In his debut collection of poetry, Steve Coughlin examines the severity of family trauma on both personal memory and the human psyche. Written in an accessible, colloquial voice that poet J. Allyn Rosser describes as “strong, versatile, original...[and] capable of radically different tones and angles of approach,” these poems move from haunted laments to playful musings as they negotiate the complexities of grief with the desire to escape into the imagination’s safe refuge. Ultimately, in ANOTHER CITY Coughlin depicts the harsh struggles of a working class family and leaves readers to consider what healing, if any, the imagined world can offer.

Another City, by Steve Coughlin

Review "Steve Coughlin's Another City is an auspicious debut. These poems--centering on a particular family tragedy--achieve archetypal status through their combination of unflinching observation (and self-observation--including a refreshingly honest picture of the poet as adolescent) and vast, almost irrational sympathy for an imperfect family that could just as easily have been yours or mine. At once amusing and heartbreaking, this book is so consistently lively and alive I found it impossible to put down."            --Lloyd Schwartz, author of Cairo Traffic"A few years ago I happened upon a poem called "For the El Camino." That poem did to me what Chapman's Homer did to Keats. Since then, anyone who's taken a writing class or a workshop with me . . . has heard me explain in great detail why I think it's one of the finest American odes of the past decade or so. I've been waiting impatiently for a book to go with that ode, to usher it into the world. And with appearance of Another City, Steve Coughlin's lovely, tender beauty of a book, I'm happy to say my wait is over."                           --George Bilgere, author of Imperial

About the Author Born and raised in a Boston suburb, Steve Coughlin received his M.F.A. from the University of Idaho and his Ph.D. from Ohio University. He now teaches writing and literature at Chadron State College in northwestern Nebraska.

This book weaves a family's story of struggle, heartbreak, murder, and love with individual poems that a tight, powerful burning embers of poems. These poems rise off the page with a quiet fury. This is a dynamic first book of poetry.

By Thomas Tucker If Jonathan Franzen wrote poetry, I imagine he would write poems like these. Coughlin's poems are honest testaments to the wounds every family bears, sometimes in individual members and other times within the family as a whole body. Coughlin shows us how grief binds us all, attenuating for the reader only because he brings it into sharp focus with images of the everyday lensed through his acute introspective observations of small human gestures and seemingly trivial activities with which we are all familiar. After reading this collection I think I understand Philip Larkin's 'This be the Verse' a little better now.
