From the New York Times bestselling author of Don’t Go Home, Annie Darling—owner of the mystery bookstore, Death on Demand—prefers fictional crimes as opposed to real ones…In one tragic week, two acts of violence shake the island community of Broward’s Rock. First, a beloved doctor is found shot dead, seemingly by his own hand. Days later, a local artist is arrested after his wife is found murdered, bludgeoned by her husband’s sculpting mallet.Convinced her brother did not commit suicide, the doctor’s sister turns to Annie and her husband, Max. She has found a cryptic sketch her brother drew, linking him with the murdered woman. Did someone want them both out of the picture? Now it’s up to Annie and Max to sort through a rogues’ gallery of suspects to see if someone is trying to frame the artist. But if Annie isn’t careful, she may have her own brush with death…

Death at the Door (A Death on Demand Mysteries), by Carolyn Hart

From Booklist It’s a lovely October day on Broward’s Rock, the offshore island where Annie Darling has her bookstore, Death on Demand. Jane Corley and Irene Hubbard are playing golf, enjoying a midweek game and looking forward to a birthday party for Jane’s younger brother. Within the week, however, Jane will be dead, bludgeoned with a mallet used by her artist husband; her murder follows by a couple days the presumed suicide of Dr. Paul Martin. The mayor announces that the police chief has arrested Jane’s husband and believes the case to be wrapped up, refusing to listen to the protests of the doctor’s sister, or to believe that the two deaths are connected. But Annie and her husband, Max, do listen and puzzle over the sketch Martin had left. So Annie and Max, with help from the Intrepid Trio—Henny Brawley, Emma Clyde, and Max’s mother, Laurel Roethke—go into action to find the real killer. They enlist Marian Kenyon, the reporter for the island’s newspaper, to help ask the questions they cannot. Fans know it’s always nice to visit Broward’s Rock, especially in the off-season. --Karen Muller

I have read all the Death on Demand books, enjoyed them, but this one took about 130 pages to really get rolling. When you have to go back and forth to the beginning pages to refresh your mind about the characters, it seems like a waste of time and is rather frustrating.

An excellent, well-paced mystery, with intelligent deduction By Violetta A new mystery by Carolyn Hart is always worth looking forward to, and this one is no exception. Annie and Max Darling combine efforts at solving three murders that touch people they know, and the police chief Billy is also a fine collaborator. The familiar trio of friends, Laurel (Max’s mother), Henny, and Emma also contribute in their own ways, and their personalities are well-drawn. The plot moves along nicely with every detail in place, and Ms. Hart’s descriptive writing is colorful and beautifully written.I always enjoy the passages that feature Agatha, the black cat who lives in Annie’s mystery book store. The second cat, Dorothy L., who is white, is a little more docile, but Agatha is in fine form here with her diversionary measures and some pleasant “catitude.” My favorite of Ms. Hart’s recent mysteries is still What the Cat Saw, but every one of her books is outstanding, and this one is no exception.

Yoder Death at the Door is the twenty-fourth book in the A Death on Demand series. The morning after a party at the Wyler Art Gallery, Dr. Paul Martin is found dead from an apparent suicide by his sister Lucy. Lucy finds a cryptic message in her brothers study that alludes to the fact that Jane Corley's life is in danger. Shortly thereafter Jane's body is found by her husband Tom Edwards, she has beaten with a sculptor mallet of her husband. Tom immediately becomes a suspect in his wife death, but claims to have on the mainland when Paul Martin was killed.Annie and Max find that there are many suspects other than Tom. Jane's brother David lives on allowance from his father's estate and administered by Jane. David is living beyond his means and possibly he wants all the estate. Also on Annie's list is Kevin Hubbard, who manages the marina that Jane owns and from, Hubbard has reportedly siphoning off money.Annie and Max can once again count on Ingrid, Emma and Henry, loyal customer of Annie's bookstore, to help solve the mystery of who the killer is.I didn't enjoy this book as much as I have others. Characters were introduced , one after the other, just by their first name and with no mention of who they might be related to or how they fit into the story line. As the story progresses , more is learned, but I found myself having to flip back forth to try and get straight the many characters.
