What do an elf, a dying turtle, a coyote, a native boy, a white bison, a suburban father of three, a dwarf, a prairie dog, a condor, a twelve year old orphaned girl and a chipmunk have in common? Experience, strength and hope… Not taking oneself too seriously in the course of living one day at a time… In the myth of Pegasus, Medusa and Poseidon were parents of Pegasus… Bellaraophon was the hero who tamed Pegasus… In this magical twist which takes flight metaphorically, PeggySioux is the “child” of addiction, but the tribe called out of nowhere to save her is larger than her struggle with death… Their soaring promise lives on wings of love. This is the journey to PeggySioux which becomes, for each of these characters in their own way, a journey to Love.

Author Richard Leebrick’s avant-garde approach to storytelling melds music and memoir to craft a personal fable, based upon mythology, with cute talking animals, poetry, songs, and a strong message of hope and recovery. The 3-disc CD set and book can be bought together or separately, but both are really necessary, for the music is integral to the story. Sound creates a complete sensory experience, along with the reader’s imagination, which gets to revel in the geography of the great American southwest, feel the sandy, rocky terrain underfoot and smell the salt air scent of the Pacific. Reading the book while listening to the musical narration gives the reader a wholly new way to participate in storytelling, which is apropos for the singular genre Leebrick has created. The CD set, which Leebrick refers to as an “audioscape,” features an array of talent. Musician Paul Safar performs his original composition, a melodic interpretation that perfectly complements Leebrick’s lyrical poetry; vocalist Nancy Wood sings on one of the tracks and actor Rebecca Nachison narrates.“Live on Wings of Love: A Journey to PeggySioux” rests upon the shoulders of Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology. In Leebrick’s version, Pegasus is renamed PeggySioux, a sea turtle trapped between giant rocks, drowning in Medusa Bay. Phon, short for the mythological Bellerophon who captured and rode Pegasus, reaches a peak in his maturity and bravely frees the trapped PeggySioux. The sea turtle sprouts wings and Phon rides it heavenward. The poetic journey winds its way through a dreamy landscape from the open prairie to the southwest and flies to Hawaii. Along the way, a condor drops feathers as omens to unwitting chipmunks, dwarves and the occasional human, pointing them in the “right direction.” Themes of asking for and accepting help, of letting go and soaring – like a phoenix rising out of the ashes to an apex of healing to help others – resound.Although the theme of recovery is woven throughout, “Live on Wings of Love: A Journey to PeggySioux” is not heavy; rather, it sails lightly above like the condor and humorously below as a human-hating prairie dog digs his way to redemption. Both playful and profound, the story shows us the journey can be sometimes rough; jagged rocks cut the bottom of the wanderer’s feet, and one’s own ego can easily get in the way of progress, but the friends found along the way are always there to assist — to lead us gently or push us jarringly — along our path toward joy.

A delicious mix of language, music, story and myth By Classical Singer This book is a delicious mix of story, myth, poetry, music, improvisation, image, sound, place and above all, insight into the journey of life and love. With a book, artwork, an audio CD with wonderfully executed storytelling and gorgeous accompanying music, Leebrick has managed to create a story that is wonderfully non-linear, intellectual yet earthy, and full of pauses, while always moving forward. I found myself often stopping to place sticky notes at passages of profound insight, or looking at the illustrations while feeling the sound of Leebrick's rich, poetic language in my ears. When I was done with language, I put on the suite section of the CD and let Paul Safar's music give my language brain a rest. The characters are all vehicles to reference things outside of themselves (from Thelonius Chipmunk to PeggySioux herself) yet all of the characters are also unique little creations that seem to express themselves as much as the referents. There were many places that the richness of the thought and the richness of expression made me stop, pause, and savor the peace that I was experiencing. Why peace? I wasn't even always sure why. I only know that the book is infused with it.

By Thomas Paul Finney Richard Leebrick has provided an allegory with a parade of living truths. The characters came alive in my mind at the pace of serenity. It is a joyful look at life filled with the prose of grace. This book is an absolute pleasure to read, and a treasure to see. It’s unique illustrations add smoothly to the rhythm of the text. Somehow it seems to calm the mind, and warm the soul. My only complaint is due to the work I didn’t get done because I couldn’t put it down.
