Murder checks in.  When Julie Ellis traded her high stress life as an antiquities bounty hunter in the big city for the slower pace of Missouri wine country, she expected to find peace and tranquility among the beautiful rolling hills—not murder and mayhem.  As the new innkeeper of the Quilt Haus Inn, Julie breathes a sigh of relief when preparations for their first quilting murder mystery weekend are finally complete. The props are set, the scripts are ready, and each guest has a role to play. But when the lights cut out, someone goes off script, and a real dead body takes center stage.  Every guest is a suspect in the murder and as the clues unfold, it seems they all have something to hide. Can Julie identify the killer before someone else checks out … permanently? INCLUDES A FREE QUILTING PATTERN INSPIRED BY THE STORY!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. You will want to read this book!! By OpenBookSociety dot com Brought to you by OBS reviewer JeanieWhat a great idea for a theme weekend! This would definitely be on my top five list if I could have any vacation I wanted. And a place like this would be perfect. Pattern of Betrayal is the second offering in the Vineyard Quilt Mystery series. It can easily be read as a stand-alone, but you won’t want to miss Threads of Deceit if you have the opportunity to read it. Set in the wine country of Missouri, managing the Quilt Haus Inn has been a wonderful career for Julie Ellis and her best friend and chef, Hannah Marks. The Quilt Haus Inn typically caters primarily to quilters and their events, but with Julie at the center of solving the recent murder in their little town, a mystery weekend getaway for those who enjoy quilting – and mysteries – was becoming in-demand. Part of the fun included that the guests were, prior to arrival, assigned to a specific role and they could act out that part throughout the weekend, including costumes if the person so desired. In the meantime, Julie was hunting in the basement for something to donate on behalf of the Inn for an upcoming school auction, and found what appeared to be an original journal of a soldier in the Civil War. In her spare moments, Julie was trying to find someone to authenticate the journal and attach a value to it.Julie continues as a spunky, sassy former antiquities bounty hunter – turned Inn manager and the owner, thrilled to be seeing the sites she had missed all the years she managed the Inn, is equally as happy with Julie and Hannah. While some of Julie’s methods might be a little unconventional, some of the things she learned as a bounty hunter have served her well with honed instincts for investigation and thinking outside the box for creative ideas and to resolve problems. At least until the night of the mystery weekend when the murder is supposed to occur. All went well until … the order of events changed, the person who was supposed to be dead was actually alive, and one of the guests was really dead. And she had an Inn full of guests with a few staff. The murderer could only be one of the guests – but who? The victim was a recent divorcee whose children had paid for her to get away for a weekend that it sounded like she really didn’t want to attend.Hannah and Julie now are “helping” with the investigation, in spite of the deputy not welcoming their input. It’s amazing just how much Hannah is able to dig up online about people … and just how many people either aren’t what they seem, or have a completely different name and identity. I think if I were Julie, I would ask Hannah to do that investigation when someone books a room in the future, rather than wait until after the fact! The portrayals of Julie and Hannah and their friend Daniel Franklin are seamlessly consistent with the earlier book in the series, which is excellent since she did not write the first book with Mae Fox. They are excellent in both organizational and writing skills to be able to take part in a series for which one of the two writers will change with each book. The guests were very well revealed as necessary, including the details of their clothing or costume styles as part of their character definition. In this book, the guest Liam Preston, doctor of literary studies, becomes a help to Julie as she seeks information on the journal she found. Daniel is also of assistance as they tried to determine who the murderer was and why; he continues to be a sounding board and idea person for Julie.I was intrigued to see how the authors would plot the story and activities with the wrong person being actually murdered – not acting the part of being killed – and the person being a guest. This reader thinks that the mystery flew along in an orderly fashion, that every stone was turned and there were no open issues left outstanding. The plot twists were unanticipated, and I had a hard time thinking through to the right “whodunit” and “whydunit”. All in all, I was happy to have read it and hope that this series continues.I highly recommend this book to young adults and adults of all ages who enjoy quilting, bed and breakfast tales, and good inspirational mysteries. If you have enjoyed cozy mystery series that Annie’s Attic or Guideposts have published, you will want to read Pattern of Betrayal and the earlier cozy mystery, Threads of Deceit as it is part of the Annie’s fiction collections. This series is a new favorite of mine. If you like small quilting projects that are ideal for shower or other gifts, you will enjoy the pattern in the back of the book. I wish I knew more about sewing, much less quilting, so I could make one as it sounds cute and useful!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Pattern of Betrayal is a delight to read! Great characters! By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader Pattern of Betrayal by Mae Fox and Amy Lillard is a delightful cozy mystery. It is the second book in the Vineyard Quilt Mystery series. Julie Ellis is the manager of the Quilt Haus Inn. Millie Rogers, the retired owner, has developed a Murder Mystery Weekend and then left it in Julie’s hands while she travels. The inn is full (some last minute reservations) and Hannah Marks, the cook and baker as well as Julie’s friend (and former assistant), has a delicious menu planned. They have an unusual assortment of guests, but they all seem interested in the civil war journal/book that Julie found in the basement. Julie was looking for something to donate to the school auction and came across this unusual book. Eric Rutherford, book expert, whom Julie consulted about the book told her that the book was only worth a couple of hundred dollars. The local paper had written an article about the book and it was picked up by other papers.Julie has everyone get dressed for the murder mystery and dinner (and puts the book in her office). Everyone is eating while they wait for the mystery to begin with the lights going out after dessert. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned. The lights suddenly go out (not at the planned time). When they finally get the lights on, Alice (one of the guests) is dead! The police are called and Julie is really hoping to get a different detective. Luck is not in the forecast for Julie! Detective Everett Frost arrives. This is just the beginning of a very long weekend. The Detective tells the guests that they have to stay for 72 hours. The guests are now all leery of each other and start carrying weapons around the house. Julie along with Daniel Franklin (from Threads of Deceit, Book One) starts investigating to find out who wanted to kill her guest. Daniel stayed in Straussberg and has opened up the museum. Then someone steals the Civil War journal. Julie thinks that there is more to the journal than meets the eye! Julie and the staff will have their work cut out for them this weekend as they deal with the guests while trying to track down a murderer in their midst.I give Pattern of Betrayal 5 out of 5 stars. It is a charming story with interesting characters. Pattern of Betrayal is easy to read (can easily be read in a couple of hours). The mystery, though, was very easy to solve. You can almost guess who the killer is once you are introduced to all the guests. This book can be read as a stand-alone, but I would recommend reading Threads of Deceit before reading Pattern of Betrayal. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not worth the time... By Tessie Aroo I've read both books in this series and while the first one had a bit of a twist at the end, this one was very predictable. And, while the main characters are likable, they just don't have much depth. I started this series because I love mysteries and quilting, but there's not much in the way of quilting.

