There exists a totally unknown system that codifies the very specific manner in which we think, feel and behave. It reveals the influence on us of planetary energies. The 12-Type Enneagram is completely original, and it reveals 12 planetary essence types. We all have every one of the type energies, but they exist in lesser or greater concentrations. Only one, though, is our essence type (not personality type). Unlike the 9-Type Enneagram, which concentrates on personality, the 12-Type Enneagram focuses on planetary essence types. There are 6 main types and 6 hybrid types, all of which are linked to a planet: Mercury, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Lunar. In The 12-Type Enneagram, Matthew Campling helps you identify your type via a series of questions and then provides a detailed explanation of each type. Sections include family, friends, work, sex, love and relationships, and how we can consciously develop using the system. The 12-Type Enneagram will help you: • Understand why others are different from you • Help you deal with problems • Show you what to work on to improve your life • Help resolve inner and outer conflict and more Up till now this knowledge has been lost, or limited to esoteric schools of knowledge. Now it is available to us all.

If you love the enneagram but are tired of reading the same old information, I'd recommend this book most of all. Instead of using the standard 9 types, it divides people up into 12 categories, none of which really match up with the old 9. Each category is named for a planet energy (e.g. Mars) that people associate with a particular personality (so Mars would be martial, competitive, athletic, power-hungry, etc.). Campling not only describes each type in detail, but also relates them to other areas of life like work, sex, love, children, and so on. He uses specific case examples that make the types and their interactions much clearer. I was able to get some genuine insights into myself and other people by reading this book.CONS: In the beginning portion of the book, Campling briefly explains why the 12 categories are the "real" enneagram, but I never felt very convinced. Some more explanation of why 12 is the right number, and how he knows the 12 are the planet-types, would be helpful. It would also be helpful to know more about why people started thinking there were 9 if it is was 12 all along. He gives some mathematical equations, but after reading them I felt like, "Yeah, I see how the math works, but why is that relevant?" It all seemed a little arbitrary. He insists the triangle within the enneagram represents universal energies, not personalities, and that the other shapes means personalities, but he never gives any solid evidence. How do we know there aren't 12 universal energies and a triangle of 3 personalities instead? Or why even think this math diagram has anything to do with personality at all? The 9-type enneagrammers at least try to do scientific studies showing the personalities actually do divide along certain lines. Campling may have good reasons for his views, but they aren't fleshed out enough to be persuasive. The other con has to do with Campling's insistence that the Lunar, Venus, and Mercury types are "young" and less developed than the other types. Supposedly you go through each stage progressively in one life, and always through a particular order: first Lunar, then Venus, then Mercury, then Saturn, etc. Once you get to the end (Jupiter), you circle back to the beginning and go through the sequence again. But then you also have an essence type, one that sort of captures your overall personality. Campling says someone with a Lunar essence is less developed, psychologically or spiritually, than someone with a Saturn essence (a later stage). This sort of made sense until he suggested that we probably have more than one life and go through lives in order (e.g. in your previous life you were a Mercury, now you're a Saturn). If this is the case, why on earth would all Lunars be less developed? Wouldn't some people have gone through the cycle of lives many times? Some Lunars would be on their first Earthly life and the beginning of the cycle, but other Lunars would be on their 13th Earthly life (they've already gone through the whole cycle once and are beginning their second round). I can see why the 1st-life Lunars would be undeveloped, but why assume the 13th-life or 25th-life would be? It's like saying, "All seniors are more advanced than sophomores." It makes sense, until you realize people go through the sequence more than one time. (For example, a sophomore in college is more advanced than a senior in high school.) Once there's more than one cycle through the sequence, all bets are off about who is more advanced than whom. You can't tell just by the name of the stage.Overall, though, the book was illuminating and helpful. (Can you tell I'm a Saturn type--endless questioning? But really, despite the objections I brought up, the book was good.)

What it is and how it works: and introduction By Grady Harp London author Matthew Campling is a psychotherapist (MA psych, BA Hons counseling, MBACP), having 19 years of practice behind him, and is the only qualified 12-Type Enneagram teacher in the UK. He has authored health related books, written plays, served as a journalist (GQ, Punch, Scriptwriter, Therapy Today, The Independent, Boyz), and is in demand as a facilitator and radio speaker. As for the topic of this book he as written articles Therapy Today, The Independent, Camden Gazette, and Islington Journal. For readers unfamiliar with the term ‘enneagram’ the following elucidates: ‘the 12 Type Enneagram do depicts our essence energy. We are all one or another essence energy, called Type. It is not the same as astrology - Astrology relies on knowing our birthdate details. The influences wax and wane. The Essence type revealed by the 12-Type Enneagram is CONSTANT – therefore it is a much more reliable tool for understanding. It is not the same as the better known 9 Type Enneagram - all the 9 Type depictions began by taking the existing diagram and adding knowledge. There is evidence that the 12-Type Enneagram is the original because the reason for the diagram being as such can be explained. And unlike ‘personality types’ the 12-Type depicts essence types. Learning the characteristics of our type explains why we think and do things as we do. It also greatly helps us in understanding why other people are different. After a fine introduction as to the essence of his topic Matthew explains how it helps us: ‘You will be able to overcome limitations to your type. You will know which type to access: e.g. Lunar type. Needs to be organised (Mercury type). Knows to access Mercury type and then return to Lunar type so as not to burn out. You will be able to understand your boss/manager better. Know what is important to them: Lunar type – Playfulness. Imagination. Casual approach, Venus type – Meticulous. Careful, well co-ordinated work: Mercury type – Technical prowess. Fast delivery, Saturn type – Responds well to depth work, research, Mars type – Prizes loyalty, effort, dedication, and Jupiter type – Cheerfulness, no dramas, concern for greater picture’.He adds how to match a success career with your type: Lunar type: Recommended: advertising, media, acting, More difficult: management, multi-tasks, doctor, politician: Venus type: Recommended: interior design, beauty industry, swimming instructor, More difficult: War correspondent, PA to CEO, vet; Mercury type: Recommended: computer repair, restaurant critic, teacher, Saturn type: Recommended: author, analyst, film director, More difficult: Company spokesperson. aerobics instructor, Mars type: Recommended: Manager, soldier, politician, lawyer. More difficult: Unemployed, waiter, cleaner: Jupiter type: Recommended: social worker, volunteer, doctor, chef, entertainer, More difficult: butcher, bailiff. A fascinating new subject for most of us and one that is very well presented in this excellent book. Grady Harp, December 15
