"You know how to please a man."Megan Richards desperately wished those words coming from her best friend's kissable lips had been said in a different context. Alas, Cameron St. John was only referring to the medium-well steak she had grilled, and not a bedroom romp. One day she would shock them both when she declared her desire, her need for the man she'd known since kindergarten, when he'd pulled her pigtails and she'd retaliated by taking her safety scissors to his mullet. A mutual respect was instantly born, and they'd been friends since—sans pigtails and mullet."I figured you'd been eating enough take-out junk and needed some real food," she told him, watching in admiration as he picked up their dinner plates and started loading her dishwasher.Oh, yeah. His mama had raised him right, and Megan didn't think there was a sexier sight than a domestic man…especially one with muscles that flexed so beautifully with each movement.Since his back was turned, she soaked up the view. The man came by his rippled beauty honestly, with hours dedicated to rigorous workouts. She worked out, too—just last night she'd exercised with a box of cookies—which would be the main reason his body was so perfectly toned while hers was so perfectly dimpled and shapely.Cameron closed the dishwasher door and gave the countertop a swift swipe with the cloth before turning to face her. With his hands resting on either side of his narrow hips, he might have looked all laid-back and casual, but the man positively reeked of alpha sexiness. His impressive height and broad shoulders never failed to send a sucker punch straight to her active hormones.Too bad he was married to his job as chief of police in Stonerock, Tennessee. Besides, she was too afraid to lose him as a friend to really open up and let years of emotions come pouring out. Well, that and Cameron and his family had been the only true stability she'd known since her parents were killed in a car accident during a snowstorm when they'd been traveling up north to visit friends. Megan couldn't risk damaging the bond she had with Cam.Oh, and he'd made it perfectly clear on more than one occasion that he wouldn't get into a committed relationship. Not as long as he was in law enforcement, thanks to an incident involving his partner when they'd been rookies.Yup, he didn't do relationships; just like he didn't do healthy food."I don't eat junk," he defended himself.Megan tipped her head, quirking a brow."I'll have you know that Burger-rama is real food, and they know my order without me even repeating it." Cameron crossed his arms over his wide chest and offered her that lady-killer smile.Laughing, Megan came to her feet. "I rest my case."With a quick glance at his watch, Cameron pushed off the counter and sighed. "I better get going. I need to rest before heading out tonight."She had no clue what he was working on; she rarely did. He was pretty adamant about keeping his work absent from their conversations. He'd tell the occasional funny drunken-fight story, but when it came to a serious investigative case, he was pretty tight-lipped.Whatever he was working on must be major, seeing as how he'd been heading out to work at midnight several nights a week—not something a chief normally did. The new lines between his brows and the dark circles beneath his eyes spoke volumes about his new schedule."You're working yourself to death. You know that, right? Between all the crazy hours and the junk food. You can't be getting enough sleep."One corner of his mouth tipped up in a smile. That cocky, charming grin always had the same heartgripping impact. How many women had been mesmerized by that beautiful, sexy smile?"I'll be fine," he assured her, pulling her into a friendly hug. "This case should wrap up soon, and I'll be back to somewhat normal hours, complete with sleep. The junk food remains, though."Two out of three wasn't too bad. Besides, normal for him meant ten-hour days instead of twelve or fourteen. Reminding him of his father's bypass surgery last year would do no good. The St. John men were a stubborn bunch. She should know; she'd been the family sidekick since grade school.Megan kept her mouth shut and wrapped her arms around his waist as she slowly inhaled his familiar scent. Closing her eyes, she wished for so much. She wished Cam would wake up and see how deeply she cared for him, she wished her brother would straighten his life out and she wished she knew what to do about the out-of-town job offer she'd just received.None of those things were going to happen right now, so she held on tight and enjoyed the moment of being enveloped by the man she'd loved for years. If friendship was all they were destined for, then she'd treasure what she had and not dwell on the unattainable.Cameron eased back, resting his firm hands on her shoulders. "You okay? You seem tense."Really? Because she'd pretty much melted into his embrace. The cop in him always managed to pick up every little detail around him, yet the man in him was totally oblivious to the vibes she sent out. It would be so much easier if he just magically knew how she felt and took that giant first step so she didn't have to. The passive-aggressive thing was never her style, but in this instance she really wished he'd just read her mind."I'm fine," she assured him, offering a grin. "Just a lot on my mind lately."Wasn't that an understatement? His dark brows drew together as those signature bright blue St. John eyes studied her. "What can I do to help?"Oh, if he only knew. One day."Nothing." She reached up, patted his stubbled jaw and stepped back to avoid further temptation. "Go rest