Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) was his best-selling book. In addition to the commercial success of his printed works, they had second lives and continuing influence when adapted as films and television productions. As of 2012, 112 films, two television episodes, and a television series, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, had been made that were based loosely on Grey's novels and short stories.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. PergamonMedia edition: PROS and CONS By Librarian NOTE: This review may be attached to other than the PergamonMedia edition for which it was specifically intended; if so, my remarks relative to the formatting of that particular set will obviously not pertain, though my comments about Zane Grey will.PROS:1. This PergamonMedia collection provides a lot of Zane Grey at a relatively low price (currently $1.99) for instant gratification in one download, and thereafter, for convenient accessability to it all in one place on your ebook reader.2. Individual Zane Grey novels are often found in the Kindle Store being sold at ridiculously high prices by unscrupulous, ebook "publishers" hoping to make a quick buck -- and even individual short stories of his are selling for the same price as this huge collection.3. This quite properly does not pass itself off as a Zane Grey WESTERN collection. Although Grey is, perhaps, most famous for writing Westerns (and the majority of these ARE Westerns), other works (such as baseball stories, ranch romances, and some true fishing tales) are also included here.4. Zane Grey is a natural storyteller; almost anything he writes is interesting to read. This set contains his earliest efforts which demonstrate an enthusiasm and freshness not yet shopworn by time and repetition.5. The text is nicely formatted, paragraphs are comfortably indicated by traditional indention (my preference) rather than by spacing, and an active TOC lists chapters as well as book titles.CONS:1. The description accompanying this book in the Kindle Store (presumably provided by the publisher) is blatantly deceptive. The content is neither complete NOR "all his significant works." Significance and quality have nothing to do with its content. Inclusion is based solely on availability; the publisher has simply rounded up everything Grey ever wrote that is currently in the U.S. public domain (mostly up to the early 1920's and, therefore, his earliest works).2. While many of these early works demonstrate a developing author's vitality, others, in varying degree, betray a degree of inexperience in his craft.3. There is an inconsistency in his Westerns. Some are rip-roarin' tales of the old West, but others are "modern" (that is to say, contemporary to the time he wrote them) ranch romances with automobiles, telephones, and moving-pictures -- and more talk than action. And those who purchase this for his Westerns may not be happy with baseball stories and nonfiction fishing accounts.4. Because this set's content is in the public domain, and all these may be obtained individually for free, some may question the need to purchase this or any other bundle of Grey's works. But those who DO wish to purchase a bundle, may prefer one that costs less than this one (which was originally $.99 before its price doubled).5. The TOC, although active, is merely ONE long, continuous list of everything (all book titles and their chapters, and all short story titles) through which one must tediously scroll to locate anything specific. It would have been better if a preliminary TOC led to each major title, each with a secondary TOC of its own leading to specific parts or chapters. This is the bundle's greatest flaw, and it detracts from the convenience for which one purchases a bundle.CONCLUSION: Zane Grey is worth reading, and I personally greatly enjoy his works, primarily his Westerns. I also somewhat enjoy his true accounts of fishing and hunting, but I am less enamored of his baseball stories. However, I also recognize that, in style and content, those stories which may seem quaint and charming to some of today's readers, may seem old-fashioned and boring to others. Of the "Big Three" (Zane Grey, Max Brand, and Louis L'Amour), I think (overall) Grey's FINEST Old West novels are a tad better (and much less introspective) than Max Brand's (though Brand's are more CONSISTENT in quality) and the equal of more than a few by Louis L'Amour (who is arguably -- in toto -- the best of the three). Obviously, personal preferences and opinions will vary among readers. Before purchasing this set from PergamonMedia, you should consider the ZANE GREY MEGAPACK from Wildside Press (for only $.99 in the Kindle Store) and the Zane Grey set from Delphi that provides a lot of extras (but costs a tad more). Other low-priced bundles are also available. (I purchased and am quite happy with the Wildside edition -- but I also own ALL of Grey's works in hardcover and/or paperback). Whichever set you eventually choose, many hours of pleasurable reading await you.
