Annie and Dan Shannon, the authors of Betty Goes Vegan, are back. In their new book, they show readers how to cook creatively and thriftily with recipes, sidebars, and tips on stocking a pantry and using ingredients creatively. Most recipes result in leftover ingredients and servings that can be reused in multiple ways, reducing waste in your kitchen while keeping your meals fresh and flavorful. Inspired by the recipes and cost-saving techniques used during the Depression and World War II and paying a vegan homage to Julia Child, The Shannons have figured out how to get the most out of what you've already invested so that you can spend less and get more. With recipes like Korean Kimchi BBQ Burgers, Vegan Yankee Pot Roast, Not-cho Everyday Chili Dogs, and Savannah Pecan Pies, MASTERING THE ART OF VEGAN COOKING offers a way to make eating vegan both affordable and delicious.

Review "Annie and Dan Shannon, the dynamic duo of vegan retro cooking, are at it again! This time they channel "wartime Betty" with recipes and tips inspired by the Great Depression and World War II, and with some Julia Child for good measure! The results are creative and delicious recipes, money-saving ideas, and a whole lot of fun."―Robin Robertson, bestselling author of Vegan Planet, Vegan on the Cheap, Vegan Without Borders, and many more"If you've ever needed serious inspiration to delve further into the delicious world of plant-based cooking, this is it. Much more than just another cookbook, the Shannons deliver a strikingly personal and immensely powerful narrative that highlights a beautiful connection both with their food and with each other.―Randy Clemens, The Sriracha Cookbook: 50 "Rooster Sauce" Recipes that Pack a Punch"This is by far the most thorough cookbook I have ever seen! The recipes are inspiring; healthier takes on old favorites with a spicy hint of history, a dollop of frugality, and a healthy dose of humility. "―Doron Petersan, Founding Owner of Sticky FIngers Sweets & Eats"Scrumptious and innovative, Mastering the Art of Vegan Cooking leaves no doubt that somewhere Julia Child is smiling with a big thumbs up for Annie and Dan Shannon's latest triumph!"―John Schlimm, Author of Five Years in Heaven and The Ultimate Beer Lovers Happy Hour"Waste not, want not. That's what my me-maw always said, and in these tough economic times, that phrase couldn't ring truer. Mastering the Art of Vegan Cooking will help me honor me-maw's sage advice since each recipe features a cost-per-serving and many recipes offer ideas for using leftover ingredients."―Bianca Phillips, author of Cookin' Crunk: Eatin' Veganin the Dirty South

By Marisa Miller Wolfson One of the biggest concerns of would-be vegans is the cost of being plant-powered. Annie and Dan Shannon have got you covered. In their new book, they blaze new trails in otherwise familiar territory, borrowing wisdom and recipe inspiration from The Great Depression in their clever, personable and vintage kitchen-savvy way. Not only do they keep most recipes under $2 per serving, but they also suggest other recipes that either incorporate the leftovers or the unused ingredients from the current recipe. For example, I made the Chickpea a la King Skillet ($1.32 per serving!), which required only one half of a red bell pepper, then I saw five other suggested recipes that would use up the other half of that red bell pepper. And the meal was super comforting and tasty, as were the banana churro waffles I made for breakfast one day when my last two bananas were about to turn. The photos in the book were beautiful as well. Well done, Shannons!

From the opening credits to the index I loved the information, the stories, the recipes and the fabulous tips. I have been a vegetarian part time vegan for over 20 years and an adventurous cook my whole life and I thought I knew who to store my food, use it and make the most out of my dollar, wrong. I learned so much from these authors, how to store different vegetables, greens, herbs, fruit and dried goods. The shopping methods, the preparations and substitutions, brilliant and so easy,There is a chapter on how to reduce your food bill while increasing your nutrition and satisfaction in your meals. Fantastic all around cookbook and kitchen guide for all stages of food preparers. I'm gifting this to my college bound friends kids, it has everything they need to know to make devious healthy foods bye bye ramen, hello life long love of good food. The recipes are diverse, simple and from the 5 I made tasty. We have big plans for the cinnamon peach skillet rolls when our peach tree is ready. My adult children and husband have bookmarked almost every recipe to try. I'll be in the kitchen for a while.

By Lee Fitzgerald This is a wonderful cookbook for people like me who are busy but really want to try cooking vegan without having to make a lot of changes in my pantry and purchase new products that aren't easy to find. The recipes in the book are much easier to put together than other books that I have seen that feature vegan cooking -although I am sure there are many. Or maybe, it is simply the way the book is written, In any event, this cookbook demystifies the art of vegan cooking for me.There is also something very special about this book. In part, I think, because the author shares some very touching parts of her life in a style that is simply good reading. And in part maybe because she invites us into her life with her husband Danny and shares enough about them that it is clear that these are two very genuine and kind young people who walk the talk and value a simple and healthy way of life - and so you know you can believe in the goodness of her recipes. There are also a number of suggestions and points on how to save money and the recipes are fabulous.I was so impressed by this cookbook that I bought a copy for my sister-in-law and she is now a fan too - so we have decided it will be fun to get together and try some of these recipes together. And I am about to send another one to a dear friend who I know will enjoy it because it is much more than a simple cookbook.