so you can head out and save Stonerock from all the bad guys."The muscle in his jaw jumped. "I'm working on it.""I hope you're careful," she added, always worried she'd get a phone call from one of his brothers or his parents telling her the worst. Because Cameron would put his life on the line for anybody. He just wouldn't put his heart on the line.He laughed. "Yes, Mom, I'm careful."Swatting him on his hard pec, Megan narrowed her eyes. "I have to ask. You make me worry.""Nothing to worry about," he assured her, with a friendly kiss on her forehead. "I'm good at my job.""You're so humble, too."With a shrug, he pulled his keys from his pocket. "Eli and Nora's baby is being christened tomorrow. You're still planning on coming, right?""Are you going to make it?"Cameron nodded and headed toward the back door. He always came and went via her back door. He never knocked, just used a key when it was locked and made himself at home."I'll make it," he told her, his hand resting on the antique knob. "I may even have time to run home and nap and shower for the occasion.""How about I pick you up?" she offered. He lived in her neighborhood, and they tended to ride together when they went anywhere. They were pretty much like an old married couple, you know, just without the sex and shared living quarters."Be there at nine." His finger tapped on the doorknob. "Lock up behind me."Rolling her eyes, she gave him a mock salute as he left. The worry was definitely a two-way street. Now that she was alone with her thoughts, she had to face the unknowns that circled around in her mind. This job offer had come out of nowhere. Was it a sign that she needed to move on? She'd been in Stonerock nearly her entire life; she was still single and had nothing holding her back.Except Cameron. After scrubbing her sink and table, Megan was still no closer to making a decision. She loved being a therapist at the local counseling center; she loved her patients and truly felt as if she was making an impact in their lives. The new job would be in Memphis, nearly two hours away. The new facility would offer her a chance at helping more people, even taking charity cases, which would allow her to comfort and guide people she never could've reached otherwise. How could she say no?As she sank onto the chair at her kitchen table, she thought of her brother. He was an adult, but he'd never been able to take care of himself. The questionable decisions he made kept snowballing into more bad decisions—each one seemingly worse than the last. He always counted on her as a crutch to fall back on. What would happen to him if she left? Would he finally man up and take control of his life? See just how dependent he'd become and actually want to change?More to the point: What would happen with Cameron? Before she made the decision, she would have to seriously consider gathering up the courage to tell him the secret she kept in the pit of her soul. This job was a catalyst for pushing her in that direction. She needed to move on one way or another, though she'd rather move on with him. Either way, she'd know if years of wanting and dreaming had been for naught. She'd wanted a relationship with him since they'd graduated high school, but the timing to reveal her feelings had never been right. Between her parents' deaths, his deployment and Megan always putting her life on hold to help her brother, she just had never found an opening.Cameron was the only solid foundation in her life. What happened if she told him how much she loved him and it ruined their friendship? Could she take that risk? He'd told her he'd never consider being in a committed relationship. He'd shared the story of the night his partner had died and how he'd had to witness the widow's complete breakdown. Cam had told her he'd never put anyone through that.Still, she had to let him know how she felt. She couldn't go through life playing the what-if game forever, and he deserved to know. By not giving him a chance to make a decision, she could be missing out on the best thing that had ever happened to her.Megan folded her arms across the table and rested her head on them. She really had no choice…not if she wanted to live her life without regrets. Some risks were worth taking. She knew without a doubt if Cameron wanted to take things beyond friendship, the joy would be totally worth the bundle of nerves that had taken up residence in her stomach.Cameron had managed about a three-hour nap before the christening. He'd also showered and shaved for the occasion. His mother would be so proud. He'd just finished adjusting his navy tie when his front door opened and closed. Heels clicked on the hardwood floor, growing louder as Megan approached the hallway. He assumed the visitor was Megan, unless one of his brothers had opted to don stilettos today. He knew of Megan's love for breakneck shoes when she wasn't wearing her cowgirl boots. Didn't matter to him if she was barefoot. Cameron had fought his attraction to Megan for a few years now. At first he'd thought the temptation would go away. No such luck. Being a cop's wife, even in a small town, wasn't something he'd put on anyone he cared about. He couldn't handle knowing he'd put the worry and stress of being a cop's wife on Megan, so he pulled up every bit of his self-control to block his true feelings.Unfortunately, Cameron had never wanted to avoid his best friend as much as he did right this moment. Dread filled his stomach as he recalled the things he'd witnessed last night while monitoring the drugstore parking lot. The events that had unfolded on his watch put a whole new spin on this case…and quite