In a series of poems quiet but savage—in the many senses of that word—Gabriella Klein lays bare the prospects of an individual in times of ecological disaster and personal and political upheaval. These poems are gyroscopic, telescopic, microscopic. Insects and universes each are as grand and intimate as the other. The star, the forest, mud, a daughter, the Chinook wind, a honeybee, the sea—they all have as much agency and presence in this work as the poet/speaker herself.

Land Sparing, by Gabriella Klein

Review “There’s a bit of the mathematician wandering the spare landscapes of Gabriella Klein’s debut volume of poetry, Land Sparing—and of the scientist, and of the cartographer, too. It’s in the precision of the diction, and it’s in the etched density of the syntax. Even the ‘colorless light’ of oblivion—‘Earth, / you are a ghost maker’—gets nailed down.”—Ralph Angel“The poems in Land Sparing seem to issue from a remnant species of startling, heartbreaking intelligence. ‘Earth, / your love spells me. I will rake the path clean.’ Remote, at once clear and inscrutable, they signal a loneliness that is planetary in scope. As she shifts registers, Gabriella Klein echolocates us without fail in her exquisite end time.”—Joy Gladding

About the Author GABRIELLA KLEIN’S poems have appeared in Conduit, jubilat, A Handsome Journal, FIELD, and elsewhere. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center and the Santa Barbara Poetry Conference. With her family, she resides on California’s Central Coast.

Intimate, Calculating, Intensely Lyric By Rachel Girty Land Sparing is a love song—the desperate kind, the kind that tugs at the limits of language in order to limn the changing colors of longing and grief. And the object of the speaker’s love is the earth, with all its difficulties, its alternate intimacy and indifference. Klein’s speaker addresses the earth from various distances, sometimes subsumed by it, sometimes with the hesitation of an old friend. She writes through an almost unwritable space—a disaster, a cataclysm that cleaves thought and identity in two—and arrives intact, but differently intact, on the other side. The experience is illuminating and intense, a clear but shifting reflection of one human’s relationship with her planet, liquid like the reflection of faces in a lake, and Klein throws a heavy stone right in.

