This cookbook is packed with over 77 recipes as well as tips and tricks from one of the Big Islands most beloved food writers, Sonia R. Martinez:

"There have been a lot of discussions in social media and other Internet groups about using convenience foods to have more time left to spend with family. As far as I'm concerned, that is a cop-out!

"With the price of food steadily rising, ready-made convenience foods are also more expensive. You can feed a family of four several home-cooked (and healthier) meals for pennies per person if your money is spent wisely."

About the Author I was born on the island of Cuba and have always been drawn to tropical climes and cuisines. For the last twenty plus years I have lived on the Island of Hawai'i in a beautiful rain forest where I love to grow herbs, collect cookbooks, play with recipes, visit farms, learn and report about new sustainable growing techniques, read voraciously, and work on crossword puzzles. My passion for food and cooking led me to own kitchen/gourmet shops and cooking schools first in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and later in the Miami, Florida area. After moving to Hawai'i, my son Anthony and I owned and operated the Akaka Falls Inn, a B&B, cooking school, gift shop and deli/gourmet shop in Honomu for several years. — Sonia R. Martinez

By Richard Frisbie From Soup To Nuts, 77 recipes with a tropical twist, plus hints, tricks and cooking tips – by Sonia R. Martinez – is a very colorfully illustrated paperback that every new cook should own. Give it as a gift to the newlywed or college student setting up house-keeping for the first time. It is full of tips, shortcuts and good basic recipes that should be in every cook’s repertoire, but even experienced cooks could benefit from reading it. I know I did.The “tropical twist” referred to in the title is the result of the author being born on one tropical island (Cuba) and living on another (Hawaii) with all the wonderful fruits and vegetables, not to mention the culinary heritage of both peppering her arsenal of ingredients and techniques. But don’t worry, when the recipe calls for an exotic ingredient, the author lists an alternative for those of us not in the tropics or who are unfamiliar with the fruit or vegetable in question. Then, in the back of the book in several very useful sections, she explains what it is and how to cook it, prepare it and freeze it. In fact, besides some very ethnic recipes I want to try and a few easy versions of recipes I’ve labored over, the back of the book had the most useful information for me, but I cook for a living. What I liked most about “From Soup To Nuts” was the engaging warmth of the writing and the clarity of the recipes and advice. It reads as if a good friend who just happens to be a passionate experienced cook is walking you through the meal literally from soup to nuts, or beginning to end, including beverages. You’ll learn what to buy, how to cook it and what to do with the leftovers all by following her simple recipes. Finally, what I liked most about the book was that in the dessert chapter, after some mouth-watering photos and recipes of some great sounding dishes such as “Tres Leches Cake” and “My Favorite Flan”, the author admits that “the right kind of cheese can be just as satisfying at the end of the meal as any dessert”. With that she offers the best ratios of cheese, nuts and fruit with suggestions and descriptions of them. Then she tells you how to make balsamic vinegar syrup to serve with it. Now that’s what I call an ideal dessert! This mostly chicken, fish and vegetables cookbook, aside from a pork and beef recipe or two, would make a wonderful addition to anyone’s arsenal of kitchen reference books, even a vegetarian’s. There is so much useful information casually packed into its 132 pages that “From Soup To Nuts” bears reading even if you don’t plan to use the recipes, but, after reading through I’m confident you’ll want to cook the recipes, too!

I was thrilled when she decided to write this new cookbook and pre-ordered right away. The book is amazing, colorful, and most of all, the recipes all sound spectacular. I've already chosen what I plan to make first. I congratulate Sonia on her endeavor and look forward to trying some her family favorites and making them our family favorites. It was especially nice to learn a little more about Sonia's personal life. Mahalo, Sonia...here's to your success!Sherrie Belliveau

I love how she has incorporated the fruits and vegetables that are available here on Hawai‘i Island into her recipes and what to substitute if these tropical selections are not available to you. I can now make some of her dishes that I have sampled at various potluck events we have been at together. Mahalo Sonia!