possibly his relationship with Megan. No, not quite possibly. Without a doubt the new developments would shatter their perfect bond. Her brother had gotten involved with the wrong crowd—a crowd Cameron was about to take down. She deserved to be happy, deserved to live free from her brother's illegal activities, and Cameron would do anything and everything to keep Megan safe.Although he was torn about whether or not she should find out, he was obligated to his job first, which meant he had to keep every bit of this operation to himself. She would be hurt and angry when she discovered what her brother was doing, and even more so when she realized Cameron had hidden the truth from her."You wearing pants?" she called out. With a chuckle, Cameron shoved his wallet and phone into his back pocket. "Pants are a requirement?"When he stepped into the hall, he stopped short. Damn. Megan had always been beautiful, and she always presented herself as classy and polished for work, but this morning she looked even more amazing than usual. There went that twist to his heart, the one that confirmed she was the most perfect woman for him. But he couldn't let her in, wouldn't subject her to his chaotic schedule, his stress from the job. Because if he was stressed, he knew she'd want to take some on herself to relieve him of any burden. He'd signed up for this career…Megan hadn't.With her fitted red dress, a slim black belt accentuating her small waist and rounded hips and her dark hair down around her shoulders, she stole his breath—something that rarely happened with any woman. Always Megan. Everything was always centered around Megan. She was special.Which was why he shouldn't be looking at her as if she were a woman he'd met at a bar and wanted to bring home for the night. Not that he remembered what that was like. He hadn't been in a bar for personal recreation in so long, never mind bringing a woman back to his bed.Megan deserved to be treasured, to be loved and come first in any man's life. Unfortunately he could only offer two of the three.Cameron had always figured one of his brothers would scoop Megan up, and the thought had crippled him each time the image crept through his mind. Thankfully, both Eli and Drake had found the loves of their lives. Cameron was thrilled for them, but love wasn't for all the St. John boys. Cameron barely had time to catch any sleep, let alone devote to a relationship."Should I go back home and change?" she asked, raising a brow with a smirk on her face. "You're staring at me.""No, no." He adjusted his jacket, hating the confining garment and feeling somewhat naked without his shoulder holster. "You're just looking exceptionally beautiful this morning.""You mean my old paint-stained tank and tattered shorts I had on yesterday didn't make me look beautiful?" She fluttered her eyelids in a mocking manner he found ridiculously attractive. He loved that no matter what life threw at her, she always found a way to be a bit snarky. Why hadn't some guy come along and swept her off her feet? Any man would be lucky to have her. She grilled an amazing steak, she was always there for him no matter what, she joked and she even drank beer with him.If she married someone who loved her and treated her the way she deserved to be treated, Cameron might be able to get this notion that he was worthy of her out of his head. Because he sure as hell knew that was false. He wanted to see her happy with that family she'd always wanted. But she wasn't even dating anybody. Still, he couldn't tell her his feelings because there wasn't a happy ending if he chose that path. Telling Megan would only cause an awkward, uncomfortable wedge between them, and hurting her in any way would destroy him.

Therapist Megan Richards and Police Chief Cameron(Cam) St. John have been friends for practically all their lives, both develop feelings for each other unknown to each other. Not wanting to lose Cam as a friend if he doesn't reciprocate her feelings Megan doesn't say anything to him. Cam being a cop doesn't say anything because he had a partner to die in the line of duty and he saw how his partner's wife fell apart hearing the news, he doesn't want to put Megan through that if something would happen to him. Throw in Megan's brother who is involved with illegal activity that Cam can not talk about and Megan receiving a job offer in another city, makes this a good read. I recommend you read this book to see how Megan and Cam can't deny their feelings and reach their HEA. Jules Bennett is a wonderful author, a must read for me! Check her books out I am sure you will enjoy her books too. I received an ARC for an honest review.

By TandKNix I picked up my first Jules Bennett book based on a recommendation from a friend and she has quickly become one of my go to authors. I speed read through this book and cannot wait for the next book in this series!Megan and Cameron have been best friends for years. Neither of them realize that the other wants more. Both choose to ignore their own feelings because they don't want to risk their friendship. When Megan has to make some tough decisions they are forced to re-examine what they want. Are they willing to risk their friendship for the chance to have something more?I absolutely LOVED this story. The friendship to something more has always been one of my favorite story lines and Mrs. Bennett does not disappoint! Megan and Cameron were made for each other and as I read, I could feel them make the move from friends to forever. I love a book that can suck me in and keep me reading non-stop and if that's what you are looking for this is a must read!

