The book is fabulous and clearly shows why Brian was named America's Best Amateur Baker By Michael Haas I also watched The American Baking Competition on CBS a few years ago and could not wait until Brian's book was released. The book is fabulous and clearly shows why Brian was named America's Best Amateur Baker. The recipes are a nice mix of sweet and savory bakes and it also offers tricks and techniques that will appeal to different levels of baking expertise. I also enjoyed the chapter introductions as well as the head stories for each recipe that shared why Brian selected the recipe as well as an insight to family and friends who have inspired him to become the baker that he is. A must buy for all bakers and cooks!

It's Not Just Desserts By Nyssa For those of us who watched the Great American Bake-Off competition on the CBS television network a couple of years ago, the name Brian Emmett is familiar to us as the winner of a hotly-contested, multi-week showplace of amateur bakers from across the country. For those who missed the show, this book will serve as an introduction to a talented amateur baker who presents an original selection of both sweet baked treats and of hearty baked items suitable for main dishes or to be paired with breakfast, lunch, or dinner entrees.There is a nice mix of recipes suitable for the beginner or intermediate bakers such as the Banana Tea Bread, Gingersnaps, Blueberry Buckle, Old-Fashioned Raisin Cookies, several classically flavored layer cakes and frostings, muffins, and Grandma Griffin's Cinnamon Rolls. There are plenty of very challenging recipes for the experienced baker such as the macarons, soufflés, Blueberry Meringue Cloud Cake, Orange-Almond Dacquoise, Napoleons with Chocolate Mousse, and Peanut-Vanilla Chiffon Roll with Peanut Praline and Gold-Dusted Peanuts. My personal favorite recipes from the book are Chicken Pot Pie, Orange Oatmeal Chews, and Apple Pie with Walnut-Cinnamon Crumble.All of the recipes are explained in a friendly, open style and are preceded with a short paragraph or two about the where the idea for the dish originated or how it is used in the author's family. The ingredient lists are clear and most of the items can be easily found in an average supermarket. The step-by-step instructions are almost as though you were sitting with the author in his kitchen.My only disappointment in the book is the lack of photographs of the more complex steps in the recipes' preparation or of the completed dishes. It would have been much clearer to see the actual steps in in slashing and folding the dough for the Stromboli, for example. After reading the section several times, I still don't have a firm enough picture of it in my mind to trust myself to get it braided and sealed properly. Many readers could have the same issues of lack of clarity in the descriptions for the laminated dough for the Croissants or piping meringue for the cloud cake and pavlovas.There is one other change that would make using the cookbook easier on the Kindle version. That change to the format would be to include links to the other related recipes mentioned in one recipe in order to jump to that other recipe location with a click. An example would be for the Apple Tarte Tatin recipe that instructs the reader to use the Classic Pie Dough recipe for the crust and states the page on which it can be found. If that reference were linked to the proper location in the ebook, a reader could simply click to be taken to the crust recipe location, then when finished with that step, use the "back" feature go back to the Tarte recipe location to continue the preparation. I hope that this feature will be included in updated versions of the Kindle format book.Recommended for the wide range of original recipes.A free copy of this ebook was provided to me by the publisher for review purposes.

Since watching the American Bake Off competition, i been eagerly awaiting this cookbook..followed Brian on Instagram throughout the year... love the recipes especially the cookies...easy to follow...despite the lack of photographs-there were few (just a pet peeve of mine..i like to see pictures of the finish product with each recipe), worth the wait... hope one day he will follow up on another cookbook showing dinners, appetizers....
