A kata is much like a family mewl that has passed down through generations. It holds a significance that is difficult to decipher, and many dispute the meaning of every micro movement it contains. We are thrilled to present a two-volume book on this subject. If katas are learning tools that pass down knowledge of a valued art, then the authors included in this anthology can certainly facilitate the learning process for all interested in karate. Each author has excellent experience in the field, having studied directly under masters, often in Okinawa. In addition to their long years of physical participation in the school of hard knocks, their depth of scholarly research into the encompassing culture allows their writings to illuminate many aspects of kata practice that normally go unnoticed. In our quest to better understand the full significance of kata practice, we must take a serious look at why old masters formulated the routines. How can kata practice better our health and promise to hone our self-defense skills? Each chapter in this anthology deals with the principles that guide kata practice. Hopefully the reading will reveal some of the secrets to improving techniques. As with other martial traditions, some insights cannot be shared through written word. Like good teachers, may the chapters here inspire you to look deeper into kata practice.

Though this is a compilation of previously printed essays, some of which appeared in the Journal of Asian Martial Arts more than a decade ago, and there are sure to be changes and refinements of techniques, the fundamental principles are sound. It is a great resource to have all of these essays published in one collection. Though there are a variety of authors looking at kata from vastly different angles, some of the articles will be enough to give the open minded and curious karate practitioner the keys to unlocking the mystery of kata for themselves. These are hard things to convey in words and still photographs, but the presentation, done with as much attention to detail as Mr. DeMarco always lavished on his Journal, makes this collection well worth the money. Yes, there's nothing new here if you managed to save all of your old copies of the Journal, but good to have it in one collection.

It will not be By William Lander I have been a Karate practitioner since 1970, and although I have added other martial arts ,traditional katate is my roots and a part of my daily routine. I have an excelennnt library and was hoping this would be another great addition. It will not be. There was nothing new in any of the articles, and I felt all the writers and missed the point of kata. The point is to tech you to move and move properly. Kata builds muscle memory and it is here you will learn to relax and your body will come alive. The rigid approach of these writers seemed stiff and unnatural. Not at all what karate or any other martial art is supposed to b about. I found nothing particularly useful or enlightening heer.