By Judy From Best Friend to Bride is the third book in Jules Bennett’s The St. Johns of Stonerock series. I have read all three books in the series and this is by far my favorite. I couldn’t wait until Ms. Bennett wrote Megan and Cameron’s story. They are best friends who have been through everything together. When their feelings change and they decide to explore a relationship, is it too late for them? Will Megan relocate and move away from Cameron? Then, add in a mixed up brother and Ms. Bennett has a winner to the conclusion of the series. This was a phenomenal book that I couldn’t put down as I read it one sitting. It is a standalone book but I suggest reading the other two books in the series because they are just as good of a read. I’d like to disclose that I received a copy of From Best Friend to Bride in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Between her boisterous sons and a house full of Poodles, there's never a dull moment for Melanie Travis. But no matter how hectic life gets, she can always pick up the scent of a howling good mystery--and she'll stop at nothing to dig up the truth. . .It's summer in Connecticut, and Melanie's life has become an endless string of dog shows, soccer camp, and the antics of her energetic toddler. She hardly has time to pay much attention to her Aunt Peg's new protégé, Nick Walden, a self-proclaimed "dog whisperer" with an uncanny gift for decoding dog-speak. The well-heeled dog owners of Fairfield County are lapping up his alleged talents, anxious to discover exactly what their pampered pets are thinking--that is until the pooches start spilling their secrets. When Nick is discovered dead in his home, his sister Claire enlists Melanie to help track down the killer. Now, as she juggles the demands of marriage and motherhood--not to mention her six beloved Poodles--Melanie can scarcely even begin to nose through the growing list of suspects. But just when she thinks she's barking up the wrong tree, she'll find herself face to face with a purebred murderer. . .

I would have liked a couple more shows thrown in, but the interactions between people and dogs were great, except for the bad guys :(. Once again, my trip into Melanie's world was far too short. Looking forward to the next episode.

I learn about dogs, people, the dog fancy and showing (so glad I never wanted to do that) and poodles. Always a clever mystery with a little romance thrown in. I highly recommend this series. Glad to hear it will continue for a few more books. Welcome back Melanie Travis!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. One of the best Melanie Travis mysteries yet By Gayle L. Nash As a dog lover, former dog show exhibitor, and mystery lover, I was hooked on this series from the beginning. Though you don't need to read the books in order, I highly recommend it. Berenson develops her characters so vividly that they become friends. Once I discovered this series, I read through them so fast, I found myself impatiently waiting for Death of a Dog Whispered to be published! I honestly do not see how this author comes up with so many clever mysteries for amateur sleuth, Melanie Travis, to solve. In this story there are so many possible murderers, the clients of the dog whisperer, members of his family, and friends, that I dare the reader to figure out who done it! This ranks up there among the best of the series. I couldn't put it down.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I will definitely let my family taste the Vegan Desserts! Yummy. By Michael Braggard I love desserts in whatever ways it is prepared. However, this is such a great idea to prepare it in Vegan Style. To become a vegetarian is not bad, actually it can result to a more healthier and fit body. I love the way this book is written, because I can have a variety of desserts to choose from and they are all in Vegan ways of preparation. All cheese cakes, brownies, pies and cookies are delicious, mouth watering and of course they are nutritious too. This guide is such a blessing because all details are written specifically and easy to follow. I like it generally. I am keeping this book for further reference especially when I decided to prepare the desserts at home. I will definitely let my family taste them.

