Review Praise for Neighing with Fire: "O'Sullivan's well-crafted mysteries invoke the senses with rich details of the scenery and pace of life in the popular North Carolina tourist area. Colleen's confusion about her romantic life adds an endearing facet to her otherwise tough-as-nails personality. This one will attract both readers of romance-centric cozies and those who favor Bill Crider's small-town procedurals." - (Amy Alessio, Booklist)

Hoyos An arsonist is terrorizing Currituck County, North Carolina. In Carova, a vacation paradise for tourists wishing to observe wild Mustangs, Tropical Storm Ana has swept away much dune sand. Fire Chief Colleen McCabe and Sheriff Bill Dorman discover a badly decomposed corpse that has been hidden between an old beach walkway and the new one that was recently built above it. Soon afterwards, a charred corpse is found in the smoldering remains of a new home under construction. Among the numerous suspects are competitive land developers, environmental conservationists, and tour company operators. Kathryn O'Sullivan's third entry in the Colleen McCabe series, "Neighing with Fire" [following "Murder on the Hoof" (Murder on the Hoof: A Mystery (Colleen McCabe Series)) and its debut, "Foal Play" (Foal Play: A Mystery (Colleen McCabe Series))] is the most delightful, most intriguing one yet. This novel focuses a large portion of its plot on Colleen's pets: Sparky the playful Border Collie and Smokey the laidback Siamese. Having once owned a Border Collie, I can attest to the fact that they are extremely intelligent and playful. (They also love to kill squirrels, rabbits and other rodents; at least mine did.) Also, the horses play a more significant role. There are the tour companies that search them out and the construction workers who illegally feed them. "Neighing with Fire" is loaded with conflict. There are some environmentalists who think their cause is more important than those of other environmentalists. There are competing land developers who are spying on each other, trying to obtain key properties. The obnoxious tour guides are competing with each other for business. A lot of characters are playing with fire in order to get what they want. From wearing silly disguises to murdering another human being, some will do anything. It is the mystery that also makes "Neighing with Fire" an outstanding cozy. I didn't know the killer's identity until almost the end. I kept thinking, Colleen better find out who the killer is; we're running out of pages. Romance is in the air. Colleen and Bill are growing closer. Now they are taking long walks together on the beach. Everyone jokes them about their relationship. They don't get married in this novel but one of Colleen's firefighting employees does. Chip and Fawn's wedding is one of the most unique I have ever read. I am not too fond of weddings, but I would have liked to have been invited to this one. Sunny beaches; cute, adorable pets; wild Mustangs; feuding characters; fiery explosions; and gruesome deaths make "Neighing with Fire" an excellent installment in a unique cozy series that continues to improve with age.

This book grabbed my attention from the beginning and the beautifully written narrative placed me in the middle of all the action in this evenly paced drama. The tone was very comfortable and I liked that it added to my reading pleasure with a suspense-filled mystery that kept me glued to the pages as the author intended. The author did a great job in setting up the murder mystery with suspects that seemed fitted to being the culprit but as the story moved forward, the list narrowed until there was just one. I also enjoyed watching Colleen come into her own about her growing relationship with Bill and her interactions with her co-workers. I love Myrtle who adds a bit of comedic anecdote to the telling of this tale. Boasting a great cast of characters, engaging dialogue and a feel-good atmosphere, this is my favorite book thus far and I look forward to the next book in this delightfully captivating series.

Sinn In this much-anticipated third installment, the mystery begins when a hurricane swoops into town, unearthing a carefully buried dead man from underneath a boardwalk. Turns out, it’s just some random dude with no personal connections to anyone in town. When an arsonist starts running amok, Colleen—the local fire chief—must piece together the clues before the whole town goes up in smoke. Can we just pause for a moment and reflect on how awesome it is that our leading lady is the head honcho of a firehouse? She’s not the queen of a quilting bee, or an owner of a scrapbook shop. Nope, this red-headed sleuth is out there saving lives and delegating orders to an all-male team of firefighters. You go girl! With some help from her trusty sidekicks, she pieces together the clues that all seem to lead to the town’s wealthy developer, Pinky Salvatore. In true Murder She Wrote fashion, Pinky becomes the prime suspect after he has a heated confrontation with a soon-to-be dead man. But why would Pinky—the town’s beloved benefactor—burn a man to death in one of his own properties? What motive would he have for killing a virtual stranger?Nope, I don’t buy it. Neither does Colleen, who may or may not be crushing on Pinky. You see, despite her budding romance with the town sheriff, Bill Dorman, there seems to be a spark –pun intended—between those two. As her romance fires up with Bill, she’s also feeling a pull toward the flirtatious Italian stallion. Don’t get me wrong, I think Bill is sweet and all, but I’m really rooting for the dark horse waiting in the wings. I’m hoping that in the near future, wild horses won’t keep those two from giving into their desires. Oh how I love a good pun!Read the full review on Chick Lit Café: https://loonachicklit.wordpress.com/2015/05/31/gizzys-pick-neighing-with-fire-by-kathryn-osullivan/
