About the Author W. R. Cheney has worked as the Sheriff in the Gaslight Club in Paris and sold Volkswagens in Afghanistan. For more than forty years he was a professional photographer and photojournalist in Europe and the U.S. During much of that period he managed to own boats and spend an inordinate amount of time using them, most notably in the Bahamas, along the Eastern Seaboard and on the Baie d’Arcachon. He, his wife, Kendra, and their English Setter Sparky currently divide their time between Swan’s Island, Maine--where he sails the engineless Marshall 22 Penelope--and Lady’s Island, South Carolina, where he cruises and races the Marshall Sanderling Shorebird.

Bill Cheney is such a man, and what he likes is cruising the waters of downeast Maine in a small and far from luxurious vessel. After reading his occasional pieces for some years in little boating magazines, I was delighted when he gathered them into a volume under the title Penelope Down East, published by Breakaway Books, who also brought us the late, lamented Robb White’s pungent reflections. Penelope is a 22-foot Marshall catboat. Cheney acquired her in 1998 when she was more than 30 years old, and one of his first decisions was to remove the diesel engine and cruise the old-fashioned way. His book presents some of the the consequent adventures—and pleasures—of engineless cruising on the downeast coast with its big tides, frequent fog, and irresistible beauty. After more than six decades of sailing he is up to the challenges, and his long experience as freelance writer and professional photographer bring many felicities to the narrative. Bill Cheney knows what he likes (and doesn’t) and shares it with gusto in this delightful book.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Go Sailing With Cheney By Peter M. Winter Cheney is a charming curmudgeon with a resolute belief in the value of tradition. "Comparing my boat with later examples," he writes, "I would say that mine is a boat, and those later examples are yachts." With a turn of phrase both trenchant and hilarious he regales the reader with tales of derring do - but this is much more than a book about navigating a famed but tricky coastline. It is also an entertaining reminder of what is truly important in life. Cheney delights in the challenge of sailing his engineless little catboat and in his independence, self-belief and ardent desire to keep things simple, he epitomizes the very best of the Maine character. His little book is a gem.

By Amazon Customer I am thankful to have had PenelopeDowneast to help melt away the long winter nights this year. Im a downeast sailor myself and reading William Cheney's new book, Penelope Downeast took me to all of my favorite places, and some places i did not know about. Cheney writes with a candor that puts the reader at the helm in the salty cockpit of that sweet engineless catboat. You can smell the sea, feel the wind and even taste the beer. Cheney graciously shares his local knowledge of the maine coast with lyrical and witty prose. A read of the finest kind for salts, old and new.