The pub's name was a testament to its no-nonsense atmosphere as a favorite local hangout. He might not be a drinking man, but he wasn't abstaining from the best hot wings in Peach Leaf, Texas. After turning off his vehicle, he headed toward the door.Walking into that pub was like taking a step into the past. The thick, delicious scent of frying chicken hit his nostrils, and the twang of country music from an ancient jukebox spilled out over heel-marred hardwood floors. He swore not a single thing had changed, not even the barstools, which were made from salvaged tree stumps after a field nearby had caught fire a good twenty years ago. Each of the stools was carved into something unique—from horse behinds to totem poles. He couldn't help himself. The stupid old things still made him chuckle. The only thing notably absent from the setting was a thick cloud of cigarette smoke.Ryan smiled to himself, thinking of the ruckus it must have caused with the locals when whomever had been in charge decided to do away with smoking in bars. The wall was still decorated with photographs of famous folks who had managed to stumble into Peach Leaf on their way to somewhere else. In snapshot after snapshot, famous arms were draped over and over again around the pub's heavyset owner, Maude Jenkins, and her rail-thin husband, Jimmy. The couple smiled in each and every one, including the shot of Ryan and the rest of the senior varsity football team. A few of the photos were newer—ones Ryan hadn't seen before—and the evidence that two of his favorite people were still happy after all this time made his heart dance a little two-step."Well, I'll be damned." The deep, smoky voice jolted Ryan out of his thoughts and he turned from the wall, smack into the arms of Maude. "Where in the hell have you been, boy? What's it been? Fifty, seventy-five years since you've graced us with your presence?"Ryan wrapped his arms around Maude's broad shoulders and squeezed her into a hug. Her warm scent—a strangely comforting combination of leather and flowers—brought back memories of Friday nights after football games, when a good portion of the town had come to this same dive to celebrate wins."Hi, Mrs. Jenkins. How've you been?"Maude flashed a huge, pink-lipsticked grin and held him out with her arms to give him a long once-over. "I've been fine, kid, just fine. But never mind. How the hell have you been?" She embraced him again and patted him on the back. The woman was strong as an ox. The team had always teased her that she would make an excellent linebacker, and Maude, bless her, had never once taken offense, but rather accepted the comment as it was meant coming from clueless male teenagers—a compliment. Those pats would have knocked the wind out of a smaller man, but Ryan held his own at six-foot-two."Just fine, Mrs. Jenkins. Just fine," he said, careful not to say too much.Ryan and his father had discussed the sale of the Peach Leaf Pioneer Museum for months before they'd coordinated that morning's face-to-face meeting with the owner and director. The museum—a centerpiece of Peach Leaf and a gold mine of West Texas history—would itself become a thing of the past in the near future, as Ryan's architecture firm partnered with his dad's construction company to build a cancer treatment hospital in its place. He knew and respected Mrs. Wallace's reasons for selling her land, but the town was understandably upset about the coming change.Arrangements were already being made for every artifact, along with the buildings, to be preserved. The university in Austin would take all of the smaller pieces, while the old settlement homes, dating back to the 1800s, were to be transferred to a similar museum just outside of Dallas. It bothered him a little to know that the old houses wouldn't be in their original location, but Mrs. Wallace had revealed that they were in desperate need of repair and preservation work. Her family had lovingly allowed visitors to trample through them for years, and the wear and tear had begun to take its toll. Ryan's father, for all his faults, had worked hard to find a highly recommended specialist to handle the work, and the buildings would be well cared for at their new locale. It was for the best. But the town wasn't likely to see it that way. He knew that it was only a matter of time before word got out that the museum as they'd known it would be gone, replaced by a new, very modern cancer-treatment hospital, and it wasn't going to be pretty once word hit. The locals would see the benefit of a medical facility: plenty of much-needed new jobs, advanced health care nearby and so on…but they wouldn't be pleased that the hospital would cost a piece of their heritage.Ryan stopped that train of thought; it shouldn't bother him. After all, Peach Leaf wasn't his home anymore, and after he designed the buildings, the rest was his father's problem. Ryan planned to be long gone by the time the news hit the fan.Mrs. Jenkins chatted with him for a good half hour before finally releasing him from her grip to grab his arm and drag him over to the bar. She planted him on a stool and set to work, and before long the most decadent meal he'd had in ages was spread out in front of him like a king's feast. He took a bite of a home-style fry and savored it before tucking into his chicken and munching with contentment while Maude chattered away about the locals. It was early in the evening, and his only companions were Mrs. Jenkins and a few people he didn't recognize, so if the President of the United States himself had walked in from the kitchen a moment later, it wouldn't have surprised Ryan more than who actually did.If there was one thing worse than getting laid off from a job you loved, it was having to ask for an old job back that you, well…didn't.It wasn't that working for the Jenkinses fresh out of high school was bad; it just wasn't what Katie had wanted to do for the rest of her life. Maude and Jimmy were wonderful employers who'd treated her the absolute best for the two years she'd