"To provide adequate supplies for the coming year is of absolutely vital importance to the conduct of the war, and without a very conscientious elimination of waste and very strict economy in our food consumption, we cannot hope to fulfill this primary duty.” -Woodrow Wilson

“Of our men we ask their lives; Of ourselves, a little less food.”

Food will win the war, and the nation whose food resources are best conserved will be the victor. This is the truth that our government is trying to drive home to every man, woman and child in America. We have always been happy in the fact that ours was the richest nation in the world, possessing unlimited supplies of food, fuel, energy and ability; but rich as these resources are they will not meet the present food shortage unless every family and every individual enthusiastically co-operates in the national saving campaign as outlined by the United States Food Administration.

The regulations prescribed for this saving campaign are simple and easy of application. Our government does not ask us to give up three square meals a day—nor even one. All it asks is that we substitute as far as possible corn and other cereals for wheat, reduce a little our meat consumption and save sugar and fats by careful utilization of these products.

There are few housekeepers who are not eager to help in this saving campaign, and there are few indeed who do not feel the need of conserving family resources. But just how is sometimes a difficult task.

This book is planned to solve the housekeeper's problem. It shows how to substitute cereals and other grains for wheat, how to cut down the meat bill by the use of meat extension and meat substitute dishes which supply equivalent nutrition at much less cost; it shows the use of syrup and other products that save sugar, and it explains how to utilize all kinds of fats. It contains 47 recipes for the making of war breads; 64 recipes on low-cost meat dishes and meat substitutes; 54 recipes for sugarless desserts; menus for meatless and wheat-less days, methods of purchasing—in all some two hundred ways of meeting present food conditions at minimum cost and without the sacrifice of nutrition.

Oldie but Goodie By Bay Bridge Sue Written when the US finally got involved in WW 1 (yes, the war to end all wars lol) this book makes very good use of the available and plentiful materials to make economical and "stretchy" meals to keep people's energy up and save resources to send to the boys "over there". If you are interested in historical cookbooks, this IS the book for you. I read it... and liked it... and better, USE it!

Dominic Ransleigh lost more than his arm in battle—he lost his reason for living. Returning to his family seat, he shuns all society. If only his beautiful, plainspoken tenant, Theodora Branwell, wasn't so hard to ignore…

The Rake to Reveal Her (Ransleigh Rogues Book 4), by Julia Justiss

About the Author Long before embarking on romantic adventures of her own, Julia Justiss read about them, transporting herself to such favourite venues as ancient Egypt, World War II submarine patrols, the Old South and, of course, Regency England. Soon she was keeping notebooks for jotting down story ideas. When not writing or traveling, she enjoys watching movies, reading and puttering about in the garden trying to kill off more weeds than flowers.

