Michael Dickel's third book of poetry collects poems he wrote during the Israel-Hamas conflict of summer, 2014. The poems evoke a resistance to the violence all around, and make acute observations of its effects on family and daily life--from the provocations before, through the disruptions of rockets falling on Jerusalem and devastating loss of human life during attacks on Gaza, past the line of failed cease fires to an uneasy truce. The closely observed incongruence of daily life while war rages comes through as the poet witnesses his young son's responses and considers the question of the future we want versus the one that is coming. Dickel's poems are intensely personal, touching our emotions and bodies, while at the same time they address important global issues.

War Surrounds Us, by Michael Dickel

From the Author In the summer of 2014, while living in Jerusalem, I witnessed the inflammatory rhetoric of both Israel and Hamas as it escalated into provocative acts all the way to outright war. For the first time since my two children, Moshe (aged 3 at the time) and Naomi (aged 1 in 2014), were born, I heard air raid sirens and went into bomb shelters. I had only once before in my life heard the sirens or sat in a shelter. Eventually, we traveled north, away from the conflict, for our annual vacation. We did not escape, however. While on that trip, we heard the literal rumble of the war in Syria. The whole summer, I wrote what I observed and felt--my horror at all of the deaths, my concerns about my children, the way their play changed. These poems reveal a narrative of what it was like for my family and me to live through the experience of war all around us, from my perspective. The wars were almost close enough to touch. Yet throughout I also observed hints of hope, places where people met and laughed and heard music together--Muslim, Christians and Jews--as people, not as sides. I continued to write about the conflict and the hope through the ceasefire that  finally held. Those poems are gathered here, in War Surrounds Us, for you to read. I hope that you find them powerful and that they move you toward peace.

From the Back Cover "Michael Dickel's new book is an explosive tour de force. FromBreaking News to all that shivers beneath the surface, it takes us on a visceral ride as the rockets are falling through screaming surfaces, tunnels, cease fires, and death tolls; rocketing all night through missiles, mortars, sensors, sirens, shadows and eclipses, shelters and hope. As night slopes through shivers of light, War Surrounds Us will rocket your world with an escalation of unprecedented gravity." --Adeena Karasick, author ofThis Poem (Talonbooks, 2012) and The Medium is the Muse: Channeling Marshall McLuhan (NeoPoiesis Press, 2014)

About the Author Michael Dickel has two previous books of poetry: The World Behind It, Chaos...(2009) and Midwest / Mid-East: March 2012 Poetry Tour (2012). I realize that it takes a lot of pain for the poet not to harbor to convenient ready-to-use justification of Israel's existence By Elena The poems about one of the most profound conflicts between people are rooted in the everyday life of the author and his family who live in Jerusalem. Michael doesn't take sides. Arabs and Jews are represented equally. Through portraying his children he poses larger questions about how we are going to deal with the Other in our lives in the future. I would say that although this is about war, the poems sound hopeful to me. I realize that it takes a lot of pain for the poet not to harbor to convenient ready-to-use justification of Israel's existence as a state and instead face the injustices and acknowledge the painful truth. It must be taking a lot of energy from the author. But once he's done this job for us, we should use it. Once we acknowledge it, we can deal with it. These poems are food for thought not only intellectually. The words connect you to your body through emotions: the last lines of each poem literally give me goosebumps.

By Jamie Dedes Jerusalem, Summer 2014: Michael Dickel and his family including Moshe (3 years) and Naomi (1 year) hear the air raid sirens, find safety in shelters, and don’t find relief during vacation travels. In a country smaller than New Jersey, there is no escaping the grumbling wars that encircle. So Michael did what writers and poets do. He bore witness. He picked up his pen and recorded thoughts, feelings, sounds, fears, colors, events and concerns in poetry. The result is his third collection of poems, a chapbook, War Surrounds Us.While some use poetry as a a clarion call to galvanize war, Michael’s poetry is a cry for peace. He watched the provocations between Israel and Hamas that resulted in war in 2014 and he illustrates the insanity. And the retaliationContinues, reptilian and cold, retaliation the perpetratorof all massacres.Though the poems change their pacing and structure, they present a cohesive logical and emotional flow, one that takes you blood and bone into the heart of Michael’s experience as a human being, a poet, a Jew, a father and husband. He touches the humanity in all of us with his record of the tension between summer outings and death tolls, life as usual and the omnipresence of war. Both thumbs up on this one. Bravo, Michael Dickel.

I like the way you introduced this device.I like the metaphor of this device applied to your work, especially as yourbook's front pages explain your work here as "peace poetry".Your beautiful poetry gives not one word of beauty or glory to war. That speaks volumes to me.Your book is marvelous, & I treasure what you have publicly shared, therein. Thank you xsYour work starkly and beautifully presents our problem, Peace's problem. You are extremely useful and resourceful, it is clear.Yet you mention no glimmer, no hint, nor suggestion - towards peace.Perhaps amongst the peace poets the artisanal tasks include glimmers, hints, solutions?