worked for them, but even they had been glad when Katie had accepted the offer at the museum—they had known it would make her happy, and told her they were glad for her each time she dropped by for a Coke in the years since.Katie lost herself for a moment, letting reality slip away briefly as she thought about how she would care for the little one growing inside of her, alone, without her work at the Peach Leaf Pioneer Museum…work she loved so much. Each morning, as most people sat down at their desks following long commutes, read their emails and planned for days full of business meetings in over-air-conditioned conference rooms, Katie was busy donning petticoats and pinning her thick, shoulder-length hair up in late-nineteenth-century Gibson Girl fashion. She couldn't imagine ever enjoying another job as much. She loved teaching kids about her hometown's history, demonstrating how her ancestors wove clothing, constructed rope and baked bread, and showing adult visitors how to slow down, to take a step back in time and relearn the quiet pleasure of hard work and fruitful hands.Three months ago, a couple of weeks after her excited pregnancy announcement, her now-ex-fiance, Bradley, had informed her that he wasn't cut out to be a father, that he had no interest in building a family with her. Katie had been devastated…and livid. Sure, they hadn't discussed children beyond a few casual comments here and there, and yes, the pregnancy was unplanned, but she hadn't expected Bradley's reaction to be so extreme. He had never expressed a serious interest in fatherhood that she could recall, but neither had he ever specifically stated that he didn't want kids. They'd only been together for a year, and Katie always figured they would have time to discuss their hopes and dreams before planning a family. But birth control wasn't guaranteed to work and the baby was a surprise…to Katie, an incredible, lovely surprise.Bradley hadn't shared her sentiment and had even made suggestions about how she should handle things that made her skin crawl. She'd made a big mistake in believing that Bradley was a better man than he'd turned out to be…but keeping their baby was not a mistake. Her sudden singleness and the pain of giving up the two-bedroom apartment she and Bradley had shared because it just didn't feel like home without him was a lot to carry on just her own shoulders. Plus that morning's news that in a few weeks, when the museum shut down, she would no longer have a salaried job with benefits for herself and her child. Despite all of that, and all of the other emotions churning around in her heart, Katie hadn't felt afraid.Until now.She had a supportive family who would stand by her every step of the way. Her parents were as open-armed as they'd always been, and she knew they would be an amazing source of support when the baby came, but Katie didn't want to lean too heavily on them. She wanted to be able to care for her child on her own. And her close friend June had welcomed Katie into the small but lovely cottage they'd shared ever since. After Bradley had left, she'd pulled herself together and vowed to be the best mom she possibly could—plus some—to make up for the baby's absent father. For a short time, everything had been okay. But that was before the job she loved, the career she'd built over the past five years, was threatened.Just that morning, Katie's boss had informed her of the museum's sale to an unknown buyer, and its subsequent pending demise. The artifacts and a few of the antique buildings would be preserved elsewhere, but the museum itself, and all of the jobs it took to run it, would be eliminated. Evidently, the Peach Leaf Historical Society simply didn't have the budget to outbid the vast property's potential buyer, and a state-of-the-art hospital was to replace the museum.Peach Leaf was a small town with more people than work, so of course Katie could see the benefit of so many potential jobs…but what about the town's history? Its culture? What about the joy the museum brought to the community through its annual fall and Christmas festivals and its children's learning programs and senior activities? She shoved the thought aside, unwilling to let her mind linger and build anxiety and dread over something she couldn't control. She focused instead on the present.Katie's favorite time of year was close at hand—the Peach Leaf Pumpkin Festival—and she and her coworkers had a packed schedule of events planned for that weekend. She couldn't wait for the upcoming hayride and campout, couldn't wait to pile a bunch of kids into the museum's old farm trailer and drive them the three-mile loop around the pioneer settlement, where five original homes still stood, for an afternoon of horseback riding and swimming, and a night under the stars.Katie smiled to herself. She always made sure to pack supplies for s'mores. She knew the kids and the other staff would tease her because the treats weren't exactly "authentic pioneer food," but Katie didn't care. She treasured sharing the desserts with the children and seeing their eyes light up as they made sticky messes and huddled together for ghost stories around a glowing campfire. Plus, this year, it would give her an excuse to indulge in the chocolate cravings she'd been having lately.A giddy rush rippled through her, just like it had when she was a kid. She was practically counting down the seconds. But the rush was closely followed by a scratchy tightness that wrapped around her heart when she realized that this would probably be the town's last festival. There were so many things to worry about. Aside from the most pressing issue—how to support the baby she couldn't wait to meet—there were a million other problems… How would she continue to afford her rent or gas for her geriatric truck? How could she ever replace the job that had given her so much joy, so much to look forward to?The museum was Katie's past and present. She'd believed until this news that it would also be her future, as she'd planned to work her way up