Exquisitely made, lyrical, yet unpretentious, Mary Ann Larkin's Gannon Street evokes the complexities of a black neighborhood and its relationship with a sole white resident, with all the poignance of a novel, but with a gifted poet's miraculous economy. We know these characters, their dreams, frustrations, acts of ordinary kindness, in all four dimensions, but above it all there's a visionary fifth dimension hovering, showing a wisdom and imagination of the highest order, making Gannon Street a place not to be missed in anyone's tour of America. Alan Feldman, author of Immortality

GANNON STREET IS FULL OF WONDERS By Charles Sullivan This book of 32 short poems should be read quickly like a novella, then savored page by page, line by line. It tells the story of Maddie, a white woman, who has come to terms with her black neighbors (and they with her) over a period of years. Through her eyes and ears and interactions, we see peach blossoms, graffiti, human skin adorned or unadorned. We hear cell phones, church bells, people talking, the ripping sound of gunfire. Flowing through many moods and feelings, we are moved above all, perhaps, by the acceptance and integration of a stranger into this obscure urban neighborhood where kindness and sharing frequently prevail. Maddie's world may not be wonderful, but it is full of wonders. Thanks to Mary Ann Larkin, who recreates it for us with the seemingly effortless ease of a true poet.