Suffolk—Spring 1816His ears still ringing from the impact of the fall, Dominic Fitzallen Ransleigh levered himself to a sitting position in the muddy Suffolk lane. Air hissed in and out of his gritted teeth as he waited for the red wave of pain obscuring his vision to subside. Which it did, just in time for him to see that black devil, Diablo, trot around the corner and out of sight.Headed back to the barn, probably, Dom thought. If horses could laugh, surely the bad-tempered varlet was laughing at him.It was his own fault, always choosing the most difficult and high-spirited colts to train as hunters. Horses with the speed and heart to gallop across country, jumping with ease any obstacle in their paths, but needing two strong hands on the reins to control their headstrong, temperamental natures. He looked down at his one remaining hand, still trembling from the strain of that wild ride. Flexing the wrist, he judged it sore but not broken. After years of tending himself from various injuries suffered during his service with the Sixteenth Dragoons, a gingerly bending of the arm informed him no bones were broken there, either. His left shoulder still throbbed, but at least he hadn't fallen on the stump of his right arm. Had he done that, he'd probably still be unconscious from the agony.Resigning himself to sit in the mud until his muzzy head cleared, Dom gazed down the lane after the fleeing horse. Though the doctors had warned him, he'd resisted accepting what he'd just proved: he'd not be able to control Diablo, or any of the other horses in his stable full of hunters, with a single good hand.Sighing, Dom struggled to his feet. He might as well face the inevitable. As he'd never be able to ride Diablo or the others again, there was no sense hanging on to them. The bitter taste of defeat in his mouth, he told himself he would look into selling them off at Tattersall's while the horses were still in prime form and able to fetch a good price. Sell the four-horse carriages, too, since with one hand, he couldn't handle more than a pair.Thereby severing one more link between the man he'd been before Waterloo, and now.Jilting a fiancée, leaving the army, and now this. Nothing like changing his world completely in the space of a week.Could he give it all up? he wondered as he set off down the lane. Following in his hunting-mad father's footsteps had been his goal since he'd joined his first chase, schooling hunters a talent he worked to perfect. Before the army and between Oxford terms, he'd spent all his time studying horses, looking for that perfect combination of bone, stamina and spirit that made a good hunter. Buying them, training them, then hunting and steeplechasing with the like-minded friends who called themselves 'Dom's Daredevils'.Stripped of that occupation, the future stretched before him as a frightening void.Though he'd never previously had a taste for solitude, within days of his return, he'd felt compelled to leave London. The prospect of visiting his clubs, attending a ball, mixing with the old crowd at Tatt's, inspecting the horses before a sale—all the activities in which he'd once delighted—now repelled him. Sending away even his cousin Will, who'd rescued him from the battlefield and tended him for months, he'd retreated to Bildenstone—the family estate he'd not seen in years, and hadn't even been sure was still habitable. He'd sent Elizabeth away, too. A wave of grief and remorse swept through him as her lovely face surfaced in his mind. How could he have asked her to wait for him to recover, when the man he was now no longer fit into the world of hunts and balls they'd meant to share?Ruthlessly he extinguished her image, everything about her and the hopes they once cherished too painful to contemplate. Best to concentrate on taking the next small step down the road ahead, small steps being all he could manage towards a future cloaked in a shifting mist of uncertainty.Fighting the despair threatening to suck him down, he reminded himself again why he'd left friends, fiancée, and all that was familiar. To find himself…whatever was left to find.Wearily he picked up his pace, his rattled brain still righting itself. He traversed the sharp corner around which his horse had disappeared to find himself almost face to face with a young woman leading a mare. They both started, the horsing rearing a little.'Down, Starfire,' a feminine voice commanded. Looking up at him expectantly, the girl smiled and said, 'Sir, will you give me a hand? I was almost run down by a black beast of a stallion, which startled my mare. I'm afraid I wasn't paying enough attention, and lost my seat. I'll require help to remount.'His mind still befuddled, Dom stared at her. Though tall enough that he didn't have to look down very far, his first impression was of a little brown wren—lovely pale complexion, big brown eyes, hair of indeterminate hue tucked under a tired-looking bonnet, and a worn brown habit years out of date. The unknown miss didn't flinch at his eye patch, he had to give her that. Nor did her eyes stray to the pinned-up sleeve of his missing arm—the sleeve now liberally spattered with mud and decorated with leaf-bits, as was the rest of his clothing. Heavens, he must look like a vagrant who'd slept in the woods. It was a wonder she didn't run screaming in the opposite direction. His lips curved into a whimsical smile at the thought as her pleasant expression faded. 'Sir, could you give me a hand, help me remount?' she all but shouted.Dom flinched at the loud tones. She must think me simple as well as dishevelled. As his mind finally cleared and her request registered, his amusement vanished. The images flashed into his head—all the girls he'd lifted in a dance, tossed into saddles…carried into bed. With two strong arms.Anger coursed through him. 'That would be a bit of problem.' He gestured to his empty sleeve. 'Afraid I can't help you. Good day, miss.'Her eyes widened as he began to walk past her. 'Can't help me?' she echoed. 'Can't—or won't?'Fury mounting, he wheeled back to face her. 'Don't you see, idiot girl?' he spat out. 'I'm…impaired.'Crippled would be a better description, but he couldn't get his mouth around the word. He turned to walk away again. She hurried forward, the horse trailing on the reins behind her, and blocked his path. 'What I see,' she said, her dark eyes flashing, 'is that you have one good arm, whether or not you choose to use it. Which is more than many of the soldiers who didn't survive Waterloo, including my father. He wouldn't have hesitated to give me a leg up, even with only one hand!'Before he could respond, she shortened the lead on the horse's reins and snapped, 'Very well. I shall search for a more obliging log or tree stump. Good day, sir.'Bemused, he watched the sway of her neat little bottom as she marched angrily away. With well-tended forest on either side of the lane—deadfall quickly removed to provide firewood for someone's hearth—he didn't think she was likely to find what she sought.Turning back towards Bildenstone, he set off walking, wondering who the devil she was. Not that, having spent the last ten years either with the army, at his hunting box in Leicestershire or in London, he expected to recognise any of the locals. That girl would have been only a child the last time he'd been here, seven years ago. He'd probably just insulted the daughter of some local worthy—though, given the shabby condition of her riding habit, not a man of great means. He meant to limit as much as possible any interaction with his neighbours, but in the restricted society of the country, he'd likely encounter her again. Perhaps by then, he'd be able to tender a sincere apology.Stomping down the lane without encountering any objects suitable for use as a mounting block, Theodora Branwell felt her anger grow. After a fruitless ten-minute search, she conceded that she might have to walk all the way back to Thornfield Place before she could find a way to remount her horse.Which meant she might as well abandon her purpose and try again tomorrow. Not the least of her ire and frustration she directed at herself. If she'd not been so lost in rehearsing her arguments, she would have heard the approaching hoofbeats and had her mount well in hand before the stallion burst around the corner and flew past them. After all the obstacles they'd ridden over in India and on the Peninsula, how Papa would laugh to know she'd been unseated by so simple a device! No sense bemoaning; she might as well accept that her lapse had ruined the timing for making a call on her prospective landlord today. She had Charles to check on, she thought, her heart warming