to director and take over from her boss one day, in time to send her kid to college. Her mom and dad had taken Katie to the Pumpkin Festival every year since they'd moved to Peach Leaf just after Katie's sixth birthday…right next door to Ryan Ford. The two had been best friends from the instant they met, despite Ryan's hesitation to hang out with a girl "covered in cooties." Like the rest of the town, the neighboring families had gathered at the festival every year, and those times were some of the best of Katie's life. It was why she'd been so thrilled when she'd gotten this job, and it was why she put every ounce of her heart into the museum.Katie braced herself against the sudden memories of weekends with the best friend she'd eventually grown to see in a different light, and eventually lost to someone else…someone who saw that light first and claimed it.She shook her head, pushing Ryan Ford from her memory.Katie sighed. It was with a leaden heart that she had stepped back into the pub that late afternoon on her way home to see if her former employers needed any help. She wasn't alone anymore; she would soon have another person to provide for. When she'd stepped into the kitchen and Jimmy—pretending not to eye the curve of her growing belly—said she could come back anytime, even if there wasn't any work to be done, she wasn't sure if she should smile or cry.She grabbed a fresh Jenkins' T-shirt to wear on her first shift. They'd agreed she would start the first of November, and Katie had just swung through the saloon doors to make her way back to her truck when her eyes landed on Ryan Ford, eating chicken wings at the bar as if it were the most normal thing in the world. An icy tickle ran up Katie's spine and she stopped midstep."Ryan?" she called across to the bar, her voice shaky and thin. Maybe it wasn't really him. She'd had a long, terrible day, so maybe she was just imagining him sitting there like a mirage from her past, or a ghost; she couldn't be sure. Her feelings for Ryan Ford were so complicated, had wavered so much over the years that she couldn't be certain what would happen if it really did turn out to be him.She didn't have to wonder much longer, because it only took one glance at his face—that incredible face she'd hated so hard, and loved even harder—to know that it was Ryan.My Ryan, she thought, before instantly correcting herself. He's never been yours. He stared back at her, blinking as though trying to see her clearly through a veil of fog. He didn't say anything for a moment that stretched out like eternity. Then he set down his fork and spoke her name, the sound of those two simple syllables rolling over his tongue making her knees go weak until they were about as useless to stand on as pillars of sand.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. thoughts on his pregnant texas sweetheart By hello-booklover Received in exchange for a honest review.Loved Ryan. Poor guy has been through alot. He comes back into town a man with anger towards his dad and regrets for leaving his best friend Katie. He has had hardships and sadness. His failed marriage to a woman he married out of honor and responsibility who wronged him and although they are friends now what she did was not nice. He lost his best friend the night he left and she was also the woman he loved but was to afraid to tell her. His dad and him are on strenuous terms and now he is back in town to create a hospital. One that puts Katie out of a job.His luck of woe doesn’t end in the past though. He still wants Katie and even though she also wants him she fights him each step of the way. He finds out some devastating news about his mom and he is still at odds with his dad. His past sorrows are still haunting him as well.In this cute romance we see the boy asking for forgiveness and trying to regain the love of his life. We see the girl stubborn and reluctant fighting her feelings and the boy who is laying it out there. Each time they are together you feel the sparks fly. You also see Katie’s heart open a little more for him.I love his decision with the little orphan girl. That right there turned me into a Ryan supporter. The book is fun and upbeat throughout. even with some of the sadness in the book it still has a upbeat flare. Ryan fights for his chance and wears Katie down.In the end it isn’t until ryan faces his demons and tries to patch up his relationship with his dad that he feels truly free to be with Katie and Katie is now seeing the man Ryan is. The intimate scenes are few and hot but show their connection to each other as well. this is the sweet story of two people meant to be together, who got separated and went through hardships only to find one another once again. It is their journey back together and what a sweet journey it was for us to read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I was glad I received it By Rosa Cline I got this as a GoodReads First Read giveaway book; I was glad I received it. I contacted the author after finding out it's the third in the series for the Peach Leaf, Texas series. But she contacted me back (within just a few hours I might add) and told me that it is a 'stand alone' book and I wouldn't be 'lost' by reading it without having read the others in the story. This was a very good book and was pretty much 'hooked' from the first chapter on. I wished the author had chosen a different title as people who are 'turned away' from Harlequin books or 'romance' books as "boring" or "nothing but romance" really over look some good storylines like this one. (I have a few older friends and they won't even give this type of book a second glance when they see it on a shelf.) But I think if the title had represented the storyline better more people would read it.This book is more about second chances and forgiveness and acceptance than it is anything else. Reassuring people that life is okay to live and you will find someone that is 'perfect' for you. Whether you are a young man running from 'doing what's right' and it didn't turn out 'just right'; or a young woman trying to find love only to know your true love was with another; or a foster child that is looking for that 'perfect' family after her's had abandoned her. So much more to this story than just 'the typical romance'. I will be looking for the other two books in this series and this small town has more to offer than just this what this book has to give you.And for those that are prof reading it for their preteen advanced reader; this did have a few small scenes of sexual references so I personally would not recommend it for anyone that isn't an adult due to those very few paragraphs

