections. By Nella I enjoyed Karin Salvalaggio’s debut Bone Dust White and was looking forward to the follow up. Burnt River doesn’t disappoint. The characters are as complex and believable as they were in the debut, but this time the story is even better. Every time I thought I had it figured out I was proved wrong. Brilliantly paced, it kept me engaged to the final page. I can’t wait to read the next one!

It is excellently illustrated--some of the photos of truffles look like pebbles in fur coats. I knew little about truffles, other than having read about truffle hunters using trained pigs, and it turns out that pigs have generally been replaced by dogs, who have better noses and don't try to eat the inventory. The first record of truffles is quite old, of desert truffles in a letter dated to about 1760 BC by the Amorite king Zimri-Lim.There's a little natural history--truffles are designed, so to speak, to be eaten so as to spread spores. They are part of the phenomenon of mycorrhiza that link fungus with trees in a vitally important symbiosis. The book looks at the Greeks, Romans and truffles in some detail, and then segues into Medieval and Renaissance use of truffles, mostly in France and northern Italy. The uses fit into the medical philosophy of humors, but eventually came to be seen as exotic and wonderful food. Savoy (later the Kingdom of Savoy) used truffles as gifts in diplomacy, including hunters and dogs.While the focus is largely European, it turns out that a form of truffle has recently been found in SW China, and is now being exported. The area is one of very high biodiversity, which a truffle boom threatens (there's a concept, a truffle boom). They are also used in criminal truffle activity, processed and passed off as much high-priced gourmet truffles. There are also American truffles, and the stories of a couple of contemporary truffle hunters (these are difficult to describe--truffle magnates? truffle businesspeople?).The book ends with an illustrated guide to truffles and then ten or so pages of truffle recipes. This is a fun and engaging read.

This is a book written to honor and preserve the memories and recipes of the early 20th century - namely the 20's, 30's, & 40's. Treasured amongst the belongings of Michael Bonnardi's parents' (Elizabeth & William) house, we came across a ledger-like book which were the writings of his maternal grandparents, Ralph and Katherine Neville. We felt we held something special while going through the handwritten pages. It was full of various recipes for homemade meals and treats, along with more than 80 diets for dogs. The recipes come from a time prior to the mass use of preservatives and artificial sweeteners. There is no high fructose corn syrup, no "polyunsaturated" / "saturated" goo, basically no artificial anything. With the trend to get back to basics and healthier meals these recipes are homemade all natural goodness. They come from a time frame of almost 100 years ago, but their value and strength still hold true today. Our first venture was to concentrate on the meals and treat recipes, with our next book to focus on the Diets for Dogs. We hope this book is an example for people to know that the findings of THEIR families past is a treasure to the future. Also, that with all the technology and advances of today, having something actually handwritten, saved and preserved to pass down to our family, your family and future generations is priceless.

Make yourself a treat and settle in to read this book By Beth, Archivist, Hamden Historical Society Michael Bonnardi has painted a picture of a family that truly illustrates the times they lived in. Last year, as Archivist of the Hamden Historical Society, Michael contacted me to research the kennel that his grandparents operated in the Mount Carmel section of Hamden from 1930-1947. Regretfully, I could not find anything in our collection to help him. With this book, Michael has filled in that gap and answered the questions about his family. Even though most of the family photos were lost in the flood of 1982, the ones that survived richly give the reader a true sense of the homestead and family business. The design and layout of the book are visually very appealing, right down to seeing the original recipe cards in his grandmother’s handwriting. From a historical perspective, this book will be a great addition to our collection. The family recipes, are, well, the icing on the Chocolate Cake.
