Poetry. Jewish Studies. "This is a big- hearted, large-minded book, rich in its religious heritage yet wonderfully ironic, in its particulars, about those same compelling cultural connections. The flow of the writing, too, is thoroughly complete and poignantly alive in its follow-through, as if the poems were engaging the reader in real-life chat- narratives. Philip Terman's OUR PORTION is a work of profound maturity, practical wisdom, and reconciliation with what is possible."—Stanley Plumly

Review This is a big-hearted, large-minded book, rich in its religious heritage yet wonderfully ironic, in its particulars, about those same compelling cultural connections. The flow of the writing, too, is thoroughly complete and poignantly alive in its follow-through, as if the poems were engaging the reader in real-life chat-narratives. Philip Terman's Our Portion is a work of profound maturity, practical wisdom, and reconciliation with what is possible. --Stanley PlumlyIn Our Portion, Philip Terman charts the seasons of a life in the garden a life rooted in Jewish tradition and animated by love. Expansive, generous, he celebrates and sings the beauty of Creation, the lovers in one another s arms, the birds at their song. Though he is mindful of the griefs of a fallen order, he keeps returning us to what redeems and nourishes, inviting us in poem after poem to marvel with him at the spontaneous melody of the moment. --Chana Bloch

Our Portion is good poetry By The Reluctant Psychoanalyst Philip Teman's gift, the gift of the poet, is to introduce us to the particulars of his life - to tell us what a Schvitz is and how it fits into his life - in this case by describing it in detail, but sometimes he lets us figure things out from context - so that we come to know the world that he has lived in by repetition, the way that a child comes to learn language. We discover the pieces of it that he casts before us, and he lets us stitch them together, these things that I would call associations, both within and between poems, to create a tapestry of a life lived fully - and all too fleetingly. And we feel, with him, the infinite possibilities that we have not pursued. And we get to experience with him some of the moments that he has experienced, because he has worked to bring them to life for us. So that we, even if we have never been to Barkeyville, know what it is to help his wife, a master gardener, plan and plant a magical garden - one that feeds the body and soul - and names her - Ganya. And we can piece this together, or we can simply place this book by the bedside and pick it up now and then and read a poem, and be transported, for a moment, to a very different time and place - one that is both strange, and very familiar. Emotionally and spiritually I have been moved by the poet’s work. There are far too many poems to mention here, but four that I have read now numerous times include: “Oil City Serenade”, “To a Scientist Dying Young”, “Drying the Torah”, and “For Ganya”. I rarely cry while reading. However, the moment that I read the Whitman like “Oil City Serenade”, the poet’s transcendent words aided replacing the vagueness that has long lingered in me for my dead home town. “To a Scientist Dying Young” is a reminder to celebrate life, and to join in the rituals that give courage to mourn loss and hope for the future. “Drying the Torah” exhibits the respect that most feel toward matters significant and the sacred things of God. “For Ganya” parades the past by a place that is still occupied. If possible, those returning could remain at peace with the knowledge that what was important to them can still be revered and utilized. “Our Portion” is the revealing of a poet’s heart. Although each of us is unique, the poet’s shared feelings disclose the familiar resonance found in all our souls. Philip Terman, thank you for sharing the verses in your heart.

I decided to pick this up and found myself really enjoying Philip Terman's collection of both new and selected older poems. Terman's style fluctuates between tercets, couplets, and prose poems. "Our Portion" transfigures many different emotions, like waiting for spring to come and watching hummingbirds flit about, and overtly references the progenitors of nature poems, Wordsworth and Whitman. The prose poem "Walking to Jerusalem" is a fine end for the new works, mixing pedometers and airport security practices, but the collection doesn't end there--there are many more poems to go!