as she pictured the little boy she'd brought up. Then there were the rest of the children to settle, especially the two new little ones the Colonel had just sent her from Brussels. Though the manor's small nursery and adjoining bedchamber were becoming rather crowded, making settling the matter of the school and dormitory ever more urgent, Constancia and Jemmie would find them places. But she knew the thin boy and the pale, silent girl would feel better after a few sweetmeats, a reassuring hug, and a story to make them welcome. How frightening and strange the English countryside must seem to a child, torn from the familiar if unstable life of travelling with an army across the dusty fields and valleys of Portugal and Spain. Especially after losing one's last parent. It was a daunting enough prospect for her, and she was an adult. The extra day would allow her to go over her arguments one more time. She liked Thornfield Place very much; she only had to convince Mr Ransleigh, her mostly absentee landlord who had now unaccountably taken up residence, that turning the neglected outbuilding on his property into a home and school for soldiers' orphans would cause no problem and was a noble thing to do.A guilty pang struck her. She'd really been too hard on the one-armed, one-eyed man in the lane. Though he might have been injured in an accident, he had the unmistakable bearing of a soldier. Had he suffered his wounds at Waterloo? Recovering from such severe losses would be slow; frustration over his limitations might at times make him wonder if it would not have been better, had he never made it off the battlefield. She knew it was. She'd have given anything, had Papa been found alive, whatever his condition. Or Marshall, dead these five years now.The bitter anguish of her fiance's loss scoured her again. How much different would her life be now, had he not fallen on that Spanish plain? They'd be long married, doubtless with children, her love returned and her place in society secure as his wife. But it hadn't been fair to take out her desolation on that poor soldier. Wholly preoccupied with her own purpose, she only now recalled how thin his frame was, how dishevelled his rough clothing. When had he last eaten a good meal? Finding employment must be difficult for an ex-soldier with only one arm. He'd not carried a pack, she remembered, so he must be a local resident. Country society comprised a small circle, she'd been told, much like the army. Which meant she'd probably encounter the man again. If she did, she would have to apologise. Perhaps in the interim, she might also think of some job she could hire him to perform at Thorn-field Place.Satisfied that she'd be able to atone for her rudeness, she dismissed him from her mind and trudged down the lane back towards Thornfield.* * *Nearly an hour later, Theo finally reached the stables and turned over her well-walked horse. Dismissing her irritation over an afternoon wasted, she entered through a back door, to have Franklin, her newly hired butler, inform her that a visitor awaited her.Since she had no acquaintance in the county beyond the village solicitor she'd written to help her find staff, she couldn't imagine who might be calling. Curiosity speeding her step, she'd reached the parlour threshold before it struck her that, according to the dimly remembered rules of proper behaviour her long-dead mama had tried to instil in her, she ought to have gone upstairs to change into a presentable gown before receiving visitors. But the identity of the lady awaiting her drove all such thoughts from her head. 'Aunt Amelia!' she cried in surprise and delight.'My darling Theo! I'm so glad to have you home at last!' the lady declared, encircling her in a pair of plump, scented arms.Theo's throat tightened as she returned the hug of her last remaining close relation. 'I'm so glad, too, Aunt Amelia. But what are you doing here? And how did you know I was at Thornfield Place?''I'd hoped you'd come to see me in London after you left Brussels. When you wrote you'd already consulted Richard's lawyer, found a suitable country manor, and wished to get settled there before you visited, I just couldn't wait.''I'm so glad you've come, although I fear you'll not find the establishment nearly up to your standards. I'm still hiring staff, and everything is at sixes and sevens.'Pushing away, she surveyed the lady she'd not seen in over five years. 'How handsome you look in that cherry gown! In the first crack of fashion, I'd wager—not that I would know.''You're looking very well, too, my dear—though I can't in good conscience return the compliment about the habit.' After a grimace at the offending garment, she continued. 'Now that you're finally back in England, we must attend to that! One can understand the unfashionable dress, living in all the God-forsaken places my brother dragged you, but how have you managed to keep your complexion so fresh? I thought to find you thin and brown as a nut.''I've always been disgusting healthy, or so the English memsahibs used to tell Papa.''Unlike your poor mama, God rest her soul.' Sadness flitting across her face, she said, 'I still can't believe we've lost Richard, too.'Steeling herself against the ever-present ache of loss, Theo said, 'I'm glad you've given up your blacks; the colour doesn't suit you.''You don't think it too soon? It's only nine months since.' Her voice trailed off.'Since Papa fell at Waterloo,' Theo replied, making herself say the words matter of factly.'It just doesn't seem fair,' Lady Amelia said, frowning. 'My brother surviving all those horrid battles, first in India, then on the Peninsula, only to be killed in the very last action of the war! But enough of that,' she said after a glance at Theo—who perhaps wasn't concealing her distress as well as she thought. 'Shall we have tea?''Of course. I'm devilish thirsty myself,' she said drily. 'I'll ring for Franklin.'After instructing the butler to bring tea and refreshments, Theo joined her aunt on the sofa.'How long can you stay? I'll have Reeves prepare you a room. It's a bit hectic with the children not settled yet, but I think we can make you comfortable.''Children?' her aunt repeated. 'So you still have them— Jemmie, the boy your father took in when his sergeant father died? And the little girl you wrote me about. Besides Charles, of course. How is the poor little orphan?''Doing well,' Theo said, her heart warming as she thought of him. 'A sturdy four-year-old now.''Goodness, that old already! His father's family never…''No. Lord Everly's commander, Colonel Vaughn, wrote to his father again when I returned with Charles after the birth, to inform him of the poor mother's death in childbed, but the marquess did not deign to reply.' She neglected mentioning how she'd rejoiced at learning she'd be able to keep the child. 'So, he's still with me. Indeed, I can't imagine being parted from him.''You're quite young enough to marry and have sons who truly are your own,' her aunt replied tartly. 'I suppose you had to do your Christian duty and accompany that unfortunate girl, enceinte and grieving, back to England after Everly was killed. I do wish you'd made it to London for the birth, though. How unfortunate to have his mama fall ill, stranding you at some isolated convent in the wilds of Portugal! Naturally, after her death, you felt obliged to take charge of the infant until he could be returned to his family. But with that family unwilling to accept the boy and Richard gone—are you sure you should continue caring for him? As for the others, would it not be better to put them into the custody of the parish? Under a colonel's guardianship, such an odd household might have been tolerated in the army overseas, but even with your papa present, such a ménage here in England would be considered very strange.' She sighed. 'You were ever wont to pick up the stray and injured, even as a child.''I'm sure you would have done the same, had you been there to see them, poor little creatures left on their own to beg or starve.''None the less, without Richard… It's just not fitting for a gently reared girl to have charge of…children like that.'Theo laughed. 'After growing up in India and all those years following the drum, I don't believe I qualify as "gently reared".'Her aunt gave her a fulminating look. 'You're still gently born, regardless of the unconventionality of your upbringing, and are as well, I understand, a considerable heiress. Despite your…unusual circumstances, I wouldn't despair of having you make a good match. Won't you come to me in London for the Season, let me find you a good man to take your father's place in your life?'

