1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Patrick Astre's superb book "A Distant Island." By RWood Patrick is man of strong mind and an independent thinker. His book, "A Distant Island" is simply an outstanding account of modern combat and the issues surrounding participation in it. The setting of Thailand is unique, exotic and a truthful account of where and what occurred as Patrick traveled his own "Route of Odysseus." I have known him for 20+years and I was his commanding officer during the march up to Baghdad during the invasion of 2003. His narrative accurately depicts the ferocious actions that occurred during the many battles as the he and the Marines fought northward. Many veterans experience moral and personnel dilemmas in the aftermath of combat and the stress that it brings on. His book keenly reveals the pain, suffering,and internal struggle war can bring to individuals and to those they interact with particularly ones wife and family. As he accurately points out, many participate in war and experience stress. Few participate at the level that Patrick and his squadron comrades did. Flying the front lines in an attack/utility helicopter in modern warfare is not for the faint of heart. And neither is dealing with the stress generated and its aftermath. On both accounts Patrick is the real deal. I found myself saying over and over that what he described in his own life had occurred, is occurring, or had also profoundly affected mine. This true for many many veterans and families of veterans. You will find your self saying "He's describing ME." Everyone will be different in regard to issues associated with returning and to the degree they affect them but all will have to come to terms with the fact that when you return you simply are not the same person you were when you left for war and you relate to the world and to others in a different way. The truth of this transformation is critical for you and your loved ones to understand and accept, a fact that Patrick also articulates quite well. You have a choice to purchases the book in e-book or hard copy-paperback. I purchased the e-book which allows me to embed notes as I read, something I have done extensively as I read the script. The advantage in the hard back is you can easily share the book with others who would benefit from the knowledge conveyed; primarily your family and the others that love you. I have bought both books now so Patrick owes me an Old Bushmills as we sit down to compare the notes that I have taken. Loved ones will gain valuable insight into YOU and dealing with the transformed YOU as well as well as making their lives with you more productive and fulfilling. I plan on providing "A distant Island" to the key people in my life.I highly recommend this book. It helped me and offered tremendous insights. I have come to realize the I can not swim back to my past island. And to Patrick, welcome home from your journey my friend and brother in arms. Enjoy the photos Old Man.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. PTSD healing, cultural intersection, and life lesson rules to live by, all in one volume By John H Ashtre's book was an excellent read. Not only did it treat and explain PTSD to me in a different light, it helped examine and explain the effects of many events in both my wife's and my own life with a new understanding . It provided real introspection into everyone's life journey and contributed to my understanding of how the traumatic events of my life partner's and my own have molded us along our path, both good and bad. The in-depth treatment of the Thai culture was also very illuminating. Even though I have traveled throughout Thailand during at least six trips there, my understanding of the people and their customs was greatly enhanced. Alcohol use and effects were also addressed in a very real world experience. The moniker of Christian Buddhist is such a great explanation of the woman I love that this book made a great real impression on my thinking. I can see my Distant Island much clearer now, but my ship has sailed.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. and better manages his PTSD By Steven M Vaggalis A Distant Island is a compelling read because it is based on the authors life story has many twists and turns. Excelling at his career in the military the author details many dangerous conflicts where he has to suppress his emotions and rely on pure logic, experience and training to get him through. It is introspective as he details many changes in his personality as a result of war. People tell him but it takes him awhile to recognize that he is suffering from PTSD. Eventually through telling this story and reflecting on his life, he changes, and better manages his PTSD. He is a strong person to share this story with others suffering and hopefully it helps others with PTSD. I honor his service and through his story am reminded that war is hell.