The two fell in love with one another, but never pursed the love they felt. Kate's heart got broken when Ryan graduated high school, and left town without saying good bye. Ryan had gotten a girl pregnant and did the right thing by marrying her. it didn't take long for the couple's marriage to fall apart when they faced heart ache. Years later Ryan came back into town. Kate had been engaged to be married. When she got pregnant the jerk told her, he never wanted to be a father, and broke up with her. I loved how the friendship picked up like no time at all had passed them by. Ryan was very attentive to Kate. He was mad that any guy could leave a girl pregnant and alone. The two never really fell out of love, so this was a book about second chances. Ryan remembers his mother saying, {Sometimes the heart knows what it wants before the head catches up.} He knows his heart has always wanted Kate, now he just has to show her how much she means to him.I loved the small town feel of this book. The little town of Peach Leaf is a town where everyone knows one another, and helps each other out. When Ryan first got back into town, he forgot just how tiny Peach Leaf was. He wanted to stop late at night and grab a bite to eat with Kate. She laughed at him, because the town's restaurants were already closed for the night. instead she invited him back to her house, and shared a homemade pie. It seems like everyone in small towns knows how to cook, and bake...I felt the last few chapters of the book was rushed. Kate collapsed, and was taking to the hospital. She was 19 weeks pregnant. Kate had early-onset preeclampsia. After she was released from the hospital, the book didn't go into detail about the pregnancy, or labor. The remaining chapters were about Ryan repairing his relationship with his parents, and Kate. The book finished with a nice Epilogue with the baby in a car seat, and the family they became. It would have been nice to see how she managed her preeclampsia, and to know if she went to term. I'm also a big sucker for rushing to the hospital when labor starts. It was a nice book, but I felt it could have been more detailed, and longer.

Review THE UNWORN NECKLACE has the weight and emotional force of a novel. A novel specifically about a woman's midlife relationships as her marriage goes south, her father dies, her daughter takes flight, and a new relationship is tested. --Ron Silliman, Award Judge, Poetry Society of AmericaRemarkably depicted and balanced, THE UNWORN NECKLACE unravels and extends like a poignant novel. A prescription for healing, its poems seem as if they were chiseled, exhibiting just the right words. This is the book to tell others about right now. --Lenard D. Moore, President, Haiku Society of AmericaBook Award Prize Winner --Haiku Society of America

About the Author Roberta Beary lives near Washington, DC with her husband Frank Stella. Her website is robertabeary.com.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. gems from Roberta By D. A Giacalone A long-time fan of Roberta Beary's haiku and senryu, I just wrote a lengthy review of this book at my weblog, f/k/a, which has an audience of lawyers and haiku poets. Most lovers of fine haiku don't know or care that Roberta has a law degree and is a real estate finance attorney. For them, she's not "the best lawyer haiku poet;" she's quite simply one of the best haiku poets alive -- and she has proven it in haiku journals, contests and anthologies, year in and year out, for over a decade. But, we've been waiting for a full-length volume of her work. Therefore, The Unworn Necklace is a long-awaited, much-anticipated haikai milestone.I'm not into "poetic" language. I especially like the focus of haiku and senryu on the concrete, the small things that are part of everyday life. Roberta excels at that focus, while courageously revealing moments (as well as cycles and seasons) of pain, understanding that darkness and hurt (from divorcing to watching your parents become frail) are not only natural parts of life, but can be as life-affirming as the joys and beauty she also finds and shares.Filled with poems that will surely be hailed as "classics", this collection will leave haiku lovers wanting a sequel. And, if given the chance, it will create haiku lovers out of a lot of people who swear, like me, that they really don't like poetry.

A Haiku Journey From Divorce to New Love By Dave Russo The Unworn Necklace is a highly enjoyable collection of haiku and senryu by one of the best practitioners of these genres in English. Readers of poetry other than haiku might find it easier to respond to the more personal poems, such as:no longer marriedonly their shadows touch. . . graduation day*mother's visitside by side we outlineour lipsBut the same quiet insight and humor also underlies the nature poems:turning awayfrom the pear tree . . .turning backThe Unworn Necklace is a handsome book as well. John Barlow and Snapshot Press are doing their part to bring haiku in English into the mainstream of literature in the West.

Her haiku has the power to reach into the corners of the heart.harvest moonthe long pullof faraway childrenMake poetry of everyday matters, spring morningthe vacuum's cord snaps backinto itselfAnd, evoke long buried memories or make us smile. This collection, perhaps her best, is filled with observations on life cast in beautifully chosen language creating a vivid mind-scene.