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I recommend this book to Regency Romance Readers, but also to anyone who likes a feel good story! By julie whiteley The Rake to Reveal Her by Julia Justiss is a 2015 Harlequin Historical publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.Once more Julia Justiss writes a historical romance with depth, feeling, and an inspiring story that will leave you feeling happy and uplifted.War is just an awful thing, no matter what era of time or what the circumstances. The survivors suffer the aftermath in a number of ways. For Theo is was the heartbreak of losing her fiance, then the death of her father. For Dom it was coming back disfigured and without one of his arms. He was unable to enjoy his horses any longer, and all the activities he had once taken pleasure in no longer held any joy for him. So, he has retired to the country to recuperate and spend a little time alone. But, a chance meeting with the unconventional Theo opens up a new world for Dom, but Theo also opens up his mind and his heart to this refreshing young lady and her work in caring for the orphans of soldiers. But, Theo has a secret, a secret so explosive it could undermine all her work, change Dom's opinion of her, and could result in the loss of a very special young man in life. Will Theo's secret be revealed? Will Dom turn his back on her? Or will he come to her rescue?I love regency period romance that steps away from the marriage mart, balls, earls, dukes and all the rules of society. In this case we have Theo, a woman who has seen much and lost much, but who has a big heart, a straightforward and plain spoken manner, who has made a choice in taking in an orphaned child as her own that very could prevent her from marrying, since most men wouldn't consider to marriage to a woman with an orphaned child in tow.The effect Theo has on Dom is incredible. She draws him out and gives him a new, loftier purpose in life. Dom also has a profound effect on Theo who is having a hard time giving her heart to someone again after her fiance's death. This is a tender romance, featuring characters with charm, humor, and fortitude. These days I can't find too many regency era novels that employ this type of depth, and as always I thank any author who will adhere to the social and moral laws that were in place in this era, while giving her characters a more progressive thought process. The story is not overly angsty, but still builds tension and is proves true romance is not just about the physical display of affection. These characters show how the real power of love can have such a positive effect on each other and how that love spreads out to others who need love and support. I really enjoyed this novel and recommend it to lovers of regency romance, but also to anyone who enjoys a wonderful feel good story. 4.5 rounded to 5

