In this riveting novella, attorney Paul Madriani comes to the aid of a Navy SEAL who is pursued by his own government and facing possible prosecution for disclosures he says were made by others. Unrealized Expectations By Sails-R-Up In this novel, Steve Martini has chosen to weave a mystery around a serious social issue, that being the tragic toll that is paid by far too many brave men and woman we have asked to serve our country in order to help the cause freedom. The cost to those, and their families that have written the ultimate "blank check" toward the cost of keeping America the land of the free and the home of the brave is not always death, disfigurement, or the physical disability of combat but rather the psychological wasteland of the experience. This subject is a worthy one indeed, but my opinion is a subject best covered by the author in a different cloak than "A Paul Madriani "series. The reason I purchased this book was to be entertained by the intriguing exploits of Paul Madriani and Harry Honda in and out of the courtroom so I finished the book with unrealized expectations. It leaves me disappointed and disheartened.

It wasn’t just to sell some more books in the Paul Madriani series. It wasn’t to make a quick buck. He wrote this book because he believes that PTSD is a real problem in this country. He uses The Second Man as a way to publicize what is happening to our returning serviceman and women. But he writes this, not as a sermon, but rather as an exciting thriller. He takes a couple of hours out of your life and entertains you, and leaves you thinking about the problem that we all are facing. This was a thoughtful but exciting book. I give The Second Man 4 Stars out of 5, and a Big Thumbs Up! If you are a Paul Madriani fan, you will like the different point of view in this book, but this story holds up well as a “stand-alone” book. That means that everyone should read it, because the message is important.I received this book from the publisher.

The main difference is that Steve Martini wrote this novella to highlight the issue of the impact of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on returning US military personnel. US Navy SEAL's are highly trained killers who are sworn to secrecy about their sometimes very deadly missions. Adjusting to the peaceful environment of civilian life after being a SEAL is even more difficult and stressful than for most other military personnel.Paul Madriani is asked for legal help by an ex Navy SEAL who says he is being sought by the authorities for disclosures he may have made about the most famous SEAL raid ever. While Madriani is not prepared to help the SEAL he gets dragged into a deadly game of intrigue when his girl friend joins the SEAL to find out more about a top-secret drone program. This is a short, somewhat disjointed story about a dangerous man with a dangerous medical condition. 3.5 stars.
