William Hjortsberg, author of the acclaimed occult thriller Falling Angel, the basis for the hit film Angel Heart, takes readers on a mind-bending ride through Mexico after the Summer of Love, when an American hippie’s life is upended by a gang of ex-cons. All Tod remembers when he wakes up next to a dead prostitute is that he had his 1st shot of heroin the night before. He and his wife, Linda, were partying with their new neighbors, a trio of parole violators who fled to Mexico after robbing a Beverly Hills jewelry store. Now the place is empty, stripped clean except for Tod’s hunting knife, which is covered in blood. Did he kill the woman, or was he left behind as the fall guy? Convinced that his junkie friends abducted Linda to keep her from talking to the police, Tod buys a gun and prepares to do whatever it takes to get his wife back before he makes a run for the border.

Review "Mañana is a quick and often amusing read, with a stunning finish." - Kirkus“While fun might not be the word normally used to describe a story with blood, smoking guns, knives, drugs, death, and heartbreak, you’re going to have to trust me on this one. A trip. William Hjortsberg does it again.” —Michael Keaton, Golden Globe Award–winning actor “A kick-ass thriller that moves through Mexico like a scalded sidewinder. As always, Hjortsberg delivers wild surprises, cool chatter, and raw, unforgettable scenes.” —Carl Hiaasen “Hjortsberg gives us a deft, deadly no-let-up narrative in edged prose, sharp as a stropped razor. This one cuts deep so brace yourself.” —William F. Nolan, coauthor of Logan’s Run “William Hjortsberg’s Mañana is a trip—one filled with suspense, blood, and laughs.” —Jeff Bridges, Academy Award–winning actor “Terrific writing. Wild characters. Dark humor. Can’t-stop reading. Brilliant . . . Bang-bang.” —Peter Fonda, cowriter and star of Easy Rider “Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, Jack Kerouac, maybe a little Pynchon—that’s the lineage leading to William Hjortsberg and Mañana, his nifty tale of murder and young love amid the dark and wilted days of flower power. If you remember the sixties, some say, it means you weren’t there. Hjortsberg was, and he does, and often it wasn’t pretty.” —David Quammen “Alternately hilarious and plain scary . . . [Hjortsberg’s] prose is finely wrought, his drama perfect.” —Peter Bowen “A lot of people have been waiting a long time for this book. . . . Mañana shows that this writer is still at the height of his powers.” —Peter Blauner, author of Slipping into Darkness and Slow Motion Riot “Terrific . . . One of a kind . . . I’ve never read anything remotely like it.” —Stephen King on Falling Angel

One night they party with three ex-cons and a prostitute.Todd tries heroin for the first time and passes out. When he comes to, he's in the arms of the now dead prostitute, her throat slit with his knife. His wife and everyone else is gone, and the place is stripped clean. What started as a lark now becomes a mystery for Todd to solve. Did he kill the woman and what happened to his wife? Todd's determination and dumb luck keep him on the trail and you reading until the mystery is solved.Hjortberg's novel gives a sordid look at the drug culture and the people that populate it. The educated young couple's drug use inevitably puts them in contact with unsavory characters who deal drugs. There is Shank the psychopath, Nick the junkie, and Doc the conman, all ex-cons who would bump Todd off for a nickle. Todd must overcome his fears to confront these hardened criminals as he travels around trying to find his wife. While I enjoyed the novel, be warned that it contains explicit language, sex, and violence; elements to expect from a realistic story about drugs in the late sixties. It explores how drug use lowers inhibitions and how the young married couple both have different narratives that guide their behavior. The story is good and I had a hard time putting the book down.

Everything Old is... or, The Man who walks it like he talks it By enubrius In the '60s & 70s, Hjortsberg was one of the writers whose voice helped define the times.People eagerly awaited his next book which, in his case, meant people were waiting quite a while as he was NOT what you might call "Stephen King" prolific.Nonetheless, "Alp" and, especially "Falling Angel" became, and remain, sort of minor classicsAs times changed, many of that eras scribes either changed their style or, more often, simply stopped writing (or, at least, stopped being published)But now a surprising thing has happened: Hjorstberg, whose latest novel this is, has become (to these eyes, at least) RELEVANTLY stylish once again! The 60s combination of psychedelic and "conversationalist" prose that made a standard spook show like "Falling Angel" a memorable experience has now been applied to the mystery chestnut of "the guy who wakes up next to the dead body and must prove his innocence" into a startlingly MODERN, up-to-the-minute thrillerAnd, just like that older classic (albeit in a different way) the ending will FLOOR you!

I am happy to report that I was not disappointed By Scott Wilcox My only experience with William Hjortsberg is his classic novel Falling Angel, so I went in to Mañana with high expectations. I am happy to report that I was not disappointed.Mañana begins with a classic pulp-noir setup: Tod wakes up next to a dead hooker with no memory of the night before. When he discovers his wife is missing along with the lowlifes they have been partying with in Mexico, he hopes she has been kidnapped but fears she is a willing accomplice. Either way he has to find out, so he gives chase.Mañana is set in the late '60's and gives a less glamorous look at the counterculture of the time than we are used to. Tod is less in to peace and love than drugs and a good time. In his life he has played around the edges of the underworld, but is now forced to really get his hands dirty if he wants to succeed.Mr. Hjortsberg brings the beautiful, sleazy, and dangerous world of Mexico to vivid life. A walk down a sunlit street can end in a knife fight, and camping under the stars by the ocean can be interrupted by a gang of thugs. The constant tension of the environment amplifies Tod's frenzied search for his wife to great effect.Mañana is a masterfully written novel that explores the price of freedom from consequence and the cost of love. It is also a fantastic crime novel. If either of these appeal to you, I urge you to read Mañana. Highly recommended, 5 stars.