He lost an eye and an arm in the Napoleonic wars. Before he went to war, training hunters and riding horses was his entire life. Now he feels pretty sure he cannot stay on a truly spirited horse. He just got dumped by the side of the road and that was evidence he will have no life.Theo is a young woman who also was involved in the war. Her father was an officer and she traveled with him from India and into the War. Her father was killed in the war and her fiance was killed in the war and she feels absolutely alone. To overcome her sense of loss, she has gathered a group of children orphaned by the war. She intends to teach them and care for them and help them create productive lives for themselves.Dom is her landlord and when she explains what she wants to do with a barn on his property, he at first is only superficially interested. But, he feels a strong attraction to Theo. He admires her passion for her cause and her sense of humor.Slowly but surely Theo and Dom become friends. Each of them feels a strong sense of attraction for the other.Their conversations are fun and the two of them find that they have common goals. Both want to improve the lives of the people around them. There is a busy body in the neighborhood who wants Theo and her school long gone. But, Theo is capable of charming her into becoming a supporter. And then there comes a bigger threat to Theo and her school than she ever expected.Theo and Dominic are wonderful characters. She considers herself a strong enough person to go against all the expectations of society. She is so focused on her school and protection of her charges that she is unable to view anything in her way. She is smart and funny. Her secret was relatively easy to understand and it makes the reader learn to admire her even more. She convinces Dom that he can do anything he chooses with his life. She is a great motivator.Dominic is a wonderful hero. He overcomes his fears and begins to believe that there may be things which will give him a sense of accomplishment. When he starts looking at his estate and seeing things which can be improved he gains purpose. Riding may be different but he can still ride. He becomes a new person. He is kind and understanding and considerate. And he is funny. His humor is lovely. There are secondary characters who help make the story have texture and depth. Jemmy is a wonderful boy who cares for everyone around him.The plot is well developed and the characters are created to be well rounded and human. This is a very well conceived book which makes the reader turn pages to find what happens next. I enjoy Ms Justiss' work very much.I received a copy of this book from the author with the hope that I would write a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

We travel all over with Theo who has marched to the drum following her father, a Colonel , and her fiancee Marshall, a lieutenant while trying to save orphans along the way. She was most careful of the baby, Charles. Then she loses both men to the war and has to return to England. Dom has lost an arm and an eye and still hasn't got his health back. They meet not knowing who the other is. Spoiler. He agrees to lease her a building for a school. They have a spark but both are skittish for another love. Spoiler. She has a huge spoiler following her and only way out is marriage. She is afraid for her " children" and he is afraid of losing her. There are a lot of twists in this story and they all go in the right direction. I love this cover. I love this plot. These are the best people to follow. I so hope you will follow them too. They will drag you into the book too. Enjoy your read!

I have brought together a small collection of some of my favourite French dishes adapted for a low-carb diet. The recipes are organised with the main meat element for each meal first. All accompanying vegetable preparations and sauces are lncluded at the end so you can mix and match your favourite sides and sauces for each meal as you please. With French cuisine being what it is there is wine and onion involved in some of the recipes, but the byword here is LOW carb, not NO carb. A little about me – I am a French man who has never lived in France. We travelled the world as children as our father had, how should I put it? an unusual job. We lived in Vietnam, China, Africa, the United States and Columbia to name but a few places, sampling some of the most diverse foods you can imagine. Our wonderful parents taught myself and brother and sisters that we carry our heritage in our hearts, so wherever we were in the world we would always eat French food at home and we would cook it together, each one of us had a job in the kitchen and learned so much about our country, our family and ourselves in the process. I no longer travel and eventually settled in Edinburgh where I am enjoying my late middle age. And as I got older and wider I decided to give the low carb lifestyle a try and haven't looked back. I've lost weight and feel great, but could not turn my back on those family recipes, so I adapted my favourites to low carb and wrote them all down. My daughter nagged me to publish them, so here they are. I hope you like my little book. Michel

There's quite a bit of prep work that goes into a few of these recipes. For example, "Simple Casserole with a Kick" requires, four cups of bacon to be cooked and diced, potatoes to be washed, peeled and then sliced, onions to be chopped, red peppers to be chopped and eggs to be beaten...all before "dumping" into the slow cooker. The instructions for this recipe are a little confusing as well. In step 5, it says to chop the onion and add onto the bacon along with the red peppers. Then in Step 7, it says chop the red pepper and add it to the top of the casserole. So do I add the red pepper in step 5 or step 7? Also, where do I add the jalapenos? They're listed in the ingredients but not in the directions. I would guess that one of the "red peppers" should be "jalapenos" and that the recipe could still be made but it would be nice if it was written correctly. Same thing with the "Chicken and Noodle Combo," where it lists 4 carrots in the ingredients and then in the directions it just says "prepare the carrots and add to the slow cooker." Are we supposed to slice them, dice them or just peel them and leave them whole? Again this probably isn't detrimental to the recipe but it would be nice if the author had given a bit more detail. The "Pot Roast" recipe just says to "add beef broth and cook for several hours." That might be OK for an experienced cook but I have a feeling a beginning cook would need to know if "several hours" meant 4 hours or 8 hours. As far as the recipes being "healthy," I think the author and I differ there as well. Several of these recipe use a combination of the following: cheese, butter, ham, canned soup and bacon which are all high in sodium and fat. Overall, I think if you're a fan of "southern-style comfort food" then you'll really like this book.

The honey roasted glazed rhubarb (p. 106 ) stood in for a birthday cake last night as we celebrated with a harvest of the first rhubarb crop from a Cuba (N.D.) garden. This book is a wonderful, well-written background of honey, with dozens of recipes to tempt your entertainment needs from morning to night!"

By Ardis Haaland The honey muffins with rhubarb are so good I had three of them as soon as they were out of the oven. I followed Sue's directions for warming up the ones I had put in the freezer, and they were just like freshly baked muffins. I hope you have a supply of rhubarb so you, too, can enjoy these delicious muffins.

A Hit Appetizer By judy petermann I made Red Quinoa, Chickpeas, and Apples in Endive Canoes for a goodbye brunch sending off my South Korean friend who is returning to her home country. The recipe was requested. How exciting to realize this recipe is going abroad to be shared with family and friends. I could not find endive so substituted red lettuce. The green and purple frilly leaves added beauty to the presentation and crunch to the appetizer/salad.
